Anyone interested in protecting and enhancing Tobay Beach can join with fellow volunteers and Town officials at the Annual Tobay Beach Dune Stabilization Project, slated for Saturday, March 28th, at 10 a.m. This environmentally important dune grass planting project helps protect the Town’s fragile beach dunes from erosion. Recent storms, particularly Hurricane Sandy, have had a significant impact upon the dunes and this project goes a long way to shoring these sandy barriers for future generations. The planting of grass is extremely helpful in stabilizing and building dunes because it provides a natural buffer against storm surge and high winds. Ultimately, all the volunteers feel pride in knowing they have done something tangible to protect the delicate ecosystem of the beach and surrounding areas. More than a thousand volunteers showed up for the event last year and planted more than 230,000 stalks of dune grass. I hope we have even
more hands helping this year.” Throughout its long history, the Town of Oyster Bay Dune Stabilization Project has not only benefitted the environment, it has also provided an excellent opportunity for community groups and volunteers to take part in a worthwhile endeavor. Many Town residents realize the importance of this project and parents have taken the opportunity to teach their children about protecting

Capone, who has coached girls gymnastics for 39 years, said, “In all my years coaching gymnastics, this year’s team ranks up there as one of the top five teams. My biggest problem was deciding which seven girls to put in the lineup because so many of them were that good. Not only were they strong athletically, their chemistry was unbelievable. They all, hugged and supported each other and really fit well together, which is a great quality to have in a team. I look forward to having them all back next year.”

The strength of the girls varsity gymnastics team has been undeniable this year as the combined talent catapulted the team to second-place in the Nassau County Championship, and sent three standouts to compete in the New York State tournament, a feat not seen in nearly 10 years, according to coach Mike Capone. “Usually we have at least one team member qualify for the states, but it’s been
about a decade since we’ve had three qualify,” Capone said. Massapequa High School junior Allison Wick, freshman Gillian Murphy and Berner Middle School eighth-grader Heidi Baldinger each competed in the state tournament in Buffalo, February 27th and 28th. Gillian competed in all four events: floor exercise, vault, uneven bars and balance beam, and placed 10th in the state on
vault with a score of 9.35. Both Allison and Heidi competed on the floor exercise and “performed well,” according to Capone. The first state tournament for all three girls, Capone said, “It was a real eye-opener, and now that they have more experience, next year’s season looks as good as this year’s or even better.” Also contributing to the team’s success, especially at the county championship,

Robotics To Compete

Massapequa High School Robotics is making its mark nationwide and internationally as teams 9458A and 9458C, both called “Robo Chiefs,” head to the CREATE Robotics Open National Competition in Council Bluffs, Iowa, April 7th-9th and team 9458A advances to its second consecutive VEX Robotics World Championship in Louisville, Kentucky, April 15th-18th. Team 9458A earned the opportunity to compete on a global scale, against 800 teams from 26 countries, after winning the Southern New York State Championship held at East Rockaway High School in March. Both tournaments are VEX Robotics competitions and are designed to challenge middle and high school students in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) to compete in an engineering problem in the form of a game. Teams use the VEX Robotics Design System to build robots designed to score the most possible points. This is the second world competition for 9458A team members Adam Carrero, Roberto DePietro, Sarah Goklevent and Shane Murphy, all juniors, and the first for team members Corinne Marsh, a senior, and Ben Coleman and Christian Niebling, both juniors. Members of team 9458C, who will compete with team 9458A in the national competition, include seniors Shannon D’Andrea and Christina DeLuca, sophomores Dan Foy, Joe Mann, Andrew Martello, Justin Pepe and
James Pfail, and freshman Sean Mitchell. “The teams’ success is attributed to their hard work in the design, testing and redesign of the robot,” said coach Brian Vanek. “The students spend over 100 hours
working on them throughout the year, plus many hours at home researching information. The fact that they will compete against teams from around the country and the world is a testament to their dedication and teamwork, and the exceptional job they are doing this year.” In addition to becoming tournament champions at the Southern New York State Championship, Massapequa also became tournament champions at the Freeport
Student Spotlight HOW TO BE A HERO
SUBMITTED BY: LAURA WALTERS, AGE 15 • LINDENHURST HIGH SCHOOL Have you ever wondered what it would be like to be a hero? I know I have. Wouldn’t it be cool to run into a burning building to save a little baby or catch the criminal? We all know the definition of a hero: A courageous person who helps others without thinking of him or herself or the consequences that may follow. Also, everyone under the sun knows heroes are brave, selfless, caring, etc. But, have you ever thought maybe that’s just not enough? How can something so incredibly important to society have such a short definition and description? That’s because it’s wrong. A hero is an ordinary person who can and will go out of his or her way to help, care and solve people’s problems .... basically, anyone. I bet at least one, if not every teacher you had, told you to be kind to one another, and that you never know what someone else is
going through. I just never knew that person would be my best friend. She had some problems. She lives about thirty to forty-five minutes away from me. We didn’t go to the same school, nor have any mutual friends. We met through our parents. I never knew how close I could grow to someone who lived so far. We can talk for hours. Well, when talking for hours, you run out of things to say. When I asked how school was, I knew it was the worst and best thing I could ask. She admitted she constantly felt uncomfortable in school. She was jealous of all her peers’ happiness. Her parents were fighting a lot, she was bullied, and there was also the secret. This secret was one I knew for a long time and promised to keep to this day. Let’s just say it got to her. She became depressed and cut herself. I, being the friend I am, did what
I needed to do. I told. I told my mom to tell her mom to get her to a therapist. What I didn’t do is tell her secret. I never break my promises. I just told her she was getting bullied and cutting. But this, to any parent, is traumatizing. Long story short, it took three years, but I got her through it. But what does this have to do with heroes? Well, now I consider myself a hero. So does my friend. I’ll never forget the day I got the text: thanks for saving my life. Not to be selfish, but what I did took guts and time. I selflessly got my friend through, by far, the roughest time of her life. I think I am a hero. What I’m trying to say is that even the stupidest thing can keep someone from self-harm. Even the happiest of people go through depression. Please be kind to others, and be a hero by simply listening.

Robotics Competition and at the Schreiber Vikings VRC Invitational Competition, and won the Judges Award at the Adelphi VRC Qualifier and the Design Award at the Jericho Hawks VRC 2014 Skyrise Competition. To steer students to success, Massapequa School District introduces robotics as early as elementary school in the district’s academically gifted program, Magnet. In middle school, every seventhand eighth-grade student studies robotics in their technology education classes. Robotics clubs at the middle and high school levels are offered during the school year and a one-week camp for middle schoolers, coached by Vanek, is offered in the summer. The high school level also offers robotics as part of the Principles of Engineering course and the Product Design and Engineering (Robotics) course, and is introduced in the Digital Electronics course. According to Susan Thompson, chairperson of Career & Technology Education for the district, many students take the steps to join the robotics teams by taking advanced courses beginning with Design & Drawing for Production in ninth grade. The course teaches students to draw in a 3D modeling program and print design prototypes on a 3D printer, which can be used to create parts and build the robot.

That Old Familiar Feeling By: Jamie Lynn Ryan
Take a deep breath. It calms the mind. That’s what they say anyway. Hence, my newfound appreciation for the art of yoga. It forces you to breathe, to meditate, to clear your mind of all unwanted stresses. Breathe in, breathe out. And repeat. It all started when, after 20 years of dancing, I decided that I needed something else to fill my time, to bring me back to that place where I felt like I was in shape, in control and in sync with my surroundings. After long days at work on deadline,
I settled into somewhat of a routine, using the classes to de-stress and unwind. Then came the winter, that vast, endless stretch of bitter cold, spurring the urge to hibernate until the first flowers decided to bloom. Unfortunately, stress doesn’t wait until spring, and so, come March, back to yoga I went. The first few weeks were a bit rough, what with the creaking bones and stiff muscles and, well, just a general laziness and lack of motivation. But, like magic, after getting back into a bit of a routine, there it was – that old familiar feeling of inner peace. For a few minutes anyway.
The key, I suppose, it to find a way to bottle that feeling and be able to call upon it when needed, to apply it to the world beyond my yoga mat. Perhaps that comes with practice. More practice than the once-aweek, sporadic schedule I have assembled for myself. One can only assume. One day at a time. One class at a time. One deep breath at a time. That’s all any of us can focus on in our infinite quest to find that deep, soul-searching sense of meaning to it all. No stress, no judgment, no pressure. Just you, alone with your thoughts. Breathe in, breathe out. And repeat.

Advancing To State building mechanical devices or presenting their own interpretation of literary classics and compete on the local, state, and world levels. Team members Jack Graziano, Samantha Carroll, Jillian Spurrell, Kathryn Welgarz, Tatum McMillan, Dennis Faiella and Olivia Poucell used their creativity to solve the problem titled “Lose Your Marbles,” which required teams to design, build, and test a structure, made only of balsa wood and glue, to balance and
support as much weight as possible. The team had to incorporate weight placement and “losing your marbles” into the theme of its performance. Team advisor Brian Rossi said, “These students worked extremely hard to prepare for the regional competition. They stayed at school every day for two weeks until 5:30 p.m. to rehearse and build props for their presentation. They were jumping for joy when they found out they were going to states. I am very proud of them.”

The Massapequa High School Music Department took audiences on a delightful journey to London, England, March 6th and 7th, with its beautiful production of ‘My Fair Lady,’ a story about Eliza Doolittle, a workingclass flower girl who takes speech lessons from an arrogant phonetics professor, Henry Higgins, so that she may speak “proper” English and pass as a refined lady among the ADVANCING TO STATE - Advancing to the state Odyssey of the Mind competition high social classes. The production was directed by district’s English Curriculum Associate Kevin Harrington, who has directed more than 300 musicals throughout his career, and is based on a book by Alan Jay Lerner with music by Frederick Loewe and adapted from George Bernard Shaw’s play and Gabriel Pascal’s motion picture, Pygmalion. There might have been some sad faces after a loss against the New York Rangers on Tuesday night – the final faceoff at Nassau Coliseum for both New York based National Hockey League teams – but the New York Islanders scored big smiles with patients at Stony Brook
Children’s Hospital on Wednesday afternoon as three players visited the hospital. Leaving their skates and sticks at the rink, forward Eric Boulton (#36), defensemen Matt Donovan (#46), and defenseman Brian Strait (#37) delivered tee-shirts, beach towels,
and hats to the patients and their families. Over 40 patients, along with family members, received visits from the players. The threesome walked through the entire in-patient pediatric unit and the out-pediatric hemotology/oncology clinic at Stony Brook
University Cancer Center. They were able to spend some time with the kids, signing autographs, taking pictures and answering a ton of questions from their smallest fans. The visit was organized by the Child Life Program at Stony Brook Children’s and the New York Islanders. Celebrating Child Life Awareness Month, the program has been sponsoring daily activities and visits which highlight what the Child Life Specialists do every day -- provide therapeutic, educational, and recreational activities to meet the unique emotional and developmental needs of hospitalized children. These activities include medical play therapy, games, arts and crafts, as well as specialized programs such as animal assisted therapy, music therapy, and birthday and holiday parties.

Regional Champs The Nassau Community College Women’s Basketball team has won the 2015 National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) Region XV championship. Coached by Kristine Abrams, the Lady
Lions defeated Sullivan Community College to win the title. Second-year student guard Mo Jones (Freeport) was named the tournament MVP for her outstanding play, while first-year forward Jayda Hyatt (Uniondale)
was named to the AllTournament team. “In the beginning of the season we knew we had talent, so we set the goal of having a championship season. We also knew it would take self-discipline and a lot of hard work. We
lost a few games towards the end of the season, but these ladies were set on focusing on our larger goal of a winning a regional championship,” said Coach Abrams. “When we entered post-season I could tell they were very prepared,
and it showed in the quarters, semis and finals. I’m proud of how hard they worked and I look forward to coaching them at the NJCAA Tournament.” Coach Abrams was named Region XV (Division III) Coach of the Year.
The Lady Lions now advance to the 2015 NJCAA National Championship, set to be held March 12th through 14th in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania.
