Social-Distanced Event Protects Environment
Residents who love visiting the beach and want to help protect the shoreline can join Oyster Bay Town Supervisor Joseph Saladino and members of the Town Board at the Towns’ annual Dune Day, scheduled for Saturday, March 27th at TOBAY Beach. The event begins at 10 a.m. by the dunes at TOBAY. Supervisor Saladino stated, “The Dune Stabilization Project brings together residents of all ages in an effort to protect and preserve our beautiful shoreline and environment by planting stalks of dune grass. This year, our event takes a social-distanced approach as volunteers must wear a mask and remain socially distant
for the duration of the event.” The Dune Stabilization Project helps preserve our beach and barrier island for future generations, Volunteers work alongside Town officials and crews, as well as residents from across the Town who share an interest in helping preserve TOBAY Beach. Dunes along our south shore continue to face environmentally damaging storms that have a significant impact on the beach. Statistics indicate that the planting of dune grass provides a natural shield that is perfect for withstanding storm surges and high winds. Residents interested in volunteering or

To raise awareness of pollution and its impact on Mother Nature, Councilwoman Michele Johnson and Councilman Lou Imbroto recently announced a new Environmental Poster Contest open to 4th and 5th grade students in the Town of Oyster Bay. The theme of the poster contest is ‘How Plastic Pollution Harms Our Waterways.’ “This poster contest is a great way to bring more awareness to a critical issue that we are facing today in our environment,” Councilwoman Johnson said. “These posters will not only help inform those who view them, but the simple act of putting together an entry for the contest will help better inform the students of our Town regarding this issue, and this will be knowledge that they will be able to bring forth with them in their lives to help make a difference as they grow up.”
Students should submit a poster to communicate awareness of how items of plastic litter harm our waterways by illustrating the problem of floatables in our waterways. Submissions should be made on large poster paper, with the top three winning posters to be displayed at a Town facility and showcased in a future Town of Oyster Bay Environmental Newsletter. “This contest is being cosponsored by The Waterfront Center and Friends of the Bay to help further protect and preserve the environment. Both of these nonprofit organizations have been a huge asset in helping to protect and preserve our waterways,” said Councilman Imbroto. “I encourage all 4th and 5th grade students in the Town to participate in this program, as it offers an opportunity not only to win amazing prizes, but also an opportunity to become more
educated on the serious issue of plastic pollution in our waterways.” Prizes will be awarded for the top three submissions, with 1st Place receiving a private tour of Oyster Bay Harbor aboard a Friends of the Bay vessel, $200 gift certificate for the Waterfront Center in Oyster Bay, a nautical trivia game, and Friends of the Bay apparel. Submission deadline for the contest is Thursday, April 1, 2021, with winners to be announced on Earth Day, April 22, 2021. Saladino Dedicates Town’s Public Safety Operations Center in Memory of Fallen Officer Oyster Bay Town Supervisor Joseph Saladino recently joined with members of the Town’s Department of Public Safety and the family of fallen Town Public Safety Officer Anthony Cardillo of Massapequa as the Public Safety Operations Center was dedicated in his loving memory. Town Public Safety Officer
Anthony Cardillo died in the line of duty on March 27, 2020, and was just 21 years old when he passed. In his short tenure with the Town, Anthony built a lasting legacy for his consistent dedication, and always putting the needs of others ahead of his own. Supervisor Saladino and members of the Public Safety Department joined
Anthony’s mother Michele and his sister Julie in honoring his memory at the dedication ceremony, and the permanent renaming of the Town’s Operations Center in his honor will forever stand as a reminder of the mutual respect Anthony Cardillo shared with his fellow employees.

Is It Safe To Donate Blood During The Pandemic? Donating blood is a selfless act that saves lives. Blood donors may recognize the vital role they play in patient care, but many may wonder if it’s safe to donate blood during the pandemic. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, it is safe for anyone who is well to donate blood. That even goes for people who are social distancing due
to COVID-19. The CDC has recommended various safety measures to ensure the safety of donors and donation center volunteers and staff members. Such measures include spacing donor chairs at least six feet apart and encouraging donors to make donation appointments ahead of time. Appointments can ensure donors are not spending more time at the donation center
than is absolutely necessary, reducing the likelihood that they have contact with someone who may have COVID-19 but not know it. The Red Cross notes it has instituted additional safety protocols, such as laundering blankets used by donors after each use and requiring all donors and staff to wear face coverings or masks during the donation process.

After a successful fall season, Girls on the Run is back this spring with both virtual and in-person options for girl empowerment in the Long Island area. Girls on the Run (GOTR) is a nonprofit that aims to inspire 3rd- to 8th-grade girls to be joyful, healthy, and confident through running and other physical activity. Each GOTR practice is led by trained volunteers who teach important life lessons such as standing up for oneself, setting and achieving goals, and managing emotions. This past fall Girls on the Run quickly adapted its research-based curriculum and engaging programming to serve girls in the community amidst the global pandemic. Practices are already held outdoors. At practices, participants and coaches maintain social distance and utilize extra sanitation materials. On bad weather days, rain dates or virtual lessons that mirror the in-person lessons can be used if necessary. More than 100 girls participated in the fall and coaches, caregivers, and Girls on the Run staff were all inspired by the results. “This has been such a positive experience for our daughter! T h e Twilight Wish Foundation is a 501(c) (3) non-profit organization whose mission is to honor and enrich the lives of seniors through intergenerational Twilight Wish celebrations. Since the organization’s founding in 2003, their goal has been to make the world a nicer place to age, one Twilight Wish at a time. When a Twilight Wish is granted, a senior is recognized for all that they have done throughout their lives and is shown that they are appreciated and valued. To date, the Twilight Wish Foundation has granted over 3,700 wishes throughout our country and multiple wishes have being granted on Long Island recently! These wishes have ranged from simple needs wishes, such as shaving razors for nursing home veterans, to living life to the fullest wishes, such as going cross country in a tractor trailer truck. Recently, many Long Island residents had their wishes come true. Each week for the remaining weeks this month, I will feature wishes that were granted right here on Long Island, starting with Kathy W. Dorothy Delia is an 87 year old resident of West Babylon. She worked and volunteered for the Salvation Army in Ridegewood and Queens for over 20 years. Prior to COVID, she was very involved in her church by coordinating the prayer chain, greeting worshippers and helping at fundraisers and events. Dorothy desperately needed dental work, but because she lives on a fixed income, she could not afford it on her own. She had been losing teeth and could only eat soft foods. She wished for dental work, which was granted! In February 2020, she got a new healthy smile! Many seniors experience social isolation, which can lead to undesirable
conditions. Granting a Twilight Wish can help change that! You can qualify for a Twilight Wish if you are at least 65 years old, are a legal U.S. citizen, demonstrate financial need, provide a history of giving back to others and possess the cognitive, emotional and physical ability to experience the wish. The Chamber has been busy during the last month. We had our February General Meeting via Zoom which we projected from Allstate: The Zabbia Insurance Agency office. I thank our First Vice President Robert Zabbia for hosting the meeting and facilitating the Zoom call. We had over 20 members on the call, and I appreciate all who participated and made our meeting interesting. Our Executive Board recently met to interview prospective candidates for a Board Vacancy. I would like to welcome The Transfiguration Project owner, Tim Ryan, to our Board. Tim will be a great addition and we look forward to good things from him. Our next General Meeting will be Thursday March 25th, once again via Zoom. We are planning to have the April General Meeting in-person at one of our local restaurants as a luncheon, as we always used to do. Like everybody, we are trying to get back to some normalcy for the Chamber.
Our recent Board Meeting netted some great fundraising ideas. We are looking at a Wine Tasting event to be chaired by J.P. Scarisbrick, as well as a Fall Holiday Fair to be chaired by Robin Hepworth, and finally a Trade Expo to be chaired by Robert Zabbia. These events will assist us in getting through the next few months with needed funding. Past President Anthony Ventiera also informed us that we may be able to have our Street Festival this year, and we look forward to good news with that as we get closer to our aimed timeframe of August. We now have two published authors in the Chamber. Gary Slavin recently published his crime-thriller novel Four Pebbles on a Bench, and Isabelle Rapacciuolo illustrated the children’s book The Adventures of Granny and Lexi Loo. Both are currently available for all to purchase and enjoy, the Chamber will also soon have these great books for sale at a luncheon meeting. Kudos to both Gary and Isabelle on their wonderful achievements.

Sal is always there to assist, and I value him being on the Board with all of his institutional knowledge. Tony Ventiera is a Past President of the Chamber, and he served us well at a time when we needed a calming force for the Chamber Presidency. Tony has been in the Music Industry for a long time, and his bands have entertained us for many years in the Massapequas, especially at our Feasts and Festivals. Councilman Hand Launches Pet Food & Supply Drive in Partnership with LI Cares Councilman Tom Hand announced today that the Town of Oyster Bay will host a Food & Supply Drive in partnership with LI Cares. The drive will take place through April 15th with a focus on collecting for the family members most vulnerable to hunger, residents’ pets. Long Island Cares formed Baxter’s Pet Pantry in 2009 to assist in feeding
dogs, cats, ferrets, rabbits, caged pets, fish, reptiles and all others considered family members. “Pets truly are members of our family,” said Councilman Hand. “Pet food and supply donations will help furry friends in need, which in turn keeps pets at home with their loved ones. The Town of Oyster Bay is proud to partner
with LI Cares to collect generous donations for this worthwhile cause.” The creation of Baxter’s Pet Pantry by Long Island Cares has helped distribute over one million pounds of pet food, all of which has been donated through pet food drives like this one and corporate donations. “Unfortunately many beloved pets are placed
into shelters or given away because families cannot afford the necessary food and supplies,” added Councilman Hand. “When struggling families have to make choices to heat their homes, buy medication or feed their own families, pets can become an afterthought. Pet food drives like this one can be a real lifesaver for both
pets and their families.” Those interested in supporting the pet food drive can place donated items in drop off boxes located in the following Town of Oyster Bay locations: Town Hall North, 54 Audrey Avenue, Oyster Bay Town Hall South, 977 Hicksville Road, Massapequa

New Ground Inc., a local nonprofit that works to break the cycle of homeless for Veterans and families living on Long Island, announced the appointment of Steven Pecorini as President of its Board of Directors. Mr. Pecorini, who joined New Ground’s Board in 2015, succeeds Edward McDougal who served as Board President from 2011-2020. Mr. Pecorini is a pro bono consultant to nonprofits and a retired banking executive. When he left JPMorgan Chase in 2019 after 36 years, Mr. Pecorini’s accomplishments included managing large operating departments, leading financial planning initiatives, and successfully running complex technology projects. He then worked for a year as the Operations Manager with Habitat for Humanity in Nassau County where he performed a wide variety of functions including donor and volunteer management, social media development, and construction coordination. Mr. Pecorini has a MBA from the Columbia Business School and a Bachelor’s degree in Economics from Williams College. Mr. Pecorini and his wife, Mary, reside in Floral Park and are proud parents of three great sons and a wonderful daughterin-law, and are brand new grandparents. Prior to being elected Board President this year, Mr. Pecorini was Vice

a NYC small business owner struggling with the impact of Covid. He also led a volunteer JPMorgan Chase team that developed pricing and cost models for Hot Bread Kitchen’s incubator. Berner Students And Staff Are ‘Souper’ Generous
It may have been called the “Souper Bowl” but students and staff at Berner Middle School in the Massapequa School weren’t limited to bringing in just soup for the annual February food drive. Any non-perishable goods, such as canned vegetables and boxes of macaroni, were welcome. The Chief’s Challenge club, under the direction of adviser Caroline Glynn, hosted the food collection in the week leading up to the biggest football game of the year. They promoted the drive by hanging up posters around the school, and their efforts were successful as students
and staff donated several hundred items in just three days. Students also watched a video about childhood hunger during homeroom to learn about the need. There were two boxes in the auditorium lobby, one for each of the two teams playing in the game, so donors could place food in the box of the team they thought would win. All donations were given to YES Community Counseling Center in Massapequa, which operates a food pantry. Chief’s Challenge member Mia Giannico said the food drive is important at this time of year because many
food pantries have a decline in donations after the holiday surge, yet the need to provide for hungry families on Long Island remains.
