The problem with this is agreeing upon the “happy” medium. The above is one of my favorite quotes, penned by American author Lemony Snicket, creator of the famed “Series of Unfortunate Events” books and several other works. A bit tongue in cheek, with a dash of sarcasm, his words have always resonated with me on many levels. Mostly concerning the irony of life as a whole, they offer an undeniable degree of wisdom in between the cynical undertones. I have often been categorized as an unapologetic idealist; which is to say, optimism mixed with a touch of unrealism. Having taken to heart the expression that you can - quite literally - do anything you put your mind to, I see no valid reason why the seemingly

point of setting goals at all? Sure, the outcome will always be in question; but this is what makes taking calculated risks - and yes, even the occasional blind leap of faith - necessary. It may not pan out the way you desire; but, on the other end, it just might lead to something even more wonderful in the long run. Who’s to say? If life has taught any of us a fairly universal lesson, it is that there are plenty of things beyond our control, just as many things within our grasp; and, as good or bad as a situation may seem at a particular moment, it is apt to change in the blink of an eye. This is why it’s so incredibly important to hold on to the moments of peace and prosperity, fleeting as they may be, while always driving forward to overcome the obstacles which present themselves. If you run over a few lemons in the process; well, that’s what sometimes leads to the sweetest batches of lemonade.

Olympic Stories Debra Cirella, a secondgrade teacher at Lockhart Elementary School in the Massapequa School District, used the 2018 winter Olympics as a learning opportunity for her students. Children developed their research and writing skills while also increasing their technology proficiency. The second-graders created digital nonfiction books using the app Book Creator on Chromebooks.

Each student picked a winter Olympic sport to research such as hockey, figure skating and snowboarding and had to include information about the rules, necessary equipment and famous athletes. Research tools included World Book Children’s Edition, BrainPOP, PebbleGo and Google. Every digital book had to include a table of contents, glossary, fun facts and

about the author page. Children were able to use their creativity in selecting fonts and background colors, as well as designing the layout of their pages with photos. Ms. Cirella partnered with technology learning coach Louisa Vecchione. On February 28th, the class hosted a writing celebration. Children traveled from desk to desk to view each other’s digital books.

Children’s author and illustrator Lauren Castillo inspired young writers and artists during her visit to Unqua Elementary School in the Massapequa School District on February 27th. She spoke to all students during a pair of assemblies, which was sponsored by the PTA. Ms. Castillo then held an informal question

and answer session over a pizza lunch with a select group of fourth- and fifthgraders. The students were chosen following an essay contest, in which interested children wrote about why they wanted to have lunch with a noted author. Ms. Castillo spoke about the writing, editing and

publishing processes, dealing with criticism, authors who inspired her and how she gets ideas for stories. She discussed the importance of reading often and reading different kinds of books, as well as keeping a journal to jot down ideas.

The story of King Charlemagne’s son came to life during Massapequa High School’s production of “Pippin” from March 2nd-4th. The story followed a sorrowful lad who returned from university longing for a life of excitement and adventure. The title role of Pippin was played by Matthew Ferrugia. The two-act “show within a show” featured two dozen musical numbers. Presented by the music department, there was a Thursday afternoon

performance for senior citizens followed by Friday and Saturday night shows. It was directed by Kathryn Tauches. The pit orchestra was led by Eva Arnold and the technical crew was led by Daniel Wahl. Sets were built and designed by art and technology students under the direction of Gale Domingo and James DeSantis.

Listen and Learn After weeks of researching, writing and revising, third-graders shared their completed nonfiction books in Danielle McCaffery’s class at Fairfield Elementary School in the Massapequa School District. Each student picked

an animal to write about, choosing creatures on land and under the sea. They used their Chromebooks to do research and also reviewed other nonfiction books to analyze writing styles. During the week of February 26th, the

class hosted a writing celebration. A few authors shared their books each day as their classmates gathered on the carpet. The listeners had to fill out a sheet about each book to document what they liked and what they learned.

The American Association of Teachers of German has recognized 37 students from the Massapequa School District for their outstanding performance on the 2018 National German Exam for High School Students. Massapequa High School boasted the top-performing student in the region. The exam, which was given in February, tested listening and reading comprehension. German is one of six languages offered through the district’s World Language program. The students are under the tutelage of teachers Dean Guarnaschelli and Brigette Kahn. At Massapequa High School’s main campus, 26 students received recognition. From the

Level 3 class, which is offered to 10th-graders, Christian Snyder was a gold medal recipient, Veronica Pioreck earned silver medal honors and Matthew Boice was a bronze medal winner. Also receiving acknowledgement were Alexander Cicitta, James Murphy, Sean Nuzio and Brianna Utz. From Level 4, which is open to juniors and seniors, gold medal winners were Samantha McGrath, Gillian Murphy and Evan Warns. Evan placed first among all students on Long Island. Other students receiving recognition silver medal winner Thomas Beck and bronze medal recipients Thomas Bradbury, Christopher Braglia, Eric Curran, Christian DeNave

and Kerry Walker. Also recognized were Domenick Anderson, Ryan Cassano, Jacqueline Cipriano, John Gonzalez, Derek Haag, Kerry Hegarty, Paul Lestingi, Andrew O’Brien, Luke Scher and Anthony Soviero. At the Ames campus, 11 ninth-graders in the Level 2 were honored. Furkan Agamak received a gold medal, Ryan Brzezinski earned silver and Zachary Formes, Juliana Lovett and Isabella Quartiere were bronze medal earns. Other students earning recognition were Elisabetta Antonacci, Jeremy Buchalter, Kelly Coll, Dennis Glum, Matthew Johnson and Matthew Siemion.

Mrs. Abreu began by reading Dragon Dance to the children. Mr. Abreu, the dragon, led the parade as the children played the drums and symbols in celebration. This marks the beginning of the Year of the Dog. This is an excellent opportunity for the students to learn about a different culture. Oyster Bay Town Supervisor Joseph Saladino today announced that registration is underway for LAXFEST, a lacrosse tournament for boys PAL teams in grades 2 through 6. The tournament begins Friday, July 20th and run through Sunday, July 22nd, with games being played at both John J. Burns Park and Field of Dreams in Massapequa. “Lacrosse is strongly woven into the fabric of the Long Island community and the Town of Oyster Bay is pleased to partner

with PAL to make this exciting tournament a reality,” said Supervisor Saladino. “We are certainly proud to support PAL with outstanding facilities and assistance. This tournament will feature some the region’s best young lacrosse talent.” Friday games will start at 5:30 p.m. and Saturday and Sunday games will begin at 8:30 a.m. The entry fee is $750 per team and each is required to provide its own insurance. It is also important to note that each player must have a

U.S. Lacrosse number to be eligible to participate in this event.
