Dr. Fagan will discuss the extent of youth/young adult e-cigarette use; health harms associated with

The Spring Equinox The official beginning of spring is a highly anticipated day among people who can’t wait to put away their winter coats and soak up some warm sunlight, but the day of the spring equinox is just as worthy of celebration for its uniqueness as it is for its symbolic connection with the end of winter. According to the Old Farmer’s Almanac, on the spring equinox, which is sometimes referred to as
the “vernal equinox” or the “March equinox,” the sun crosses the celestial equator going south to north. Equinoxes (there’s another one in September each year) are the only two times a year that the sun rises due east and sets due west for everyone on Earth. As the sun passes overhead on the equinox, the tilt of Earth is zero relative to the sun. That means that the planet’s axis
neither points toward or away from the sun. Though it’s understandable why so many people appreciate the spring equinox, which ushers in increasing sunlight hours and later sunsets, the day’s uniqueness makes it even more worthy of celebration. This year the spring equinox happens on 11:33 AM on Sunday, March 20 in the northern hemisphere.

The BRIDGES program also includes on site recovery support groups, drop-in hours and wellness/self-care workshops and it provides prevention programs and self-care workshops to staff, students and young adults at high schools, colleges and other organizations.

Thriving communities for businesses to flourish: Thriving communities are good for business. According to the investment plan laid out by NY Renews, in addition to funding renewable energy investments, the $15 billion fund will also go towards improving public transit, public housing, and public schools, all necessary infrastructure for communities to succeed. Additional funding will go towards community-based organizations in neighborhoods most impacted by pollution and the climate crisis to fund local projects that increase our renewable energy supply, make homes and buildings more efficient, and increase resilience to climate change. A significant portion of this funding will go to low-income communities of color, which have received historically inadequate investments from the state and are most vulnerable to pollution and climate change. All of these investments will help New York communities thrive.
This is why we strongly encourage you to allocate, at minimum, $15 billion in climate, jobs, and justice funding in this year’s New York State budget. These funds will benefit businesses and the communities which we serve in a multitude of ways: Creating jobs and increasing spending power: Investing $15 billion yearly in climate, jobs, and justice will create and sustain 150,000 good-paying jobs over the next decade. Creating stable jobs in renewable energy, building efficiency, public transit, and supportive industries will grow New York’s economy and increase spending power. This is good for New Yorkers, and it’s good for business. New York has the opportunity to be a business leader in renewable energy specifically, creating these jobs here in our state rather than allowing other states to overtake us in this critical and growing market. All jobs created — in renewable energy and otherwise — are good news for New York.
It’s clear that this $15 billion investment makes good business sense for New York. We strongly encourage the governor and legislature to include this funding in this year’s New York State budget.

Stable investments in building a renewable energy economy: Under the CLCPA, New York must run on 100% renewable electricity by 2040, and our entire economy must be carbon-neutral by 2050. We have made pitiful progress: just 31% of our electric generation comes from renewable sources, and since 2019, we have reduced our economy-wide emissions by only 6%. Moreover, New York currently sends over $30 billion out of state every year to purchase fossil fuels. It’s clear that New York needs significant and consistent funding allocations to meet the goals of the CLCPA and realize the benefits of the law for New Yorkers. How To Contribute To The Red Cross
Every March, the American Red Cross honors and celebrates the everyday heroes who help fulfill our humanitarian mission during Red Cross Month. The American Red Cross and the Canadian Red Cross help communities in their own countries and across the globe every day. The Red Cross is perhaps most visible in the aftermath of natural disasters. However, the American Red Cross and the Canadian Red Cross are active year-round, and there are plenty of ways for individuals to contribute to both organizations throughout the year. • Receive training from the Red Cross. The Red Cross notes that many professions require individuals to master lifesaving skills such as CPR and first aid. But millions of people are not required to learn such skills, even though they’re useful for anyone. The Red Cross offers an array of courses, including lifeguarding, caregiving and babysitting, swimming and water safety, that train individuals about how to effectively prepare to respond to emergencies.
Enrolling in these courses contributes to the mission of the Red Cross by building its potential base of qualified volunteers who can pitch in when natural disasters or other emergencies occur. • Donate blood. Blood donations are uniquely valuable to the Red Cross at any time, but the organization noted in early 2022 that it was experiencing its worst blood shortage in more than a decade. The Red Cross notes that the pandemic contributed to a 62 percent decline in college and high school blood drives. So while student donors made up roughly 25 percent of all donors in 2019, they now make up just 10 percent of the donor population. Eligible adults, including students, can contribute to the Red Cross by donating as often as possible. Students back on campus can work with school officials and local Red Cross chapters to organize blood drives in their school communities. • Pitch in with disaster relief. The American Red Cross notes that it responds to an emergency every eight minutes. Perhaps
most remarkable is that 95 percent of the organization’s disaster relief workers are volunteers. The American Red Cross and the Canadian Red Cross rely on volunteers from all walks of life, and each organization has plenty of opportunities for individuals willing to give back. The Red Cross provides emergency financial assistance in the immediate aftermath of a disaster, but also offers such aid to households that need extra help in the long-term. The financial contributions of donors help make that assistance possible and both the American Red Cross and the Canadian Red Cross have made it easy to donate funds via their respective websites. Individuals who want to assist the American Red Cross and Canadian Red Cross help those in need can do so in myriad ways.
Paws Of War Provides Long Island Veterans With Free Wellness Care Checkups For Their Service Animals In support of their mission of giving back to veterans and first responders, nonprofit Paws of War recently hosted their “Hearts and Heroes” event at their headquarters in Nesconset, where they provided 27 service animals with free veterinary care, which included wellness checks, flea and tick medications, vaccinations, bags of dog food and microchipping service. The pandemic has brought financial challenges to veterans and first responders Many disabled veterans live on low or fixed incomes and their service animal’s medical care is essential so they can provide the level of support and comfort upon which the veterans depend. “As a former veteran, I know how critical and expensive it is to take care of these service animals. They are more than just pets; these animals provide emotional support and tasks for these heroes when it is needed most,” said Kelli Porti, Veteran & Community Outreach Liaison for Paws of War. Dr. Marissa Altieri, DVM, volunteered her expert veterinary care to the pop-up clinic and its patients, donating her time to assist Paws of War as a way to give back to the community and support the non-profit’s mission.

Councilwoman Maier Launches Pet Food & Supply Drive In Partnership With LI Cares Councilman Laura Maier announced today that the Town of Oyster Bay will host a Pet Food & Supply Drive in partnership with LI Cares. The drive will take place from March 15th to April 15th with a focus on collecting for the family members most vulnerable to hunger, residents’ pets. Long Island Cares formed Baxter’s Pet Pantry in
2009 to assist in feeding dogs, cats, ferrets, rabbits, caged pets, fish, reptiles and all others considered family members. “Pets truly are members of our family,” said Councilwoman Maier. “Pet food and supply donations will help furry friends in need, which in turn keeps pets at home with their loved ones. The Town of Oyster
Bay is proud to partner with LI Cares to collect generous donations for this worthwhile cause.” The creation of Baxter’s Pet Pantry by Long Island Cares has helped distribute over one million pounds of pet food, all of which has been donated through pet food drives like this one and corporate donations. “Unfortunately many
beloved pets are placed into shelters or given away because families cannot afford the necessary food and supplies,” added Councilwoman Maier. “When struggling families have to make choices to heat their homes, buy medication or feed their own families, pets can become an afterthought. Pet food drives like this one can be a real lifesaver

Residents Invited To Submit Photos For Town Publications Oyster Bay Town Councilwoman Michele Johnson invites residents to submit photos taken in the Town of Oyster Bay to be considered for future use in Town publications. “Our residents recently received their 2022 Town calendar, which is filled with photos submitted throughout the year depicting people, places, community events and scenery throughout our Town,” said Councilwoman Johnson. “We accept

To raise awareness of pollution and its impact on Mother Nature, Oyster Bay Town Supervisor Joseph Saladino and Councilwoman Vicki Walsh announced the return of the Town’s Environmental Poster Contest, open to all 4th grade students in the Town of Oyster Bay. This year’s poster contest, Our Town Our Environment, invites youngsters to create a poster depicting ‘How Plastic Pollution Harms our Waterways.’ “This poster contest presents a great opportunity to bring environmental awareness to our young people, making them more knowledgeable on the importance of protecting our waterways and safeguarding our natural resources,” said Supervisor Saladino. Students should submit a poster to communicate
awareness of how items of plastic litter harm our waterways by illustrating the problem of floatables in our waterways. Submissions should be made on large poster paper, with the top three winning posters to be displayed at a Town facility and showcased in a future Town of Oyster Bay Environmental Newsletter. “This contest is being co-sponsored by The Waterfront Center and Friends of the Bay, two organizations that greatly contribute to our efforts in further protecting and preserving the environment. Both of these nonprofit organizations have been a huge asset in helping protect our waterways,” said Councilwoman Walsh. “I invite all 4th grade students to participate in this great program, which provides a great opportunity to

become more educated on the serious issue of plastic pollutions in our waterways with the potential of winning some great prizes.” Prizes will be awarded for the top three submissions, with 1st Place receiving a private tour of Oyster Bay Harbor aboard a Friends of the Bay vessel, $200 gift certificate for the Waterfront Center in Oyster Bay, a tree planted at the winning student’s school for Arbor Day, a nautical trivia game, and Friends of the Bay apparel. Submission deadline for the contest is Friday, April 1st, with winners to be announced on Earth Day, April 22nd. Along with their poster submission, students must include an entry form, which is available at www.oysterbaytown. com/postercontest. Submissions should be
made on 12’x18’ poster paper. Students name and school should be printed clearly at the bottom.
