The Town of Oyster Bay’s Children’s Magical Music & More program will feature three excellent performances in March beginning with “Central Park Zoo: Butterfly Boogie,” a musical, interactive performance that counters the common perception of bugs being gross and introduces students to metamorphosis and the interdependence of plants and animals. Butterfly Boogie will be held at the Locust Valley Public Library, located at 170 Buckram Road, Locust Valley on Saturday, March 11th at 2:00 p.m. and is free to all Town residents. Throughout the year, the Town’s Children’s Magical Music & More program provides quality entertainment to families and children around the Town of Oyster Bay free of charge. Butterfly Boogie is just one of the many Children’s Magical Music &

More performances offered by the program this year. Seating is on a first-comefirst-serve basis and each event is recommended for children four years of age and older. The second Children’s Magical Music & More performance in March would be face painter Christopher Agostino’s “StoryFaces.” StoryFaces is an exciting and unusual storytelling show where volunteers are brought on stage and are face painted to illustrate stories as Christopher tells them, captivating the audience with folktales and his uniquely animated original stories. This performance will take place on Sunday, March 12th, at 1:00 p.m. at the Massapequa Public Library located at 40 Harbor Lane, in Massapequa. The third and final Children’s Magical Music & More performance

scheduled for March will be a performance by talented juggler; Jester Jim. Audience members of all ages will be glued to every sound of Jester Jim’s performance. With a trunk full of props and a looping machine, Jester Jim takes the stage and starts his show with an amazing beatbox intro. Jester Jim is scheduled to perform on Saturday, March 25th at 2:00 p.m. at the Hicksville Public Library, located on 169 Jerusalem Ave, Hicksville. The Children’s Magical Music & More series is sponsored by the Cultural and Performing Arts (CAPA) Division of the Town of Oyster Bay’s Department of Community & Youth Services. Distinguished Artists The Town of Oyster Bay 2017 Distinguished Artists Concert series rolls into March with several enjoyable performances scheduled to take place at various libraries throughout the Town. The enjoyable and diverse performances featured at each of the Town’s Distinguished Artists concerts have delighted residents throughout the years and continue to return each year thanks to popular demand. I remember the day like it was yesterday… which is fairly impressive, considering it was actually 17 years ago, to the day in fact. This momentous occasion of which I speak, on March 8th, 2000, was the date I was told by our high school principal that I was, in fact, “officially” the valedictorian of our senior class. I can’t say the news was a complete shock, as we had all been given informal ranks pending the start of the college application process several months prior. At the time, my guidance counselor had informed my parents and I that all paperwork sent out from the administrative offices would name me as “approximately” first, a fact that I had never even thought to consider up until that very moment. I had always enjoyed school and had accumulated a collection of Honors and Advanced Placement classes

on my transcript by my senior year; but class rank was not something I had ever particularly focused my attention on. I knew it existed, obviously; but most colleges were more concerned with your overall GPA and SAT scores, not your comparison among a class of your peers. As I rounded the corner on that afternoon, en route to our “rotunda” outside the cafeteria, I was startled to find the principal seated there next to one of my friends. “Oh good, you’re here,” he said. Uh oh, I thought. My mind raced, trying to determine what I could have done to warrant this unexpected visit. Next to him, my friend had a sly smile on his face. What is this about? I couldn’t imagine. “I have some news,” he grinned, standing up and extending his hand in congratulations. “It’s official – you’re number one.” And there it was. Twelve years of hard work and

dedication, culminating in that moment, that handshake – and those five words. It was unforgettable, so much so that I chose to capture the instant in one of my college scholarship essays. The theme was “The Most Memorable Moment of My Life.” And it was; possibly, still is. The bell rang, signaling it was time to head to our next class. But I had something to do first. I raced over to the wall of payphones by our front entrance, digging for quarters as I ran through the hallway (remember, this was 17 years ago). My hands shaking, I excitedly dialed my home number. “Mom!” I practically squealed into the receiver. “Guess what???” Since then, that date has been ingrained in my mind. Each year, it comes and goes, bringing with it a smile as I recall all the happy memories of a moment that seems so fresh … and yet, so very, very long ago. Officially.

Warming Up to Art Art students at Birch Lane Elementary School in the Massapequa School District learned about the difference between warm colors and cool colors by creating three-dimensional projects. Led by teacher Nicole Hassell, fourth-graders used weaving and looming techniques to make webs with construction paper.

Students could choose to make warm webs with strips of red, orange and yellow paper, or cool webs with shades of green, blue and purple. In two rows of boxes on the floor made from masking tape, students carefully arranged their webs. By mixing the warm and cool colors just right, the young artists

learned about balance and composition. Ms. Hassell said the purpose of the project was to teach them a new technique that built off of the art skills they have learned in the past. The webs created by all fourth-grade students will be used for a larger art project to hang in the lobby.

Capturing the Title The Massapequa High School girls varsity gymnastics team captured its second straight title during the championship meet on February 16th in Bethpage. The Chiefs went undefeated this season to

place first in Conference I. Three members of the team, Heidi Baldinger, Elizabeth Murphy and Gillian Murphy, qualified for the New York State meet. They will represent Nassau County during the

competition at Cold Spring Harbor High School on March 4th. The girls were led by head coach Michael Capone and assistant coach Lisa Ranneklev.

Soldier Collection Drive The Town of Oyster Bay is participating in a 2017 Soldier Collection Drive in an effort to gather needed supplies to be sent to the men and women serving around the globe and is asking residents to help support the drive. This is the tenth year the Town is participating in this collection drive. Last year, Town residents, with the assistance of the Town workforce, donated more than 1,800 pounds of much-needed supplies. This year, with residents’ support, they hope to surpass that amount. Anyone interested in donating to the collection drive may drop off items at Town Hall North in Oyster Bay; Department of Public Works (CSEA entrance) in Syosset; Town Hall South in Massapequa; and at the

Town of Oyster Bay Ice Skating Center at Bethpage Community Park. The collection drive will end on Friday, April 7th. While Bill made the gesture quietly and without

fanfare, his efforts speak volumes about the respect and admiration Americans have for their veterans. Supervisor Saladino and the Town Board presented Bill with a citation in recognition of his efforts to do something selfless and to honor those who have served and those who continue to serve in America’s armed forces.

Hoops for Heart Ninth-grade students at Massapequa High School’s Ames Campus recently participated in the Hoops for Heart 3-on3 Basketball Tournament. The effort helped raised

approximately $1,450 for the American Heart Association. The event was organized by physical education teacher Gennaro Trotta. The winning team was

John Cuttitta, Nick Bianco and Brendan Brookmeyer, whose sudden-death overtime victory in the finals capped an exciting event.

Saladino and New York Rangers legends Adam Graves and Tom Laidlaw recently joined with some of the young participants of the “Try Hockey for Free Program,” which is run in conjunction with the Town of Oyster Bay and the New York Rangers of the National Hockey League. The event, which took place at the state-ofthe-art Town of Oyster Bay Ice Skating Center located in Bethpage, allowed youngsters a unique opportunity to

sample the sport of ice hockey. “Youngsters, under the watchful eye of New York Rangers alumni, the New York Rangers Hockey Development Team and Town of Oyster Bay instructors, were provided with equipment to participate in the free clinic, which introduced them to the exciting sport of ice hockey,” said Supervisor Saladino. “The session also gave parents the opportunity to assess if the sport of ice hockey was a good fit for their youngster, without making an initial financial

commitment.” Supervisor Saladino noted that the “Try Hockey for Free” program is part of a nationwide effort by USA Hockey to provide youngsters of all economic backgrounds, an opportunity to play hockey.
