Signs You May Have A Thyroid Problem The thyroid gland plays an essential role in the human body. According to the online healthcare publishing company Medicine.net, the thyroid is a butterfly-shaped gland in the front of the neck that produces the hormones that regulate metabolism. When the thyroid gland’s ability to do its job is compromised, the effects can be serious and lead to a host of symptoms that don’t go away. Thyroid conditions vary, and as a result, that can produce their own distinct symptoms. The Harvard Medical School notes that the thyroid can be overactive (hyperthyroidism) or underactive (hypothyroidism). An overactive thyroid will produce too much hormones, while an underactive thyroid won’t produce enough. Symptoms of both hyperthyroidism and hypothyroidism can overlap, but each condition has its
own unique symptoms as well. What are the symptoms of hyperthyroidism? • Fatigue • Fast heartbeat • Trouble concentrating • Increased appetite • Sweating • Nervousness, restlessness • Unintentional weight loss What are the symptoms of hypothyroidism? • Fatigue • Increased sensitivity to cold • Muscle weakness • Brittle nails and hair • Hoarse voice • Unintentional weight gain The online medical resource Healthline notes that most cases of hypothyroidism and hyperthyroidism cannot be prevented. For example, hyperthyroidism is often caused by Graves’ disease,
an immune system disorder that’s most common among women. Some peoples’ thyroids have become overactive because they consumed too many foods that contained iodine, such as table salt, fish and seaweed. However, Healthline notes that such instances are rare. While people may not be able to prevent thyroid conditions from developing, they can keep a watchful eye out for any of the aforementioned symptoms of overactive or underactive thyroids. Any such symptoms should be reported to a physician immediately. Medicine.net notes that, in most cases, thyroid disorders can be managed with treatment and are not life-threatening. However, the outlook for people with thyroid conditions is always better when symptoms are reported early.

Stop World Hunger Presents Upcoming Events Over the past 39 years, Stop World Hunger Inc. has forwarded $136,110.65 to Catholic Relief Services to assist them in their efforts to feed God’s hungry children “where the need is greatest”, regardless of race, religion and/or nationality. In addition, they collect food for our hungry neighbors on Long Island. Stop World Hunger is pleased to launch their 40th year of tennis fundraisers. A Timeless Love Story Coming To Massapequa Stage Inspired by the movie set in the 1980s, that delighted theatergoers in the 1990s, Massapequa High School’s Drama Club will present “The Wedding Singer” during the first weekend of March. The comedic love story features 70 student-actors who will perform songs such as “It’s Your Wedding Day,” “Saturday Night in the City” and “Casualty of Love.” Junior Daniel Siani and senior Kate Smith, both in their third show on the Massapequa High School stage, will portray main characters Robbie Hart and Julia Sullivan. Other leading roles include senior Zachary Morana as
Glen, junior Jackie Romeo as Rosie, senior Adam Koch as Sammy, sophomore Emmeline McBride as Holly, junior Joey Casali as George and senior Julianna Mpazicos as Linda. Kate described “The Wedding Singer” as an energetic show with lots of singing and dancing while Daniel noted its appeal to audiences of all ages. “I like that it has something for everyone,” he said. “The story relates to any generation and everyone can enjoy the humor.” Added Kate, “It’s one of the funniest shows I’ve ever been in and every person is casted perfectly.”

Massapequa Takes Action Coalition (MTAC) Featured On Regional Television Program Massapequa Takes Action Coalition (MTAC), a local non-profit prevention and outreach coalition serving the Massapequa and Massapequa Park community was recently featured on a syndicated television show titled, The Donna Drake Show! The nationally syndicated television program focuses on topics of motivation and inspiration, providing insight and good news stories. MTAC’s Project Director, Cathy Samuels and Mark Wenzel, MTAC Co-Chair and Assistant Director, YES Community Counseling Center were both interviewed in front of a live studio audience. The discussion and interview was lead by host Donna Drake and topics included how MTAC began in the Massapequa community, substance abuse and prevention tips, early intervention with young students and parents, and how the coalition is making
an impact and a difference in the lives of young people in Massapequa. Amazing Benefits To Seniors Having Pets Pets bring much joy to the lives they touch. So it should come as no surprise that the 2019-2020 National Pet Owners Survey, which was conducted by the American Pet Products Association, found that about 85 million families in the United States own a pet. In Canada, 7.5 million households are home to companion animals, states the PetBacker blog. Pets offer companionship and unconditional love. While they are fitting for any family, seniors may find that having a pet is especially beneficial. The organization A Place for Mom, which helps match families with senior living residences, says pets provide a comfort system that produces measurable health results. Caring for pets and being around them can produce a chemical chain reaction in the brain that may help to lower stress hormones while also increasing production of the feelgood hormone serotonin. This is not the only health benefit pets may provide. A recent study from the Mayo Clinic, which looked at 1,800 people between the ages of 25 and 64 who had healthy hearts, found that almost half owned a dog. Having a dog was likely to spur heart-healthy behaviors, like exercising with the pet, eating well and having ideal blood sugar levels. Pets also provide emotional support and companionship that can help seniors — including those who may be divorced or widowed — feel more secure and happy. The National Poll on Healthy Aging found that, among respondents who had pets, 88 percent said their pets helped them enjoy life, and 86 percent said their pets made them feel loved. Seniors considering getting a pet can explore the many benefits to doing so. • Reduce pain: A 2012 study published in Pain Magazine found therapy dogs provided “significant reduction in pain and emotional distress for chronic pain patients.”
• Feeling of purpose: Caring for an animal not only stimulates physical activity, but it also can give seniors a reason to get up and go, which equates to a feeling of purpose. • Altered focus: Having a pet can help seniors focus on something other than physical or mental health issues and preoccupations about loss or aging, according to New York-based psychologist Penny B. Donnenfeld. • Increased physical activity: Pets require care, and that interaction can get seniors moving more than if they didn’t have a pet. • Improved health: Ongoing research from Harvard Medical School has found dog owners have lower blood pressure, healthier cholesterol levels and lower risk of heart disease than those who don’t own a dog. • Stick to routine: Caring for pets helps seniors maintain a routine. Having structure after retirement can be important to ward off risk of depression. Staying on top of feeding, grooming and other pet needs also can help prevent cognitive decline. Pets bring many benefits to their owners’ lives, and they may be the perfect remedy for seniors looking for a friend and purpose.

Hooping And Hopping For Heart Health At Birch Lane Encouraging students to develop lifelong healthy habits is a key mission for physical education instructors throughout the Massapequa School District. In February, children at Birch Lane Elementary School participated in the Heart Health Challenge, learning some simple activities that they can do to stay in shape. During their physical education classes with teachers Chris Cafiero and
Amanda Ostapow, students rotated through multiple stations that allowed them to exercise different parts of their bodies and strengthen their hearts. There was a basketball station, scooting racing, hula hoops, jumping jacks, burpees, juggling and line jumps. Students could also run, jog or walk around the perimeter of the gym. Each day featured a different heart-related fact on the bulletin board outside the gymnasium.
Students also learned how to find their pulse and calculate their target heart rate based on their age. The Heart Health Challenge also served as a fundraiser for the American Heart Association, with Birch Lane students raising about $10,000. (ages 5-12) starting on Wednesday, March 25th at the Massapequa Bar Harbour Library located at 40 Harbor Lane in Massapequa Park from 7:00pm – 8:30pm for six consecutive weeks.
