Confucius said, “The man who moves a mountain begins by carrying away small stones.” Such is the principle of proactivity based upon, of taking small steps to advance great lengths, ultimately. The key, of course, it to begin the process. Complacency is man’s worst enemy; however, settling into such a mindset is perhaps one of the simplest tasks to accomplish. Never mind that “To Do” list – it will be there tomorrow. And the next day. And the day after that. This is closely followed by its evil bedfellow, entitlement; that sense that you somehow deserve more than you have without feeling the need to prove it, or earn it, as the case

may be. Together, these flaws can lead once promising, motivated individuals down a path of bitterness, resentment and arrogance – not a flattering combination. The problem is, you don’t see it happening. You exist day to day, you settle into your routines, and then…well, then you just settle. Plain and simple. Ambition flies out the window, and with it, that drive that propelled you forward for so many years falls flat. As easy as it is to fall prey to this downward spiral, it takes a concerted effort to right the ship and get back on course. This is where the “small stones” come into play. Even something as simple as making lists, outlines of what needs to be done in a

Being a student in seventh grade and a victim of bullying, my definition for bullying is when somebody thinks you are weak, “odd” or strange and makes fun of you for being who you are simply because you are different than them. Bullying is a very serious subject. Many cases of bullying happen each day, and kids do not tell an adult so they can get help putting an end to it. I made this mistake. I did not initially tell an adult, and this lack of action only made it worse for me. If you are getting bullied, you need to tell somebody or

you could eventually become self-conscious and doubt yourself. You could lose selfesteem and believe that you are what the bully says you are and isolate yourself from your friends. You think to yourself when your friends invite you to hang out, “They are only going to turn their backs on me too. I should just stay away from them from now on so they do not bully me.” Your friends may sometimes be the only people to help in these situations. When I was bullied, it was for three years! One in ten people get bullied every day. If you notice somebody being bullied, you need to stand up for them and tell the bully, “Stop it! Leave them alone.” If you are continuing to see somebody being bullied, you need to get an adult

immediately. Sometimes you may think that people are just joking around, but their intentions are to just make fun of you without you actually realizing what they are doing to you. Bullying does not have to be just verbal; it can also be cyber bullying and also physical bullying. In my case, I was verbally bullied. The words hurt dreadfully, but one way of handling it was by talking to my family. This was my way of getting the point that I was being bullied out, and I was able to also communicate my feelings when I talked about my situation. My family guided me in techniques to handle the situation and how to put an end to the bullying. Bullying is a serious subject.

The Town of Oyster Bay Ice Skating Center is currently offering early bird registration for the Town’s Summer Hockey School program, developed by The Rinx Hockey School at the Town’s Ice Skating Center, located at 1001 Stewart Avenue in Bethpage, according to Town Councilman Chris J. Coschignano. Hockey enthusiasts can sign up for any number of weekly sessions at discounted prices now through April 1st, 2015, from one week to all eight weeks of the program. “This summer, hockey players in the Town of Oyster Bay will have the unique opportunity to develop and learn new hockey skills in weeklong sessions designed specifically for their talent level,” Councilman Coschignano said. “Parents may register their children now for the Rinx Summer Hockey School, which is not only a great way for kids to spend the summer, but is also an excellent opportunity for them to fine tune their hockey skills.” C o u n c i l m a n Coschignano commented on the schedule for the

hockey school. “The program, which is slated to begin June 29th and run through August 17th, will include a full day of on-ice and off-ice training run by trained hockey professionals. Throughout the week, participants will receive the benefit of 15 to 20 hours of on-ice training and 6 to 8 hours of off-ice training. The program will be broken down into two levels, intermediate and advanced. The intermediate skills program is for ages 5 through 12 and will include 15 hours of on-ice training per week and over 8 hours of training per week off the rink. The advanced session is geared for travel players

ages 6 through 14 and includes 20 hours of onice training and 6 hours of training per week off the ice. Both skill programs focus on shooting, passing, agility drills and field sports. Lunch every day is included. “The Summer Hockey School sessions will be challenging, but will result in newly developed skills for our young hockey players,” Councilman Coschignano said. “Each class will be filled with useful tips and techniques to fully develop each student’s hockey playing abilities.” “The Rinx Summer

From the “Hurtometer” to the “Shampooch,” more than 70 fifth and sixth graders from Massapequa Schools’ academically gifted Magnet program dazzled parents and educators alike with innovations they created for the district’s first “Invention Convention.” Set up like a science fair, students showcased their creativity, critical thinking and problem-solving skills with colorful trifold displays that explained what their inventions were, how they came up with the idea, how they operated, and their cost. Have you ever gotten something stuck in your vacuum cleaner that’s interfering with its suction? Unqua fifth grader Jonathan Berzner can take care of that with his SmallSaver invention — a mini vacuum that sucks up objects that get caught in a full-size vacuum cleaner. Is your violin or viola sadly out of tune? No worries. East Lake sixth grader Ryan Wienczorkowski can fix it with his automatic tuner. Ryan repurposed a watch into a tuner that straps onto the instrument and, with the mechanism that tightens or loosens the strings, tunes it to the right note/pitch. McKenna fifth grader Emma Reilly had multitasking in mind when she came up with the Electric Mouth Brush. It looks like a mold of your mouth with battery-operated spinning bristles in it to clean your mouth like an electric toothbrush, but this one is hands free and dispenses its own toothpaste. “It’s great for when you are running short on time in

the morning before school or if you have other things to do before you go to bed at night. You can do them simultaneously,” Emma said. Students were intrigued by Robert Veech, best known for inventing the Pooper Scooper, Richard Edelman, who invented numerous fitness–related board games and other innovations, Art Lih, longtime Massapequa resident who developed the LifeVac, a device that saves children from choking, and Steven Hanania, whose expertise in robotics led to inventions such as his voice–activated mechanical arm and his sound-activated mousetrap. “Mr. Hanania’s inventions were really good and fun to watch because they were interactive,” said Lindsey Black, a fifth grader from Fairfield Elementary School. Lockhart fifth grader Tricia Krakoff was equally impressed with Lih’s LifeVac. “It’s an important product because it will save a life,” she said. Massapequa Schools Superintendent Lucille F. Iconis called the event, “a spectacular display of ingenuity” and commended the students on their innovations and the Magnet teachers for coordinating the successful event. “This was a way for all the Magnet students from each elementary school to share ideas and celebrate their achievements after working for weeks on their inventions,” said McKenna Elementary School Magnet teacher Elizabeth Natke. “The idea of bringing in actual inventors brought to life what inventors do and how they can change the way we lead our lives.”

CELEBRATING ANCIENT GREECE - Sixth graders at Fairfield Elementary School participate in Toga Day to reinforce their lessons on ancient civilizations.

Soldier Collection Drive The Town of Oyster Bay is participating in a 2015 Soldier Collection Drive in an effort to gather needed supplies to be sent to the men and women serving around the globe and is asking residents to help support the drive, according to Town Councilman Anthony D. Macagnone, who noted that this is the eighth year the Town is participating in this collection drive. “Last year, Town residents, with the assistance of the CSEA, donated more than 2,000 pounds of much-needed supplies,” Councilman Macagnone stated. “This year, with residents’ support, we hope to surpass that amount.” Anyone interested in donating to the collection drive may drop off items at Town Hall North in Oyster Bay; Department of Public Works (CSEA entrance) in Syosset; Town Hall South in Massapequa; and at the

Spring Softball Registration Registration is now underway for the Town of Oyster Bay’s spring softball night men’s league hosted by the Town’s Department of Parks, according to Town Councilman Joseph G. Pinto. “While we are still in the middle of an icy and snowy winter, residents can warm up to the thought of another exciting spring softball season in the near future,” Councilman Pinto said. “There is nothing like a great game of softball and the camaraderie of teammates.” According to Councilman Pinto, the Town of Oyster Bay’s softball league is widely respected, and players look forward to the competition and exercise. “The league is very well organized, and players will have an opportunity to play on fields considered to be among the finest in

the nation,” Councilman Pinto said. “This program offers a great recreational and social outlet for all participants, bringing Town athletes together for night-time softball games that are competitive and fun.” The Men’s night league generally plays Monday through Thursday, with games starting between 8 and 9 p.m., in addition to the occasional Saturday game. “Game times and locations will vary throughout the season,” explained Councilman Joseph Pinto. Only teams with completed registration requirements will be given consideration. Any team looking to register must also submit insurance certificates (MAIL-IN ONLY) as proof of insurance, along with

an endorsement of the policy. Thursday’s award ceremony invited children and parents together to view the art and collect ribbons for a job well done. That same day all of the artists who participated received a pizza luncheon courtesy of the PTA. The school’s assistant principal Christine Harris kicked off the event congratulating the students. Joyce BeckerSeddio, the school’s principal also attended the event in support of Birch’s

exceptional students. Birch Lane children in grades kindergarten through sixth submitted their entries in November, with every one inspired by this year’s national theme, The World Would Be a Better Place If. Artists chose from one or more of the contest’s six categories: photography, visual arts, literature, dance choreography, music composition, and film production. Entries were judged with a rubric that took into account not only artistic talent, but how well children understood the theme and were able to tie it to their projects through a written statement. The Birch Lane building had 17 winners chosen by subject matter expert judges from Massapequa High School and administration. Those artists moved on to the Nassau County level of the event. From there, three works of art have moved on

to the New York State level including two photographs taken by Gerard Beleckas and Anna Campanaro, respectively and a story written by Muriel LaMassa. In April, those students will find out if they have moved on to the national level of the contest. “The Reflections program is so important because it escalates fine arts and lets children think outside the box,” said Karen Stealey, Birch Lane’s Reflections chairperson. “You can see how much the kids loved showcasing their skills for their friends and families.” In fact, many of the children are already getting excited about next year’s theme, Let Your Imagination Fly. Take Heart With Tea An apple a day may keep the doctor away, but a recent study found drinking tea might keep the cardiologist at bay.

The USDA reported that men and women who drank black tea for three weeks reduced their total and bad

cholesterol (LDL) levels by an average of 7.5 percent. Researchers concluded that drinking tea may reduce the

risk of coronary heart disease. Antioxidants called flavonoids, found in both green and black teas, are thought to

be potent weapons in the fight against heart disease. That news may be especially important

for women, given that heart disease kills more women than all forms of cancer combined including breast cancer.
