being a bridge here before?). And on the return trip, there was more of the same – except, not quite the same, as we detoured through an entirely different neighborhood. How is this possible?? At a certain point, it became more a source of amusement, a fun guessing game as to which way she might send us next. Amazingly, our time of arrival only fluctuated by a minute or so, in spite of the fact that our route never came close to matching the virtually straight line that had appeared on the map. It was a bizarre journey, to be sure – and will continue to be, should we venture that way again. That, at least, seems to be a guarantee.

I’m fairly good with directions. For someone who, as a passenger, is rather oblivious to her surroundings, once in the driver’s seat, I can generally navigate with little trouble. Of course, in this day and age, there is always the added benefit of GPS to fall back on. And by benefit, I mean often maddening source of frustration and bewilderment. Case in point: my friend and I have, over the last several years, attended several of the laser light shows at the Vanderbilt Planetarium. Of course, there are several possible routes to take, but all roads ultimately lead to one winding, somewhat meandering path through the
hilly terrain of Centerport. As these shows are generally in the evening, I always plug the address into the phone’s map so as to be sure I don’t miss a turn en route. Of the approximately half a dozen times we have headed this way, I can honestly say we have never managed to travel the same way twice. Never. Not once. Just last week, as if to prove the point, my phone’s darling virtual assistant proceeded to take us on a grand tour of the residential area surrounding the planetarium, complete with dozens of unnecessary turns (followed by U-turn’s and “rerouting”), forks in the road (continue heading straight, she said) and even a pass over a small body of water (do you remember there

To enhance their knowledge of Greek mythology, sixth-grade students at Lockhart Elementary School in the Massapequa School District created their own Greek theater masks depicting the noted gods and goddesses. Thousands of years ago,
people in Greece performed plays to entertain and inform, in which the gods and goddesses became the main characters in the myths that were told. Former Lockhart teacher Larry Laifer brought his program to the school, “Greek Mythology Unmasked.”
Positive Post-Its
Students used their creativity and imaginations to make their own masks and bring these characters to life, just as the Greeks did in ancient times. The program also included songs, writing activities and games on the SmartBoard.
The Positive Post-It Campaign has come to the Massapequa School District. During the week of February 13th-17th, elementary students used sticky notes to spread messages of joy. The movement was started in 2014 by a Canadian teenager after being the victim of cyberbullying. Instead of retaliating, she decided to spread cheer. Many schools have now adopted this action to support character education programs. At Unqua Elementary School, students drew
pictures or wrote positive phrases and uplifting quotes on the small pieces of paper. The notes were collected by Student Council members, who hung them up together to create the Positive Post-It Wall. Each grade received a different color to symbolize participation in the initiative from grades K-6. On Positive Post-It Day, students gave notes to each other to recognize friendships and celebrate acts of kindness. Everyone wrote a positive note for a classmate at

McKenna Elementary School. The notes with simple messages such as “Smile,” “Be Happy” and “Believe in Yourself” were placed on each student’s locker, so by the end of the week the hallways were lined with messages of encouragement. “You want to make people feel good, so they don’t give up on themselves,” said McKenna third-grader Jacob Ghaly. Added Unqua fifthgrader Nicholas Hinck, “This inspires people to be nice, so school is a good environment.”

R is for Research Research projects are about learning something new, which is what librarian Renee Susman imparted on fifth-grade students at East Lake Elementary School in the Massapequa School District. After reading the book “A is for America,” students
picked a letter of the alphabet, and then selected a research topic based on that letter. The topic had to relate to a specific feature of the United States, such as a city, landmark or historical event. They had to use at least two resources for their research, including
one book and one online source. “Research is about looking for new information,” Ms. Susman said. “Everything we do in the library is helping to build lifelong learning skills.”

Using Zoom In, teacher Kim Kelly found a unique way to introduce a multidisciplinary lesson to her first-grade students at Birch Lane Elementary School in the Massapequa School District. On the SmartBoard, Ms. Kelly showed her students a portion of a photo and asked them to write down
their observations. She slowly revealed more of the picture until the children saw a drawing of a bear sleeping in a cave. They soon learned they would be reading the book “Hibernation.” The children received copies of the story and got together with their reading partners. They followed

up by using PebbleGo on Chromebooks, a database for early elementary students, to answer any questions that emerged during their reading. The lesson combined literacy and science while teaching students to become inquisitive readers and helping them develop their research skills.
A clean environment is necessary to maintain safe drinking water, fourthgraders recently learned at McKenna Elementary School in the Massapequa School District. The students worked with the North Shore Land Alliance Program to understand about the sources of Long Island’s drinking water. Through a two-day lesson, children learned about the aquifer
and its connection to the streams, bays and Long Island Sound. They found out how their activities can affect the quality and quantity of this precious resource. “It is particularly important that people understand the benefits of and timely need to preserve and protect our lands and waters,” said Karen Mossey, a representative from the program. “Without
natural, undeveloped areas, our community wouldn’t have the ability to recharge underground aquifers so critical to the quality and quantity of our drinking water.” This hands-on lesson, arranged by teacher Nicole Dizdar, integrated science into the fourth-grade social studies curriculum, which focuses on Long Island’s history and geography.
