100 Days Smarter The 100th day of the school year was a milestone celebrated in elementary classrooms throughout the Massapequa School District on February 14th. Students participated in various literacy, math, art and physical activities. At McKenna Elementary School, children rotated through different centers. Kindergartners did 10 sets of 10 different exercises, colored paper snakes that were 100 inches long and stacked 100 plastic cups. Each student was

also given a snack that looked like “100” - a pretzel stick and two cookies. First-graders customized their own T-shirts and wore special crowns. They also counted how many times they could perform certain tasks in 100 seconds, like clapping their hands and saying the alphabet. East Lake Elementary School’s first-graders did 100 exercises, rolled dice to get to 100 and created gumball machines by making colored dots on paper plates in five sets of 20. The children listened to

the story, “The 100th Day of School,” then drew pictures and wrote sentences about the best part of the school year so far. Second-grade teacher Christine Marshall had her students participate in 100 minutes of reading. Children rotated through different literacy centers including independent, partner and group reading, sight word beanbag toss, Valentine’s Day reader’s theater and Chromebook activities.

with Jamie Lynn Ryan When I graduated from high school, I was given the noted Dr. Seuss book, “Oh, the Places You’ll Go,” as a symbolic gesture of good luck toward any and all future pursuits. I since came to learn that this particular gift has been somewhat of a tradition for those moving onward and upward in life - no matter the age. Of course, the places outlined in the magical land of Seuss are not so much literal; but, rather, a figurative representation of the adventures which await those on the brink of adulthood, the endless potential for exploration and the Great Places which exist just over yonder. The poem reads like a veritable how-to, designed to assist in navigating the twists and turns life is sure to reveal in the years to come. Nearly 20 years beyond this stepping stone, the words

ring just as true: “Step with care and great tact… and remember that Life’s A Great Balancing Act.” Indeed it is. I recently listened to a podcast which analyzed the age-old query of whether happiness leads to success, or vice versa. Like the chicken/ egg debate, there is of course no concrete answer; however, most research seems to suggest that happiness is the starting point from which the greatest success blossoms. To be in a positive state is to have a productive, constructive mindset, making growth that much easier. Delving deeper into the topic, it was stated that those who attempt to find that tedious work/life “balance” are often misdirected in their goal. In reality, these elements will never truly exist in the perfect proportion we strive for, as our existence - and all the elements which affect

it - are in a continuous state of flux. Rather, the objective should be to find a place of fulfillment within, making the necessary adjustments along the way as we navigate those same twists and turns predicted by Dr. Seuss all those years ago. Taking this lesson into a geographic territory, it was recently brought to my attention that the passport I obtained some five years ago is nearly halfway to its expiration date, having been used precisely once on my very first international flight - first flight anywhere, in fact - to the Emerald Isle. Where to next? The fact is, it doesn’t really matter. Anywhere will do, so long as it brings pleasure and adventure and a newfound sense of discovery.

She also discussed Chinese New Year customs and traditions. As students munched on dumplings and fortune cookies, they made paper origami dogs to celebrate the Year of the Dog on the Chinese calendar.

Mixing and Mingling

Students broke out of their lunchtime routines during Mix It Up at Lunch Day at Lockhart Elementary School in the Massapequa School Day, an initiative designed to foster new friendships. During the two-day program, students in fourth and fifth grades were randomly assigned lunch tables. Mix It Up at Lunch Day is an international campaign by Teaching Tolerance encouraging children to expand their social boundaries. The goal is to empower students to be proactive about caring, acting responsibly

and being all-embracing when it comes to their peer relations. It was spearheaded at Lockhart by social worker Kerry Rivera. On the first day, children picked colored pom poms from a bag and sat at the table with the corresponding color. Prompted by conversation question cards, they participated in discussions to learn more about each other. Students picked colors again on the second day, and this time played games such as tic-tactoe, word searches and crossword puzzles while working together.

Ms. Rivera said that students completed an online survey after the two days and the response was overwhelmingly positive. Most students stated that they had learned something new about those they sat next to and that most spoke to people outside their normal friend group. “The purpose of this was for the students to form new connections with their peers,” she said. “It was great to watch them engage with each other and most everyone thought it was a great experience.”

Science Simulations After studying natural disasters, fourth-graders in the magnet program at McKenna Elementary School in the Massapequa School District created their own simulations. The students recently presented their projects to their families. Under the direction of teacher Michelle Scott, children learned about natural disasters such as hurricanes, tsunamis, blizzards and volcanoes. They analyzed data and learned about the short-

and long-term impacts these events have had on communities throughout the world. The students worked in groups and created simulations using recycled materials. They also had to follow the engineering design process to up with solutions to prevent damage to buildings and homes, and help save lives. Brayden Morris and Emmalee Edwards, who studied blizzards, built two small houses and put giant ice cubes on each. They

used salt to melt one and a heat lamp to melt the other. The girls weighed each ice cube before and after the experiment to see which method was most effective. Students said they enjoyed the hands-on exploration and learned a lot by being able to recreate the scenarios. Ms. Scott added that the project gave students skills that they can use in any career, such as problemsolving, teamwork and public speaking.

(CP Nassau) 14th Annual Polar Bear Plunge. The highly-anticipated benefit fundraiser features hearty and caring participants, affectionately known as “Polar Bears,” taking the plunge in the chilly waters off of the Town of Oyster Bay’s Theodore Roosevelt Memorial Park, Beach and Marina in Oyster Bay. The festivities kick off at 1pm

with the polar bears taking the plunge at 2 p.m. Supervisor Joseph Saladino stated, “The Polar Bear Plunge is a unique charity event, and the Town of Oyster Bay is delighted to host the plunge at Theodore Roosevelt Memorial Park, Beach and Marina. Residents are welcome to participate, have fun and plunge into the cold while warming their heart through this charitable fundraising event.” The day’s festivities will include music, complimentary hot chocolate, coffee, tea, hot dogs, soup from local Oyster Bay establishments, raffles and other surprises. An indoor assembly area will also be available for the event, which will be held rain, snow or shine.

The day’s proceedings will benefit the more than 1,500 children and adults with disabilities who participate in programs and receive services through CP Nassau, which has been assisting individuals with disabilities since 1948. Councilwoman Michele Johnson stated, “This great program features brave souls taking the plunge into Oyster Bay Harbor to raise money for CP Nassau and its many outstanding programs and services. Congratulations to New York’s rising star athlete, Michael Lantino, for claiming Bronze at the 2018 U.S. Open International Championships in the High School Division! The U.S. Open is the largest international open championship in the world, bringing in athletes from around the globe. Michael competed in a tough 15-17 division comprised of 25 of

the world’s best Taekwondo athletes. He won his preliminary matches against Canada and USA fighters, and lost a tough match to a current USA National Team member from California. and Master Andrew Oh. He trains six days a week, a total of 20 hours; on top of this, he maintains an A average and is on the Principal’s Honor Roll! “Michael is a great listener and hard worker. He has the work ethic and mindset to become a champion in the near future,” says Master Andrew Oh, who coached him at the championship in Las Vegas. This is the second international medal of Michael’s career and next, he is looking forward to going to the National Team Trials. Hope Children’s Fund is an international non-profit that operates with the motto “Education Is Key.” For children in Kenya, this couldn’t be more true. Without an education and the ability to speak English, these children often lack the opportunity to rise above fetching water and cutting wood. Kevin Mann, Vice President of Hope Children’s Fund, explained, “The government in Kenya doesn’t have the resources to take care of the children in their country like the United States government does.” It is not shocking to see a very young child in Kenya hopelessly wandering the streets without family...hungry and just trying to survive. Hope Children’s Fund does something about this problem. In 2001, Hope Children’s Fund registered as a nonprofit and raised $40,000 through donations – precisely enough money to begin construction on an orphanage that stands high up on a hill in Meru, Kenya. By 2005, the orphanage opened and began transforming lives for children, many of whom had lost their parents in the AIDS epidemic. This orphanage, Jerusha Mwiraria Hope Children’s Fund Home, has a dining hall and a dormitory for boys and girls. It provides the children with shelter, steady meals and the opportunity to attend school. The children are shown family values and given chores to complete in order for them to gain life skills. They currently house 100 children and have had many success stories. If you would like to be part of another one of their success stories, you can! There are 22 orphans who still need to be sponsored through Hope Children’s Fund’s sponsorship program - $1/day or $365/year will help send these children to school so they have a better chance

Food can be used to fend off the flu. Common foods that many people already have in their pantries can be powerful flu-fighters. Garlic, for example, contains compounds that have direct antiviral effects and may help destroy the flu before it affects the body. Raw garlic is best. In addition to garlic, citrus fruits, ginger, yogurt and dark leafy greens can boost immunity and fight the flu, according to Mother Nature’s Network. The British Journal of Nutrition notes that dark chocolate supports T-helper cells, which increase the immune system’s ability to defend against infection. A study published in the American Journal of Therapeutics showed that carnosine, a compound found in chicken soup, can help strengthen the body’s immune system and help fight off the flu in its early stages.

Flu shot and medications Annual flu shots administered in advance of flu season can help protect people and their families from getting the flu. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration says that, in select situations, antiviral medications — which are usually prescribed to treat the flu and lessen symptoms — can reduce the chance of illness in people exposed to influenza. Many over-the-counter medicines can alleviate symptoms of the flu, but cannot fend it off. Stop germ proliferation Germs can be spread easily between persons through direct contact and indirect contact with surfaces sick individuals have touched. Doctors recommend staying home for at least 24 hours after a flu-induced fever has dissipated. Well individuals should avoid contact with sick people. Frequent hand-washing with soap and water can stop germs from spreading. When soap and water is not available, alcohol-based hand sanitizers can help. People also should avoid touching their eyes, noses and mouths after being in public places or around someone who is ill. Rest and restore Those who feel symptoms coming on should begin drinking more liquids to keep the respiratory system hydrated and make mucus less viscous. Remember to get adequate sleep, as a tired body cannot effectively fight the flu virus. People of all ages should take steps to protect themselves from the flu.

For decades, people have done what they can to avoid these unseemly organisms, thinking that exposure to germs is the single-best way to get and remain sick. Certainly, there are germs that a person would be wise to avoid. However, not all germs must be avoided. Germs are tiny organisms that can enter the body through open cuts, the mouth, the nose and the eyes. Germs are found all over the world. The four main types of germs include bacteria, viruses, fungi and protozoa. Bacteria are a type of germ that often get a bad rap but actually may have beneﬁts that outweigh their negatives.

Bacteria are tiny, one-celled creatures that get nutrients from their environments to live. In some instances, that environment is the human body. Bacteria can reproduce inside and outside of the body. While bacteria that cause repeated infections might be considered bad, there actually are a host of good bacteria. Such bacteria help people digest food and protect against gastrointestinal upset,

such as diarrhea. Some bacteria may help people fight off illnesses caused by other bacteria or viruses, says research published in the journal Best Practice & Research Clinical Gastroenterology. Beneficial bacteria may help stimulate the immune system so that the body is better able to fight off diseases naturally. People frequently overlook good bacteria in an effort to eradicate bad bacteria, and that can have serious detriments. Unfortunately, the “antibacterial” products available for cleaning and medicines used for treating bacterial illnesses do not discriminate between good and bad germs. They simply eradicate them all. Heathline says that this can create an imbalance of bacteria in the body that may lead to harmful bacteria taking over. Harmful bacteria also may evolve to resist common treatments because of the overuse of antibacterial and antimicrobial medicines and products. The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention says that antimicrobial agents have been used for the last 70 years to treat patients with infectious diseases.

Although they’ve helped treat illnesses, these drugs have enabled the organisms they’re meant to destroy to adapt to them, making the drugs less effective. Some bacteria are even resistant to certain antibacterial drugs. The CDC says each year in the United States at least two million people become infected with bacteria that are resistant to antibiotics — with at least 23,000 people dying as a result of these infections. Various medical sources urge that regular handwashing with plain soap is enough for cleansing. Consuming foods with naturally occurring helpful organisms, such as yogurt, chocolate, feta cheese, pickles and dark chocolate, can help increase the levels of good bacteria in the body. Taking a probiotic supplement also may help, although researchers at the Cleveland Clinic report that there is not enough proof to say for sure. People should speak with their doctors before taking probiotics or other steps to increase bacteria to make sure they are a wise decision for each individual.

Those who ﬁnd themselves routinely battling muscle soreness can employ the following tactics to feel better and enjoy the fruits of their labors in the gym:

Listen to your body. Daily exercise can greatly beneﬁt long-term health, but it’s important that men and women listen to their bodies, paying attention to any signs that it might be time for a break. The American College of Sports Medicine notes that any type of activity that places unaccustomed loads on muscle may lead to DOMS, but activities such as strength training exercises, walking down hills, jogging, step aerobics and jumping are known examples of contributors to DOMS. Such activities should not necessarily be avoided, but it’s important that men and women not push themselves to the point of overexertion when performing them. Stay hydrated. Muscle soreness may appear if men and women are not drinking enough water before, during or after their workouts. A dehydrated body’s muscles do not have enough electrolytes, and that can be contributing to the feelings of soreness some exercise enthusiasts feel. Drink lots of water throughout the day, and don’t forget to bring a water bottle along to the gym when working out. Muscle soreness can be painful and difﬁcult to deal with. But the solution to address such soreness is oftentimes very simple.

When undiagnosed, PAD can lead to further complications, including increased risk for heart attack, stroke and coronary artery disease. Even amputation of a limb may be necessary. However, PAD is preventable when taking a few steps to improve diet. According to new research published by the American Heart Association, eating more fruits and vegetables may reduce the risk of developing PAD, which affects an estimated 8.5 million people

in the United States alone. Researchers examined dietary data from roughly 3.7 million men and women, with an average age of 65. Approximately 6.3 percent of the subjects had PAD, and 29.2 percent indicated they ate three or more servings of fruits and vegetables each day. The discovery was those who reported eating three or more daily servings of fruits and vegetables had an 18 percent lower risk of PAD than those who reported eating less of these foods. The association between fruit and vegetable consumption and lower PAD risk remained even after accounting for age, gender, race, smoking status and various cardiovascular risk factors. Saturated fats, trans-fats and sodium can contribute to the formation of plaques that lead to PAD. Replacing these foods with more vegetables and fruits that are naturally lower in saturated fats can help, as can increasing dietary ﬁber consumption. One way to incorporate these types of foods is to adhere to a Mediterranean diet, which offers high proportions of legumes, fruits, vegetables; moderate amounts of ﬁsh and dairy; and limited meat and meat products. Peripheral artery disease can be a warning sign of cardiovascular trouble. Altering one’s diet may help naturally prevent or treat this condition.

Plastic bottles and newspapers are common items that people recycle, but second-graders at Unqua Elementary School in the Massapequa School District are taking the concept to the next level. Students in Ashley Salerno’s and Valerie Sandora’s classes, with help from student-

teacher Jennifer Schuler, are leading a push to recycle old markers. They have joined forces with the Crayola company’s ColorCycle program to collect markers that no longer work. The secondgraders made posters to encourage their Unqua peers to donate to the drive.

The markers will eventually be shipped to Crayola to be recycled and repurposed. The goal of the initiative is to teach children, through an innovative and kidfriendly activity, that their efforts can go a long way in helping to protect the environment.

Kindergartners at East Lake Elementary School in the Massapequa School District recently celebrated the Chinese New Year by making paper lanterns. The activity was led by

library media specialists Claire Mitchell and Renee Susman. They taught children about history of Chinese New Year as well as the traditions and customs, before students

Amy Curry, a sixth-grade teacher at Berner Middle School in the Massapequa School District, has been chosen to receive the Outstanding Social Studies Elementary Classroom Teacher Award by the New York State Council for the Social Studies. Ms. Curry, the daughter of a former Massapequa teacher, has worked in the district for two decades and presently teaches English language arts and social studies. Prior to coming to Berner for the 2017-2018 school year, she taught several grades at Unqua Elementary School, including sixth grade, for the past 15 years. “It is always an honor to be recognized for the work you do,” she said. “So many people in Massapequa School District, during my 20 years of teaching, have helped and influenced my teaching in their own special ways. I work

with a diverse group of talented, creative and hardworking individuals.” She was nominated by Brian Dowd, a retired Massapequa and former curriculum associate for social studies. The statewide recognition acknowledges Ms. Curry’s strong grasp of the sixthgrade social studies curriculum, which focuses on ancient civilizations. She said that the topic lends itself to fun and engaging lessons and she takes pride in allowing students to learn through hands-on activities. During the study of India, she incorporates meditation and yoga. As a teacher, Ms. Curry said her favorite moment is “the look you see on a child’s face when you know you have captured their attention and you see a student invested, captivated and eager to learn more.”

She received the Margaret Simon Award for Excellence in Elementary Social Studies Education by the Long Island Council for the Social Studies in 2015. Ms. Curry was also contributing author to the book, “Growing a Growth Mindset,” by Kevin Sheehan and Jessica Ryan. Ms. Curry will receive the award at the NYSCSS luncheon on March 8th in Albany.
