Girls on the Run is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization. They run a physical activity-based positive youth development program that is designed to enhance girls’ social, psychological and physical skills and behaviors to help them successfully navigate life experiences.

They serve girls in grades 3-5 and inspire them to be joyful, healthy and confident by using a fun, interactive curriculum, which creatively integrates running! Meeting twice a week in small teams for a 10-week season, a volunteer coach will teach girls life skills through engaging lessons and fun movement activities. At each season’s conclusion, all girls from teams across Long Island will meet up for a celebratory 5K running event. This organization also runs a program called Heart & Sole. This is their middle school program that meets the unique needs of girls in 6th-8th grade. Heart & Sole takes girls as a whole into consideration body, brain, heart, spirit and social connection - in a positive and structured space, where participants can learn about themselves, explore new ideas, cultivate empathy and stregthen connections. Running is incorporated into each lesson to encourage physical wellness. These girls also prepare for a celebratory 5K event at the end of the program. The upcoming spring season

for both programs will begin the week of March 16th and is shaping up to be their largest season yet! How you can get involved: If you or someone you know would like to register for their spring program, you can! Registration is now open and runs through February 27th. Senior Earns Service Award For Animal Right Activism A devoted animal rights activist, Massapequa High School senior Daniel Balsamo was recently presented with the 2020 President’s Volunteer Service Award for his dedication to the cause. The award is a state-level honor through the Prudential Spirit of Community Awards program which recognizes Americans of all ages who have volunteers significant amounts of their time to serve their communities and country. Daniel, who regularly attends animal rights events

and rallies in New York City, recently started his non-profit organization, Liberation NYC. His organization is preparing for its inaugural conference in April, which is expected to draw 300 to 400 people and will include guest speakers and educational workshops. He said that goal is to educate people about animal rights. Animal rights has been an important issue for Daniel for several years, and he is particularly concerned about the treatment of animals within in the agricultural

system. He first got involved with Anonymous for the Voice, an organization that specializes in educating the public on animal exploitation and fosters activism groups worldwide. Daniel added that his fight for animal rights comes from the heart. At Massapequa High School, he is a member of the science research program with a concentration on super conductors. He recently was accepted into NYU, which he will attend in the fall to study physics.

Polar Bear Plunge Benefit Fundraiser Sunday, March 8 Supervisor Joseph Saladino announces that the Town of Oyster Bay will serve as home to The Cerebral Palsy Association of Nassau County’s (CP Nassau) 16th Annual Polar Bear Plunge benefit fundraiser on Sunday, March 8, 2020 at Theodore Roosevelt Memorial Park, Beach and Marina in Oyster Bay, with festivities to begin at noon and the plunge at 1pm. “The Town of Oyster Bay is proud to serve as home this Polar Bear Plunge as it supports the Cerebral Palsy Association and their many outstanding programs and services. I invite everyone to come out of winter

hibernation and join us in this fun and unique plunge into north shore waters. The water may be cold, but the cause is certain to warm your heart,” said Oyster Bay Town Supervisor Joseph Saladino, who was named the Honorary Chairman of the event. The Polar Bear Plunge festivities will include a DJ, free hot chocolate, coffee, tea, hot dogs, and soup. Raffles will be offered, and children will enjoy many other surprises including Star Wars characters and a dancing Polar Bear. An indoor assembly area will also be available. All proceeds will benefit the more than 1,800 children and adults with disabilities who participate in programs and receive services through the Cerebral Palsy Association of Nassau County. Lifeguard Employment Opportunities Oyster Bay Town Councilwoman Vicki Walsh announced today that the Parks Department is accepting applications from qualified, certified individuals interested in working at North Shore beaches this upcoming summer season. “We invite responsible and experienced lifeguards who are up to the challenge of protecting our residents while working at one of our beautiful beaches to apply now for this summer season,” said Councilwoman Walsh. “Town lifeguards provide an invaluable

service and have helped save countless lives.” Town lifeguards are hired for the summer season, which runs from Memorial Day through Labor Day. Positions are available at Tappen Beach in Glen Head, Theodore Roosevelt Memorial Park in Oyster Bay, Stehli Beach in Bayville and at Centre Island Beach. “There are many benefits to working as a lifeguard at one of our beautiful beaches,” said Councilwoman Walsh. “Having a summer job as a lifeguard helps shape confidence and selfesteem while learning the

Too Much Sleep Can Be Harmful Lack of sufficient sleep is a problem for millions of people across the globe. But what about too much sleep? Though busy men and women might think it’s impossible to get too much sleep, excessive sleep is nothing to joke about. According to the National Sleep Foundation, most adults need between seven and nine hours of sleep per night (the NSF notes that a small percentage of people may need 10 hours of sleep per night). People who routinely sleep more than seven to nine hours may have an underlying health concern. For example, the NSF notes that a recent study found that routinely sleeping more than 10 hours per night can be linked to metabolic syndrome. The Mayo Clinic says metabolic syndrome refers to a cluster of conditions that occur together and increase a person’s risk for serious health issues, including heart disease, stroke and type 2 diabetes. Obesity, headache and back pain are some

additional potential side effects of excessive sleep. The Division of Sleep Medicine at Harvard Medical School notes that genetics and age are significant factors in determining the amount of sleep healthy individuals need. However, young adults should resist the notion that they need less than seven hours of sleep per night because they’re young, while older adults should similarly avoid thinking that they need more sleep simply because they’re aging. As the NSF guidelines suggest, the sweet spot for healthy adults is typically between seven and nine hours of sleep per night. A good night’s rest is an essential component of a healthy lifestyle. But adults must recognize that excessive amounts of sleep can be just as detrimental as inadequate sleep. Individuals can speak with their physicians to determine their specific sleep needs.

Cancer patients traveling far from home for treatment across Long Island and in Queens need not worry where to stay during their care due to a new partnership agreement between the American Cancer Society, Courtyard Marriott and Springhill Suites. If you’re a cancer patient and your doctor says, “Your best hope for a cure is in another town,” your first thought may be, “Where am I going to stay and how am I going to pay for it?” The American Cancer Society can help. The Society works together with hotels through its Hotel Partners Program to provide complimentary and/ or reduced rate rooms to cancer patients who need to travel out of town to receive treatment. One hotel in Jamaica, NY and another in Ronkonkoma, NY, have joined the Society’s Hotel Partners Program, providing complimentary rooms to cancer patients who must travel across Long Island for treatment.
