nqua Elementary School third graders culminated a Social Studies unit on Japan with a field trip to Shiro of Japan Restaurant in Carle Place. There, the students saw how sushi and hand rolls are made. One student from each class was given the opportunity to make his/her own hand roll and share it with their class. Random Thoughts By: Jamie Lynn Ryan As if navigating the roads this winter wasn’t hazardous enough with the snow and ice and freezing rain, we now have a new obstacle to contend with – the vast wasteland of potholes cropping up on every corner and parkway ramp. Try attempting to slow down as your headlights catch a glimpse of the crater before you, just waiting to devour a tire or two. One more time – is it spring yet? At least spring training has finally arrived, and with it the not entirely unexpected announcement
from Yankee shortstop Derek Jeter that this season will be his final year playing baseball. A class act until the end, Jeter took to his Facebook page to write a heartfelt message of thanks and appreciation to his fans, his teammates, his family and friends. He will leave the Yankees at the top of his game, a surefire first-ballot Hall of Famer with a legacy the likes of which will not be seen again. Speaking of, remember all those long lost friends you thought you would never see again? Well, thanks to social networking, virtual reunions have become fairly
common. Sure, there’s plenty of useless material to navigate through; but if you learn to utilize these sites properly, the odds of reconnecting with someone are pretty likely. Everything in moderation, right? That’s the mentality you need to adopt for spring – moderation – with diet, exercise, everything. Those bathing suits that have been cropping up in every department store? They’re not going away anytime soon. Members of Massapequa High School’s Key Club brightened up the lives of less fortunate children by donating more than 200 toys through the Long Island Head Start in Amityville. Long Island Head Start is a non-profit organization that helps families “break the cycle of poverty” by providing comprehensive child development services. The
Massapequa High School Key Club, a community service organization under Kiwanis International, works with Head Start every year to organize the trip and annual toy drive. “It’s a great opportunity for Massapequa High School to come and give presents to children, and the children love the presents,” a Head Start teacher said. Students and club
advisor Michael Draper delivered the toys in person and also spent four hours singing and playing games with the children. “It’s amazing to see the kids here get so excited over our gifts,” said Key Club President Ryan Schulte, a senior at Massapequa High School. “And the Key Clubbers are having just as much fun. It’s a beautiful experience for all.”

ECO-TEST - After learning about the 247 “superfund” cleanup sites contaminated with hazardous chemicals across Long Island, students in the Doshi STEM Program at Nassau BOCES decided to take action. The young scientists conducted testing for heavy metal contaminants in our local ecosystem including lead, arsenic and mercury. Students went out in the field to take coastal samples from Caumsett State Park, to compare with samples from a superfund site 10 miles away in Glen Cove. They prepared and tested the samples at Brookhaven National Laboratory, conducing x-ray fluorescence tests using the lab’s state-of-the-art Synchrotron Light Source. To present their findings, the students created scientific posters.

More than 900 people from across Long Island joined a “movement” on Wednesday, February 12th, by attending the hugely successful American Heart Association Go Red For Women Luncheon at The Crest Hollow Country Club in Woodbury. The American Heart Association’s Go Red For Women movement encouraged everyone in attendance to “Speak Red” to help save lives and take charge of their cardiovascular health and share the life-altering and life-saving information of the day with women they know. The 2014 American Heart Association Go Red For Women Luncheon is nationally sponsored by Macy’s and the North Shore LIJ Health System is the Cities Go Red Sponsor. The color red was everywhere from women’s dresses to men’s ties. This year’s 13th Annual Go Red For Women Luncheon honorees were Carmelina Oliveira, President, Oliveira Contracting, Inc. and Karen Murray, President, VF Sportswear. Stella Mendes, President, First National Bank of New York was chair of the luncheon and Dr. Jean Cacciabaudo, Chief of Cardiology at Southside Hospital and Dr. Stacey Rosen, V.P. Katz Institute For Women’s Health were the Medical Co-Chairs. The honorees were committed to raising support and creating awareness about heart disease and stroke especially as it pertains to women. Lauren Scala, Reporter for WNBC 4 New York was emcee. Attendees also heard Aime Salazar and Joe Nigro, heart survivors, share their experiences. Golf Course To Open Soon The Town of Oyster Bay’s Golf Course will soon be ready for another season of play. “Depending upon the weather, our outstanding facility is expected to be ready for play by March 18th,” Councilman Macagnone said. “Golf membership registration will start on Wednesday, February 26th at the golf course and there will be no fee increases for the
2014 season.” With the Town holding the line on fees, Councilman Macagnone said patrons will be treated to an outstanding experience and value. “Our members are all aware that rates at surrounding golf courses have been steadily increasing, while rates at the Town’s course will remain the same,” Councilman Macagnone said. “With
its challenging, yet very playable holes and its pastoral setting on the grounds of a former estate, the Town of Oyster Bay’s beautiful, championship golf course in Woodbury ranks among the most popular municipal courses on Long Island.” By registering, seasonal members will have the opportunity to enjoy all of the amenities that the Town of Oyster Bay’s
renowned 18-hole par 70 championship golf course has to offer. Annual membership fees, daily green fees, gas carts and tee time reservation fees will all be the same as last year. “With the cold weather months still upon us, playing a round of golf seems a long way off,” Councilman Macagnone said. “In reality, the season is right around the corner.” Fees are posted

The Town of Oyster Bay will host the large school division of the New York State Club School Hockey Tournament – sanctioned by the AAU (Amateur Athletic Union) from Friday, February 28th through Sunday March 2nd, according to Town Supervisor John Venditto. Some of the best high school teams from throughout New York State will come to the Town of Oyster Bay Ice Skating Center, located at 1001 Stewart Avenue in Bethpage, for this prestigious tournament. The admission/donation for the event will be $10 for adults for the day or $15 for the weekend. for an award, several 2013 editions of the newspaper were submitted to the association for evaluation. Entrants were provided a detailed analysis, including a breakdown of how to improve their publications. Coyle and “The Chief” staff were pleased to find that not many improvements were recommended. “This achievement was truly a collaborative effort, not only with the current staff but with staff members from the 201213 school year, including former Editor-in-Chief Joseph Zappa and former Managing Editor Jessica Crowell-Graff,” Coyle added.

Circle Of Giving
The act of giving back was experienced at its finest by one special member of our U. S. military and a teacher who encouraged her students to remember the troops. Students in Jenny Gillam’s Personal Computer Applications class at Alfred G. Berner Middle School wrote letters and sent them, along with donated items, to soldiers; a project she’s done with her students since the 9/11 attacks. While the majority of the letters were dropped off at Adopt-A-Battalion in Massapequa Park and sent to Afghanistan, the AdoptA-Battalion was also able to send some to a soldier stationed in Georgia with special ties to Berner Middle School. Army Pvt. Nicole DiGregorio, a 2008 Massapequa High School
graduate, sat in Gillam’s class and participated in this letter-writing/ care package project 10 years ago, never thinking that one day she would be the recipient of one. Overwhelmed by the students’ gesture, she visited Gillam’s class in uniform to thank the students personally just days after she made a surprise visit home. “I cried when I received the package,” Pvt. DiGregorio said. “I remember writing my letter and how I included a picture of an American flag. This project shows the appreciation others have for those who are serving the country…people who don’t even know me are thinking of me and showing they care. It made me really happy.” Pvt.
