The Babylon Breast Cancer Coalition (BBCC) was founded in 1993 by three friends who lived in Babylon. Determined to fight against breast cancer by raising awareness and educating women, the BBCC with their dedicated volunteers undertook the task of completing a demographic survey to ascertain the incidence of breast cancer in Babylon. From this, a volunteer driven grass-roots organization grew, which serves the entire Township of Babylon, including those with all gynecological cancers in addition to those with breast cancer. Today they provide direct patient services and support to help ease the burdens that breast and all gynecological cancers put on patients and their families/caregivers. In addition to assisting in the basic needs of those battling cancer, they also reach out to the community at large, providing educational programs to encourage healthier lifestyles, which would decrease the still very high instance of these cancers in our community. Please note, if you do not live in this township, you can still reach out to the BBCC to find out who in your area can be of help to you. The success of the BBCC is made possible primarily through their volunteers. This Coalition has three staff members, so volunteers are so important to them, volunteering not because they have the time, but because they have the heart to do so. Volunteering does not only benefit the cause, but it greatly benefits the person doing so as well. Focusing on others is a great way for one to heal, self-reflect and find joy. Below is a heart-felt message from Nick Radesca, a Volunteer Board Member and Treasurer at the BBCC: “I was devastated when my wife passed away in 2017 of metastatic breast cancer. The agonizing ordeal leading to her death was terrifying and exhausting - which had me at her side at doctor appointments,

c h e m o treatments, repeated lengthy emergency room visits, in her hospital rooms sleeping in a bedside chair and finally caring for her at home during hospice. I felt a deep void when my wife of 53 years was gone but I had to move on somehow, so I searched the internet for ways I might help others going through the same hardship and happened across Babylon Breast Cancer Coalition (BBCC) in need of volunteer office help. Since I was a C.P.A., I thought I’d give it a try and three years later I’m a member of BBCC’s allvolunteer Board as well as it’s Treasurer. When I remember my late wife’s dark, frightening, cancer filled days, I cringe to think there are people in this world who must go through this nightmare alone - which is not the case in the Babylon Township because residents have BBCC. Most people BBCC help do not have a devoted healthy caregiver and many are in financial distress, so the variety of free services BBCC’s staff of angels provide is an inexpressible blessing.” If you too would like to get involved with the BBCC, you can. They are looking for volunteers to assist with virtual fundraising events and social media. Additionally, you can join the BBCC for virtual bingo on February 25th at 7:15PM. How Exercise Can Help You Live Longer There are many reasons to get in shape. Weight loss is a prime motivator, as is reversing a negative health effect, such as high cholesterol or increased diabetes risk. Routine exercise also can improve life expectancy. WebMD says exercise keeps the body and brain healthy. That’s why exercise should be an important component of daily life no matter one’s age. Research published in the journal Immune Aging found that how people age is 75 percent lifestyle and only 25 percent genetics, which underscores the importance of the lifestyle choices people make. Cardiorespiratory ﬁtness Many health experts say that cardiorespiratory fitness may be just as valuable a metric to determine overall health as blood pressure and lipid levels. People with a high aerobic capacity can deliver oxygen to tissues and cells efficiently to fuel exercise, according to data published in 2014 in the journal Aging & Disease. In a study involving 11,335 women, researchers compared V02 max, also

known as aerobic capacity, in women with mortality data. Women who were fit from a cardiovascular perspective had a lower death rate from all causes, irrespective of the women’s weight. Manage stress and mood Exercise has direct stress-busting benefits that can promote longevity. The Mayo Clinic says physical activity can increase the production of endorphins, which are the body’s feel-good neurotransmitters. In addition, exercise can imitate the effects of stress, helping the body adjust its flight or fight response accordingly, and help them cope with mildly stressful situations. While engaged in exercise, people may forget about their problems as they are focused on the activity at hand. Improve bone health Strength training and physical activity can stave off the effects of frailty and osteoporosis, which affects bone strength. A study published in the Journal of Internal Medicine in 2017 found that hip fractures are associated with diminished quality

of life and survival among the elderly. One in three adults aged 50 and over dies within 12 months of suffering a hip fracture, and older adults have a five- to eight-times greater risk of dying within three months following a hip fracture. Building muscle strength, balance and bone density through exercise can reduce falls and frailty, helping to prevent fracture-related health risks. Addresses sarcopenia The health and wellness resource Healthline defines sarcopenia as the loss of muscle mass specifically related to aging. Doctors once considered this muscle loss inevitable, and it can affect stamina and lead to weakness. However, new indications suggest that exercise is the main treatment regimen for sarcopenia, particularly resistance training. This is designed to improve muscle strength and help balance hormone levels by turning protein into energy for older adults. These are just some of the ways exercise can help older adults live longer, healthier lives.

Town Launches ‘Surprise’ Recognition Program for Random Acts of Kindness

Extremely Cold Temperatures Can Cause Serious Problems For Your Pets Extremely cold temperatures can cause serious problems for your pets who are outside even for short periods of time. Most pets are not bred to withstand temperatures below freezing, and even those that are if not acclimated to the cold are at risk. When is it too cold? A good rule of thumb is, if its too cold for you to be outside without a coat, it’s also too cold for your pet. Below are some things to keep in mind regarding the safety of your pet: Never leave your dog unattended in a car. Cars turn into freezers very quickly. Never warm your car up in the garage, this can trap carbon monoxide and kill people and pets in minutes.

Make sure your pet has a collar with identification. Snow can be disorienting for an animal and it is easy for them to get lost. Keep space heaters away from where animals can get to them. They provide a risk for the animal to get burned and for them to be knocked over, causing a fire. Dogs and cats can quickly experience frostbite (especially ears and paws) and hypothermia. Symptoms of hypothermia include Severe lethargy, decreased appetite, decreased responsiveness, low body temperature, discolored skin – especially red or black extremities. If you have chickens,

especially those with longer beards or combs, they are also susceptible to frostbite and hypothermia. Please use insulated walls and chicken coop heaters. If you use ice melt on your driveway or walkway, this can be extremely painful for dogs who walk through it. If your dog has walked on it, immediately wipe you their paws with luke warm water after. Please note, a good alternative is pet friendly ice melt! Also, pet boots can be great way to keep your dog safe. Lastly, bang on the hood of your car and check for cats who may have climbed under your car for warmth.

Dented cans have long been a source of confusion and concern for shoppers. They may be discounted and seem like a good deal, but some of those dented cans may not be safe to eat. Damaged cans may be harboring food that contains botulism and other toxins. According to the United States Department of Agriculture Food Safety and Inspection Services, if a can of food has a small dent but is otherwise in good shape, the food should be safe to eat. However, deeply dented cans should be discarded. Dented cans of food that are safe will have smooth dents or dents that are not on the seams of the can. A person should avoid sharp dents, dents in the seam and dents where the seam and the can meet. In addition, if the can is bulging or swollen, it should be avoided. Dents in a seam can let in air and bacteria. Deep dents may have left pinholes, again where bacteria can enter.

Massapequa Takes Action Coalition (MTAC) and Partners “Take Back” the Massapequa Preserve The Massapequa Preserve is widely used by community residents and youth as a place to enjoy the natural beauty of our town especially during Covid-19. Unfortunately, we have discovered that sometimes the Preserve is not used in a positive way. With the help of a local parent, Massapequa Takes Action Coalition (MTAC) was informed that youth and young adults have been loitering in the park after hours, engaging in risky behaviors and building structures in remote areas of the Preserve. Working with its partners, the Nassau County Police Department, Nassau County Department of Parks and Recreation and the New York National Guard Counterdrug Task Force, MTAC has removed the structures to discourage use of the park after hours and illegal use of substances in the Preserve. Since the collaboration, Problem Oriented Policing (POP) officers have increased their patrol of the Massapequa Preserve to show more law enforcement presence and deter youth from being in the Preserve after hours. Recently, the POP officers have been involved in taking down another structure in one of the “chronic” areas of the Preserve. The National Guard’s recent environmental scans have found evidence of

alcohol and drug use in the Preserve. Testing of the drug paraphernalia found in the Preserve has confirmed use of the drug THC, cocaine, heroin, ephedrine and methamphetamine. The New York National Guard will continue to conduct environmental scans of the Massapequa Preserve to document if any additional signs of drinking or drug use are present especially in the area known as “chronic” where it is evident that youth and young adults engage in risky behaviors. “Increasing patrols in the Massapequa Preserve shows our youth and residents that we will not accept illegal activities in our parks. If you see something, say something. All residents are encouraged to call the 7th precinct at (516) 5736700 to report suspicious activity in the Preserve,” stated the POP officer. “The National Guard supports coalitions across Long Island and will continue to support MTAC in their mission of reducing youth substance use. By reducing “hotspot” areas like the “chronic” area in the Preserve we can ensure our parks are a safe place for people to enjoy,” added Technical Sergeant Carissa Siry of the New York national Guard Counterdrug Task Force. “The Massapequa Preserve is a great place

to walk, bike, jog, fish, and enjoy the outdoors” said Nassau County Legislator James Kennedy (R, Massapequa) adding, “This partnership will help to ensure the preserve continues to be the pristine area Nassau residents have come to expect, and the area remains safe for everyone to enjoy.” “We encourage parents to continue talking with their teens and young adults regarding the dangers of underage drinking and substance use. Working together the community can ensure a healthy and safe Massapequa,” noted Dr. Thomas Fasano, Assistant Superintendent, Curriculum & Instruction of Massapequa Public Schools. “MTAC has a long history of working with residents and law enforcement. This relationship allows residents to have a voice and work along with organizations like MTAC to better their community. Our goal is to work together to “take back” the Preserve and create a safe environment for youth and residents to enjoy,” reported Mark Wenzel, Co-Chair of MTAC and Assistant Director of YES Community Counseling Center. After learning about the art of letter writing, second graders in Meggin Hall’s class at East Lake Elementary School in the Massapequa School District put their new skills into practice. They did so by writing letters to the men and women who have served in the United States military.

Ms. Hall’s students made cards for the Valentines for Veterans program, an annual tradition at East Lake. The children were eager to show their appreciation for veterans by writing personalized messages. They thanked veterans for their service, sacrifice and commitment to their country.

The heart shaped cards featured a colorful starsand-stripes image on the front and their handwritten letters on the back. Students also included a poem. The cards were sent to the office of Nassau County Executive Laura Curran to be distributed to veterans.

Environmental Poster Contest for 4th and 5th Graders Students should submit a poster to communicate awareness of how items of plastic litter harm our waterways by illustrating the problem of floatables in our waterways. Submissions should be made on large poster paper, with the top three winning posters to be displayed at a Town facility and showcased in a future Town of Oyster Bay Environmental Newsletter. “This contest is being cosponsored by The Waterfront Center and Friends of the Bay to help further protect and preserve the environment. Both of these nonprofit organizations have been a huge asset in helping to protect and preserve our waterways,” said Councilman Imbroto. “I encourage all 4th and 5th grade students in the Town to participate in this program, as it offers an opportunity not only to win amazing prizes, but also an opportunity to become more

educated on the serious issue of plastic pollution in our waterways.” Prizes will be awarded for the top three submissions, with 1st Place receiving a private tour of Oyster Bay Harbor aboard a Friends of the Bay vessel, $200 gift certificate for the Waterfront Center in Oyster Bay, a nautical trivia game, and Friends of the Bay apparel. The Importance Of Rest Regular exercise has been linked to a host of health benefits. People who exercise regularly can lower their risk for chronic diseases like heart disease and diabetes, and routine exercise can improve mood and potentially delay the onset of cognitive decline. As vital as physical activity is to a healthy lifestyle, there is such a thing as too much exercise. According to the U.S. National Library of Medicine, rest is an important part

of training. Without ample rest, the body does not have time to recover before the next workout. That lack of rest not only adversely affects performance, but also increases a person’s risk for health problems, including injuries that can sideline athletes for lengthy periods of time. Committed athletes may have a hard time recognizing when they are pushing themselves too hard, and the line between perseverance and overdoing it can be thin. Many athletes credit their ability to push themselves mentally and physically with helping them

achieve their fitness goals and thrive as competitors. But it’s vital that athletes learn to recognize the signs that suggest they’re

exercising too much. The USNLM notes that the following are some signs of overdoing it with an exercise routine.

• An inability to perform at your established level • Requiring longer periods of rest between workout sessions • Feeling tired • Feeling depressed • Experiencing mood swings or irritability • Difficulty sleeping • Feeling sore muscles or heavy limbs • Suffering overuse injuries such as runner’s knee, achilles tendinitis, shin splints, and plantar fasciitis • Loss of motivation • Getting more colds • Unintended weight loss • Feelings of anxiety The USNLM urges anyone experiencing these symptoms to rest

completely for between one and two weeks. After that period of rest, the body should be fully recovered. However, if any of these issues linger after two weeks, seek the advice of a health care provider. A health care provider may recommend additional rest and/ or conduct a series of tests to determine if an underlying issue is causing any of the aforementioned symptoms. Rest is as vital to an effective exercise regimen as proper technique, ensuring the body has ample time to recover and reducing the risk of overuse injuries.

Residents Encouraged to Donate Blood To help hospitals meet the ongoing and pressing need for blood during the coronavirus pandemic, Oyster Bay Town Councilwoman Michele Johnson and Councilman Tom Hand remind residents that a Blood Collection Drive will take place on Monday, March 15th from 1pm to 7pm at the Hicksville Athletic Center, located at 167 S. Broadway in Hicksville.

All donors will receive ‘Free Blizzards’ vouchers for Dairy Queen, which can be redeemed at their Massapequa, Levittown, Huntington or East Northport locations. Councilwoman Johnson stated, “You can save lives by donating blood this March at the Hicksville Athletic Center. Blood supplies have dwindled during this COVID-19 health

pandemic and are critically needed for local hospitals to meet the demand and continue saving lives. Please consider participating in this blood drive on March 15th.” Appointments are preferred for the Town’s Blood Drive. Social distancing and sanitary protocols will be in place to maintain the health and safety of all donors.

To qualify as a blood donor, a person must between the ages of 17 and 75 years old (16 with parental permission and 76 or older with a doctor’s note), weigh at least 110 pounds and not have donated blood within the last 56 days. Anyone who received a tattoo within the past 12 months is ineligible to donate. It is recommended that volunteers eat well (low

fat) and drink fluids in the days before the Blood Drive. Councilman Hand added, “It’s quick, easy, and safe to donate a single pint of blood which can save up to three lives. If you have family members or friends willing to donate, please ask them to support our effort this year, as this initiative is more vital than ever to help make sure that our

local hospitals can meet the excessive demand during the coronavirus pandemic and continue to save the lives of as many people as possible.” For additional information regarding the Town’s Blood Drive, contact the Town Board Office at (516) 624-6380.
