Signs of Spring By: Jamie Lynn Ryan
And just like that, the snow has melted and signs of spring have begun to sprout here and there, signaling the end of hibernation and the beginning of so many wonderful things in this second season of the year. Of course, we are not completely out of the frozen woods yet; but it certainly is nice to feel the warmth of the sun in the month of February nonetheless. Last year, March brought with it a robin’s nest, complete with four perfect blue eggs, to my grandparents’ house. I often wonder if one of the babies will return this spring to lay its own batch of eggs and continue the line of fuzzy birds born in that backyard. So many wonderful memories took place in that very spot… how fitting that new life
should be born there as well. I recently picked up a bunch of tulips and roses while shopping, deciding that the post-holiday season barrenness of my apartment could use a little splash of color to liven things up. It’s amazing what a bowl of flowers can do to improve the atmosphere of a room… how I do love to snip and arrange fresh blooms in vases on occasion. It’s times like these that I wish I had a real garden of my own to tend; but alas, decks are really only conducive to the standard potted plant. I am certainly looking forward to heading out this spring and exploring the beaches and parks of Long Island as they come back to life. Aside from the exercise these random, meandering strolls encourage, they
also give me the alwayswelcome opportunity to continue to explore my love of photography. It doesn’t matter how many times I have visited a particular place; there is always a new angle to be found, another pretty sight to document. In about a month’s time, my hope is to have my new website up and ready to launch, featuring some of these scenic snapshots from the last several years, perhaps with some prints and calendars available for purchase. In the interim, I have created a public Instagram account, so please feel free to “follow” me @jlynnspj, take a look around and stay tuned for the official launch of my site, www. SnapshotsAndSilhouettes.com. Springtime is the season of beginnings – no harm in getting a head start!

Through the Writer’s Workshop initiative, students in Jen Emberley’s class became authors and illustrators by creating their own picture books. They started out by reading a lot of pictures books, such as “Fire Engines” and “Love, Ruby Valentine,” which served as mentor texts. The children learned about the importance of

Students didn’t have to travel very far to see the Grand Canyon, Mississippi River or Mount Everest, as third-graders in Richard Hludzinski’s class at Fairfield Elementary School in the Massapequa School District completed a world geography project. Each student had to
pick a specific landform or water form from the world and create a picture or three-dimensional model. Choices included islands, mountains, volcanoes, oceans and straits, ranging from spots in New York state to locations on the other side of the earth. The third-grade social
studies curriculum, Communities Around the World, includes a unit on geography. Students did research on their places, using books and online resources, and shared interesting facts with their classmates.
COMMERCE PLAZA - On Monday, February 13th, three classes from Birch Lane Elementary school visited Commerce Plaza in Levittown. The goal of Commerce Plaza is to provide Long Island students with an immersive business experience to prepared them for the real-world workforce. Many of the students arrived in business attire and ready to work for the day. Each student was assigned a job and had real work experience responsibilities. They learned things like bookkeeping, assisting customers, making deposits at the bank, purchasing furniture for their office and managing a bank account. Executing an Escape clues that would open locks, so they could get into a box and access the anti-homework love potion. If they didn’t, they would all be in love with homework, always asking their teachers for more and even doing their brothers’ and sisters’ homework. The premise was one of hundreds available from Breakout EDU, which provides the kits. Clues were hidden around the room, and students worked
in groups to decipher codes, such has having to use candy hearts to figure out a three-digit number. The activity promoted problem-solving skills while fostering communication and collaboration. “Without teamwork, it might have been impossible,” said sixthgrader Bella Chidichimo after she and her classmates “escaped.”
No-slip sleeves, a cream to repair cracked phone screens and odor-repellant cleats were just some of the concepts that fifth-graders from the Massapequa School District showcased at the fourth annual Invention Convention, held on February 7th at McKenna Elementary School. Students from the magnet program at the six elementary schools came together to present their inventions, which were months in the making. The project helped develop problem-solving skills while allowing each student to bring out his or her inner creator. They first had to come up with an idea and do research to see if it already existed. The process also included building a prototype, and doing market research within their own school to determine the product’s demand and how much it should cost. Parents were invited to see all the inventions that afternoon, and students created display boards. Michelle Locher, the magnet teacher at McKenna, said she was very impressed with the variety of ideas. She noted that some inventions were close to final products, while others are ideas that could eventually become a reality. Fairfield Elementary School student Megan Dunne invented a decoration that transforms so it could be used for Christmas or Halloween. She said the purpose of this is to save space on storage.
Kaitlyn Stella, of East Lake Elementary School, had a similar reason for coming up with her idea, Pillow Play. Pajamas can be attached to a pillow to making packing easier for vacation or a sleepover. James McAleer, of Lockhart Elementary School, designed a product called Bee Gone. It is a watch that lets people know when a bee is nearby. He said this is to help people with bee sting allergies, so they can safely enjoy the outdoors. “I learned a lot from making this,” he said. “It was a challenge. When things are going wrong, you have to put a lot more work toward it and not give up.” Unqua Elementary School students Patrick Pellegrini and Andrew Macri teamed up to build Shake Out. It is a machine with spinning bristles that help get the dirt out of shoes. There are even suction cups at the bottom to keep it in place. “With time and effort, you can make a great product,” Patrick said.

Love for Learning Valentine’s Day served as the perfect opportunity for students to improve their literacy and math skills at Fairfield Elementary School in the Massapequa School District. Children took part in a variety of activities that centered on the holiday on February 14th. Math teacher Nicole Gatto worked with third-
graders on division. The students colored in sections of a “mystery picture” based on the answers, and revealed a heart with an arrow. In Jeanne Genovese’s first-grade class, children had pictures of objects such as flowers, pencils and people, and had to measure the size of each using candy hearts, then
recorded their findings. Second-grade teacher Donna Crowley had her students make heart puzzles about books they just read. Each section of the heart was a different question about it such as “Who is the story about?” and “What lesson is the author giving me?”
