Scallop Bowl Massapequa High School’s Marine Science Club took third place at the 18th annual New York State Scallop Bowl at Stony Brook University on February 3rd. It was the team’s first podium finish. The event was part of the larger National Ocean Science Bowl, which is designed to raise awareness about the oceans and coastal resources. Massapequa’s team was led by captain and senior Hunter D’Amore, joined by seniors Connor Stearns and Kevin
Malone, and sophomore Michael Liebow. Hunter is currently an oceanography intern and plans to major in marine biology at the University of New Haven in the fall. A dozen teams took part in the New York competition. The first round featured four players per school who could buzz in to answer various questions. If a “toss up” question was answered correctly, that team received a bonus question in which all members could work together to answer. A
halftime team challenge question was extended and written. Massapequa remained in the round robin action until beaten by eventual champion Mt. Sinai High School. The third-place finish earned Massapequa a trophy and tickets to the Long Island aquarium with back stage passes. Adviser Gregory Kwas commended the four players for their hard work and preparation leading up to the competition.

The Student Council at McKenna Elementary School in the Massapequa School District recently organized a schoolwide book drive to benefit the Book Fairies, a nonprofit organization that collects reading material for people in need throughout metropolitan New York. Students and staff generously donated gently used books from January 29th through February 2nd. McKenna was able to fill 26 boxes. Student Council members, under

Polar Plunge Set Oyster Bay Town Supervisor Joseph Saladino and Councilman Louis Imbroto announced that caring Town residents will once again have the opportunity to be “Freezin’ for a Reason” and support Special Olympics New York by participating in the 5th annual Special Olympic New York Town of Oyster Bay Polar Plunge on Saturday, March 10.
The event will take place at Tobay Beach with registration starting at 9:30 a.m. and the plunge to begin at 11:30 a.m. Supervisor Saladino, who participated in last year’s event, stated, “Many of our residents are used to seeing beautiful Tobay Beach in the middle of the summer, but this event provides an enjoyable and charitable reason to begin
the beach season early this year! Participants will have an opportunity to prove their mettle and their compassion by diving into the chilly waters of Tobay Beach to raise funds for the athletes of Special Olympics New York.” Each year, Special Olympics New York Polar Plunges are held throughout the state to attract thousands of
chilled souls to engage in a fun and commendable fundraising event. All funds support Special Olympics New York’s programs and promote awareness of people living with intellectual disabilities in New York. The Career and Community Connections Class at Massapequa High School’s Ames Campus held a Super Bowl party on February 2nd. The ninth-graders learned about the game and associated traditions as part of their continual study on current events, and used technology by voting on the team they expected to win on the Smart Board. They practiced their math skills by measuring ingredients to make party snacks including English muffin pizzas, sour cream dip and macaroni and cheese. The students wore team jerseys to school and enjoyed socializing with their teachers and classmates.

Chinese New Year Craft Elementary and middle school students from the Massapequa School District recently came together to celebrate the Chinese New Year. Berner Middle School students who are taking Mandarin Chinese as their world language traveled to Birch Lane Elementary
School on February 9th. They joined the secondgraders who came together in the cafeteria to learn about the holiday and make a craft. Mandarin Chinese teacher Tiffany Fan talked to students about Chinese New Year traditions and customs. She spoke about
the Year of the Dog and showed the children how to write “Dog Year” in Mandarin. Second-graders then replicated it with assistance from their Berner peers. The older and younger students also worked together to create paper origami dogs.

to succeed. Below, you will see a photo of Ian Mugambi, a 12 year-old boy in need of a sponsor. Ian lost his mother and sister and currently resides at this orphanage in Meru. You will be able to write letters or send e-mails directly to the child to provide them with hopeful messages! Kevin and Aida often travel to visit the orphanage and welcome sponsors to come along so they can meet firsthand the child they sponsor. Growing up on Long Island, I realize it is easy to be misled into thinking everyone lives as we do, but that is not the case. Ian is much more than just someone in the photo on this page; he is one of many people across the world who is reaching out for help. Although there are plenty of ways we can spend $1 a day, using that money to mentor a child in need is truly a priceless experience!
and an opening reception was held for the artists, their teachers, families and community members on the evening of Feb. 8. “It’s a great way for the community to see all of the artwork that everyone has worked really hard to create,” said senior and National Art Honor Society President Elizabeth Schafer. Senior Gabby Doughty said this exhibit gives recognition to Massapequa’s art community and showcases
the abilities of the district’s young artists. Alex Valentine added that with pieces from elementary school through high school on display, it shows the progression of skills that students learn. The display will remain through Sunday, February 25th, in a storefront on the south end of the first floor. Thanking the Troops Elementary students throughout the Massapequa School District showed their appreciation for the men and women in the armed services by taking part in the Valentines for Veterans program. All six elementary schools participated, and the cards were sent to either the Town of Oyster
Bay, Nassau County or New York State Assembly for delivery to the troops. Children shared their gratitude through colorful cards with personal messages and well wishes. Of the thousands of cards completed, some were shaped liked hearts while others had patriotic themes. Lockhart Elementary
School Principal Stephen Scarallo said it is important to show that the country’s servicemen and women are not forgotten. Birch Lane Elementary School firstgrade teacher Gina Berland added that it had the dual purpose of teaching children to give thanks while allowing them to practice their literacy and handwriting skills.

Hope Children’s Fund is an international non-profit that operates with the motto “Education Is Key.” For children in Kenya, this couldn’t be more true. Without an education and the ability to speak English, these children often lack the opportunity to rise above fetching water and cutting wood. Kevin Mann, Vice President of Hope Children’s Fund, explained, “The government in Kenya doesn’t have the resources to take care of the children in their country like the United States government does.” It is not shocking to see a very young child in Kenya hopelessly wandering the streets without family...hungry and just trying to survive. Hope Children’s Fund does something about this problem. In 2001, Hope Children’s Fund registered as a nonprofit and raised $40,000 through donations – precisely enough money to begin construction on an orphanage that stands high up on a hill in Meru, Kenya. By 2005, the orphanage opened and began transforming lives for children, many of whom had lost their parents in the AIDS epidemic. This orphanage, Jerusha Mwiraria Hope Children’s Fund Home, has a dining hall and a dormitory for boys and girls. It provides the children with shelter, steady meals and the opportunity to attend school. The children are shown family values and given chores to complete in order for them to gain life skills. They currently house 100 children and have had many success stories. If you would like to be part of another one of their success stories, you can! There are 22 orphans who still need to be sponsored through Hope Children’s Fund’s sponsorship program - $1/day or $365/year will help send these children to school so they have a better chance
Student artists in the Massapequa School District are being celebrated for their talents with an exhibit at the Westfield Sunrise Mall. The display features paintings, drawings and three-dimensional art representing the nine schools. Each art teacher was able to submit 12 pieces. Massapequa High School students from Advanced Placement art classes and the National Art Honor Society set up the display,

Inspired by a young boy who made arcade games out of cardboard boxes, students at Birch Lane Elementary School in the Massapequa School District did just the same. Third-graders took part in the STEAM activity and the result was a room full of creative games. The students learned about Caine’s Arcade from a YouTube video before using recycled materials such as cardboard tubes, plates, cups and paper to make their own. To
prepare their minds for design thinking, students participated in a thinking routine called See-ThinkWonder in which they analyzed pictures of arcade games made by other children. This helped students visualize all the parts needed in a game and helped create expectations for the project. They then used the engineering design process to imagine, plan, create and improve their games over the course of six sessions of enrichment.
In addition to building the games, students had to make up rules. Gavin Horigan made a game in which a participant would have six tries to roll a ball down a ramp and get at least three in an empty cup. Kate Smith’s design includes using a spoon to fling a ball into a hoop. “It was amazing to see their imaginations in use and the games come to life,” said magnet and STEAM teacher Lindsay Cafiero.

Science XP Homer Simpson was the inspiration for a science experiment at Massapequa High School’s Ames Campus, in which ninth-graders studied the concept of homeostasis. Science teacher Gwen Bonn said the “Homer-ostasis” project was designed to give biology students hands-on exploration of excretion in their study of the human body. The young scientists worked
in teams to keep a leaking cup full of water while also dealing with several other variables. They had to use a mixture of hot and cold water to keep the temperature in a certain range, and add nutrients to keep it at a strong yellow color, similar to Homer Simpson. Homer’s face was drawn on the outside of each cup, and the students had to keep the water level up
to his eyes to keep him alive. They repeated the experiment several times, and each group member was assigned a specific task. “The teams that worked best together were the ones that were going to keep him alive the longest,” Ms. Bonn said. “The students learned how real scientists work.”

The students also discuss how they have transferred their foreign language skills from the classroom to real-world situations. Massapequa offers American Sign Language, French, German, Italian, Mandarin Chinese and Spanish. Junior Mikaela Ellis, who as been taking Spanish
since seventh grade, said she is considering a career teaching the language because she is interested in the exploration of other cultures. She is learning what she can do to excel as a Spanish teacher. “I’ve always wanted to be a teacher, and I’ve always been interested in the Spanish language,” she said. “It’s important in this day and age to be able to communicate with other people because not everyone speaks English.”
