Oyster Bay Town Councilwoman Vicki Walsh announced today that the Parks Department is accepting applications from qualified, certified individuals interested in working at North Shore beaches this upcoming summer season. “We invite responsible and experienced lifeguards who are up to the challenge of protecting our residents while working at one of our beautiful beaches to apply now for this summer season,” said Councilwoman Walsh. “Town lifeguards provide an invaluable service and have helped save countless lives.” Town lifeguards are hired for the summer season, which runs from Memorial Day through Labor Day. They run a physical activity-based positive youth development program that is designed to enhance girls’ social, psychological and physical skills and behaviors to help them successfully navigate life experiences.

Running is incorporated into each lesson to encourage physical wellness. These girls also prepare for a celebratory 5K event at the end of the program. The upcoming spring season

They serve girls in grades 3-5 and inspire them to be joyful, healthy and confident by using a fun, interactive curriculum, which creatively integrates running! Meeting twice a week in small teams for a 10-week season, a volunteer coach will teach girls life skills through engaging lessons and fun movement activities. At each season’s conclusion, all girls from teams across Long Island will meet up for a celebratory 5K running event.

FUNDRAISER FOR N. MASSAPEQUA FIRE DEPARTMENT - Oyster Bay Town Councilwoman Laura Maier recently hosted a fundraiser for the North Massapequa Fire Department at her local small business, Dairy Queen Grill & Chill in Massapequa. On Christmas morning, members of the North Massapequa Fire Department were awakened to a fire in their own Fire Headquarters, which ultimately devastated it, destroying four pieces of fire equipment, substantial damage to the truck bay, and smoke and water damage to the entire building. As part of the fundraiser held at Councilwoman Maier’s small business, Dairy Queen Chill & Grill in Massapequa, 25% of the proceeds for the day were donated towards supporting the department’s recovery after this devastating fire, to help them rebuild so they can continue to do the amazing job they do to keep residents safe. Councilwoman Maier was joined by countless residents who came out to support the cause throughout the day, including members of the North Massapequa Fire Department, Town Councilman Steve Labriola, Town Councilman Tom Hand, Town Councilwoman Vicki Walsh, Receiver of Taxes Jeffrey Pravato and Village of Massapequa Park Trustee Daniel Pearl.

Berner Middle School students are doing an outstanding job promoting the Massapequa School District’s upcoming World Language Festival. There were more than 120 entries in the poster design contest and the winners were announced on Feb. 5. Students designed posters based on the theme for the 16th annual event, “Languages Unite the World.” Children are invited to participate in cultural activities organized by students in language classes at Massapequa High School, and the posters are hung throughout the six elementary schools to promote the festival. The winning entry was created by seventh grader Sophia Moehringer, whose poster featured a drawing of a camera along with scenes representing the six languages offered in the district – American Sign Language, French, German, Italian, Mandarin Chinese and Spanish. Second place winner Jessica Renda, an eighth grader, drew a poster the featured a globe and ribbons formed by the flags of countries from all over the world. Eighth grader Yuvika Thapa’s design was a globe made up of puzzle pieces of flags and international landmarks. Their posters will be displayed at the festival, and they also received certificates and

Center through the Mighty Mason’s Warriors Initiative. “Their effort was randomly and kindly put together after they learned that my three-year-old son, Mason, was diagnosed with B-Cell Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia,” Councilwoman Maier added. “Mason has battled this disease like a true warrior, and before the holidays, he expressed a desire to hand out toys to his fellow warriors at Cohen Children’s Medical Center. Thanks to these kind-hearted residents, this became possible.” The Councilwoman and Councilman Lou Imbroto further recognized Plainview resident Jay Asparro, who ran 100 miles over 24 hours in November and raised nearly $100,000 for the Long Island Alzheimer’s and Dementia Center. Asparro took on the initiative in memory of his late grandmother, Ann Asparro, who died of Alzheimer’s. “Not only is this an incredible athletic accomplishment, it is also an inspirational humanitarian achievement,” said Councilman Imbroto, noting that the national ‘Random Acts of Kindness
Day’ has gained popularity in recent years as many schools, businesses and communities have joined in the initiative. “Our children are taught kindness in schools, and sometimes we adults need to be reminded that simple positive actions can go a long way,” Councilman Imbroto added. “The goal here is to create a ripple effect and inspire others. Hopefully by providing kindness to others, they will be inspired to do the same.” Looking for a simple way to spread kindness? The website randomactsofkindness.org has some great ways to get started.
