In 1924, the Woman’s Club of Massapequa was created to promote educational, social, and civic development. In its nearly 100 years it has witnessed many events, the Depression, WWII, the Korean Conflict and Vietnam War etc. Despite the difficult conditions Covid-19 presents today the club and its good works continues. While not able to hold the monthly general membership meetings, the Executive Board under the leadership of President Maureen Larisch, hold

meetings by conference call. Approximately 15 ladies have joined in these to guide the club’s movements. Del Genovese, Director of the Child Welfare Department, is in contact with houses of worship and schools in Massapequa and surrounding communities when families with children are in urgent need of assistance. This February, as during holidays, all members may participate in a food drive to benefit Our Lady of Lourdes pantry. With guidance from

Massapequa High School, a monetary award to a graduating Senior who has overcome challenges will be presented. For several years now and continuing in 2021, member Rowan Brooks will donate an additional award. Woman’s Club of Massapequa will persevere as it has for nearly a century rewarding members with civic awareness, philanthropy and social engagement. cancer treatment. Clients meet with trained exercise physiologists for one-onone personal training sessions to address their specific physical goals and issues. Gift Of Health & Inspiration (GOHI): The Gift Of Health & Inspiration program includes a free tote bag, which is designed to be a supportive companion to the newly diagnosed cancer patient. The tote bag is filled with items to assist with your mind, body and soul. The items are nurturing, organic and holistic. They are given to patients at Good Samaritan and St. Catherine’s. Scholorship Programs: The BBCC offers scholarships to Babylon Township high school seniors who have had a parent or legal guardian with a personal breast and/ or gynecological cancer history. An essay must be submitted to be in the running for a scholarship! Vision Of Hope Garden (VOHG): There is a VOHG that this coalition started that is located on the southeast corner of Babylon Town Hall in Lindenhurst. Engraved bricks can be purchased in memory or in honor of someone who has battled breast or gynecological cancer and they will be installed in this garden. Bricks are available for engraving and installation at a cost of $50 each. Additionally, the BBCC is holding an Online Psychic Night! Join others for a gallery style reading as Georgia Rose channels messages from the other side! The Babylon Breast Cancer Coalition (BBCC) was founded in 1993 by three friends who lived in Babylon. Determined to fight against breast cancer by raising awareness and educating women, the BBCC with their dedicated volunteers undertook the task of completing a demographic survey to ascertain the incidence of breast cancer in Babylon. From this, a volunteer driven grass-roots organization grew, which serves the entire Township of Babylon, including those with all gynecological cancers in addition to those with breast cancer. Today they provide direct patient services and support to help ease the burdens that breast and all gynecological cancers put on patients and their families/caregivers. In addition to assisting in the basic needs of those battling cancer, they also reach out to the community at large, providing educational programs to encourage healthier lifestyles, which would decrease the still very high instance of these cancers in our community. Please note, if you do not live in this township, you can still reach out to the BBCC to find out who in your area can be of help to you. Below is a list of all of the programs that the BBCC offers. Lend A Helping Hand (LAHH): This unique patient service program provides much needed stress relief for Babylon Township women undergoing treatment for breast cancer and all types of gynecological cancers, as well as their families confronting diagnosis and ensuing treatments, such as chemotherapy and radiation. Some of the services this program offers include house cleaning, transportation to/from medical appointments, financial assistance, child care, massage therapy, meal preparation and more. Pink & Teal Exercise Program: This exercise program is designed to help women regain flexibility, stamina and strength following breast or gynecological surgery and/or

Applebee’s Neighborhood Grill & Bar recently announced the official launch of its 5th annual Above and “BEE”yond Teacher Essay Contest, which recognizes top teachers – as nominated by their students – by rewarding them with a sponsorship check and end-of-year class party. The contest is being offered at Applebee’s restaurants in Long Island owned and operated by local franchisee Doherty Enterprises. Applebee’s will award two deserving teachers, one in Nassau County and one in Suffolk County, with a $500 sponsorship check to use toward their classroom for the upcoming 20212022 school year, along with an end-of-year party for their current class*! To nominate a teacher and enter the contest, students

must submit an essay in-person at their local Applebee’s explaining why their teacher deserves to be Applebee’s “Teacher of the Year.” As an additional incentive, students who enter an essay will also receive a free ice cream certificate** for later use. Essay submissions are limited to one per student and will be accepted at participating Applebee’s restaurants from through Sunday March 7, no later than 10pm. Winners will be announced on Monday, April 12 and end-of-year parties will be thrown before Sunday, June 27. Seniors Earn Physical Education Leadership Award Massapequa High School seniors John Reece and Alexandra Stasichin were recognized as this year’s recipients of the Nassau

Zone Outstanding Student Award, presented by the New York State Association for Health, Physical Education, Recreation and

Dance. Two students – one male and one female – were selected from every high school who best exemplify

their understanding of the New York State learning standards for health and physical education. John and Alexandra were chosen for the award by Massapequa High School’s physical education teachers because they exhibit physically active lifestyles, value healthy choices, demonstrate responsible personal and social behavior including good character, citizenship and sportsmanship, show leadership, are positive influences on their peers and value lifelong learning.

In addition to being active participants in their health and physical education classes, they also suit up as Massapequa Chiefs. John is on the baseball, basketball and volleyball teams. He and his volleyball teammates earned a Nassau County title in the fall 2019 season. Alexandra has earned AllCounty, All-Conference, All-Long Island and AllState honors as a member of the cross country, winter track and spring track teams. Alexandra said she loves

to help others, and in her physical education classes she makes connections with all of her classmates and ensures that everyone feels included. She added that it is an honor to be recognized for her leadership. Since elementary school, John has been inspired by his physical education teachers to live a fit and healthy lifestyle. He said he has followed their example in striving to be a leader in class and a good role model for his peers.

I am writing this message in my home office, and the ground is covered with snow. We were very lucky last winter with the snow-free weather that we had, but I guess that Mother Nature has other ideas for this year. The good news is that we are only forty days away from spring and longer days. I, for one, cannot wait. The January General Meeting was moved to Zoom for obvious reasons. The participants had a great time and all went well. My thanks to Robert Zabbia for setting up the Zoom codes on his account and hosting the meeting on his laptop. Our next General Meeting will be an evening meeting held on February 25, 2021 at 6:30 PM via Zoom. The Zoom link has been e-mailed out and is also posted on our website.

Reminder to all that if you have yet to pay your membership dues, please do so as soon as possible, as we are watching all expenses due to the pandemic. All revenue that comes in helps to keep our budget balanced. If you have a problem, call me at (516) 633 -1435, and we can discuss your options. We are currently looking into filing for the next round of PPP monies from the Phase 2 rollout by the federal government, and we hope for positive outcomes on that as well. Our Super Raffle drawing was held, and the big winner was Chamber member Karen Cass. She and all of the other winners were drawn at the January General Meeting, and then announced to all by e-mail. Best wishes to all who won, and kudos to Past President Patty Orzano for doing a great job organizing this raffle. Patty is very dedicated to the Chamber, and I thank her for her commitment to all that she does.

The rest of my message is dedicated to some of our Board Members who are very devoted to our Chamber. Our Third Vice President is Robin Hepworth who is the owner of Robin Joy Photography and also an assistant at the Massapequa School District. Robin is a true professional, and her photo work is very good and always looks first class. She also works on setting up the General Meetings. Robin and Karen Gawrych always do a great job scheduling our luncheons. Our Recording Secretary is Linda Rowse, and she takes all of our minutes for the Board Meetings. The minutes always look great, and she does a wonderful job. Linda is the Branch Manager for The First National Bank of Long Island on Broadway. The bank has a stellar reputation and the facility on Broadway enhances our community very much. Our Acting Treasurer is Past President Gary Slavin, and he recently stepped up to take this position after it opened up. Gary has served on all facets of the Chamber, and is currently working on the PPP Program. He is a great asset to me as the President with his wise counsel and input. Gary has been a long-time Investment and Security Advisor, and he has a stellar reputation for doing fine work with all of his clients. That is all for this month. Residents Encouraged to Donate Blood To help hospitals meet the ongoing and pressing need for blood during the coronavirus pandemic, Oyster Bay Town Councilwoman Michele Johnson and Councilman Tom Hand remind residents that a Blood Collection Drive will take place on Monday, March 15th from 1pm to 7pm at the Hicksville Athletic Center, located at 167 S. Broadway in Hicksville.

All donors will receive ‘Free Blizzards’ vouchers for Dairy Queen, which can be redeemed at their Massapequa, Levittown, Huntington or East Northport locations. Councilwoman Johnson stated, “You can save lives by donating blood this March at the Hicksville Athletic Center. Blood supplies have dwindled during this COVID-19 health

pandemic and are critically needed for local hospitals to meet the demand and continue saving lives. Please consider participating in this blood drive on March 15th.” Appointments are preferred for the Town’s Blood Drive. Social distancing and sanitary protocols will be in place to maintain the health and safety of all donors.

To qualify as a blood donor, a person must between the ages of 17 and 75 years old (16 with parental permission and 76 or older with a doctor’s note), weigh at least 110 pounds and not have donated blood within the last 56 days. Anyone who received a tattoo within the past 12 months is ineligible to donate. It is recommended that volunteers eat well (low

fat) and drink fluids in the days before the Blood Drive. Councilman Hand added, “It’s quick, easy, and safe to donate a single pint of blood which can save up to three lives. If you have family members or friends willing to donate, please ask them to support our effort this year, as this initiative is more vital than ever to help make sure that our

local hospitals can meet the excessive demand during the coronavirus pandemic and continue to save the lives of as many people as possible.” For additional information regarding the Town’s Blood Drive, contact the Town Board Office at (516) 624-6380. Lockhart Shows Its Heart And Grants Wishes A tradition that has spanned three decades at Lockhart Elementary School in the Massapequa School District continued despite the COVID-19 pandemic, with students and staff raising money for the MakeA-Wish Foundation for the

32nd consecutive year. Instead of the traditional holiday concert prior to the winter break, the school held a virtual assembly this year. A video featured speeches from Principal Dr. Michael Yannucci and Assistant Principal Louisa

Vecchione, and introduced the three children whose wishes will be fulfilled through Lockhart’s donation of $8,635. Kindergarten teacher Therese Burch talked about the school’s long involvement with Make-A-Wish.

Music remained a big part of the program, as the video featured compilations of students from the band and orchestra playing holiday songs during solo and smallgroup performances. There were also choreographed dances set to holiday music by several classes and even appearances from Lockhart’s virtual learners. Another feature of the video included all Lockhart

students holding up posters with encouraging and inspirational words such as beautiful, believe, faith, hope, kind, love and peace. Each student was photographed in front of a green screen holding his or her personalized sign. “The efforts, care and heart of our community has remained strong and committed to helping those in need of a wish,” Dr.

Yannucci said. “We celebrate the accomplishments and bravery of so many young children facing unimaginable circumstances. We also celebrate the generosity of this community, our teachers, students, staff and parents. It’s together that we have maintained this threedecade-long partnership.”
