Even though New York looks like a winter wonderland with all the snow, the Spring Season of the Long Island Junior Soccer League (LIJSL) and Eastern New York Youth Soccer Association (ENYYSA) is scheduled to begin in five weeks. Human Nature? By: Jamie Lynn Ryan Let me start off by saying, accidents happen. We all have our moments of distraction on the road. Add to that, heightened tension due to weather conditions (even if said conditions don’t happen to be a factor at the time, but we’re giving the benefit of the doubt here), and the forces of human nature, mixed with Mother Nature, sometimes create catastrophic results. Where am I going with this tangent, you ask? Just a preface to my recent run-in with a fellow motorist, is all. Well, his runin with me, to be exact. At a red light. Behind a line of about 12 other vehicles. Clearly stopped. Not moving. No ice, no slush, no nothing on the road. Getting the picture? So, obviously, you can imagine my astonishment upon glancing in my rearview mirror – as I habitually do when on the roads

– to see headlights approaching at what seemed too fast for an appropriate slowdown and stop maneuver. Sure enough, there it was, the impact, the sound of car metal crunching and cracking, along with the squeal of brakes. Lovely. Just lovely. Luckily, another one of my driving habits is to leave a bit of room between the front of my car and the one in front of mine, saving me the added inconvenience of continuing the potential chain reaction of collisions. One minor crisis averted. All of this, mind you, and the light had yet to change to green. No sooner did I get my bearings, than the driver – a young, college-aged male with a knit hat – appeared at my driver’s side window to apologize profusely and ask if I was alright. I rolled down my window, clearly angry, and said, “Yeah, I’m fine, but my car sure isn’t.” He continued to apologize and suggested we

pull out of the line of traffic and into the parking lot of an office building right alongside the road. Great idea. As I pulled off to the shoulder and continued into the agreedupon lot, the light changed. Wanting to be sure I was out of the entryway (and further harm’s way), I found a spot off to the side and waited. And waited. I watched the continuous stream of traffic drive by, with no sign of the guilty party. Gone. Took off. You must be kidding. Hence the tangent. And the anger. And the feeling that, in spite of the fact that “accidents happen” from time to time and none of us is perfect, there is no excuse for not owning up to your actions after the fact. That’s just bad karma. So, to the other driver, I hope you can live with your decision to run from your mistake. May you never have the misfortune for someone to do precisely the same thing to you.

hockey and football, the Levittown-Island Trees Youth Council has been a part of almost every child’s life in Levittown,” said Councilman Hudes. “This organization facilitates so many healthy activities for the youth in our community.” In addition to the sports leagues, the LevittownIsland Trees Youth Council also runs a popular summer recreation program in conjunction with the school district. The program serves as a great way to keep children active and occupied during the summer break and provides employment for local teenagers. The Levittown-Island Trees Youth Council also has a philanthropic arm, collecting food for local pantries and assisting organizations such as Levittown Kiwanis and the Levittown Chamber of Commerce.

Fifth graders at East Lake Elementary School got down to business at Commerce Plaza in Levittown. They participated in a unique, hands-on educational program that introduces students to the business community

in a simulated work environment. Students learned about the free enterprise system, careers, economics, citizenship and the general skills needed to function in the workforce. Students received paychecks, made bank deposits, wrote checks,

operated businesses and prepared cost sheets while thinking critically and working as a team. Fifth graders from other elementary schools in the district will also be attending Commerce Plaza to build business skills.

The Art League of Long Island welcomes Nikki Girgenti to lead its newly re-vamped Teen Portfolio Prep Summer Program. Now in its 20th year, the Art League’s highly regarded program will continue to deliver the excellent programming it is well-known for, while offering a new approach to help teens create the perfect art portfolio. The Summer Portfolio Prep Program will help students understand the importance and the dynamics involved in creating an above average art portfolio, given the competitive nature of the college admissions process. The portfolio program is geared toward supporting students as they strive to set themselves apart as artists: whether they are applying to a Bachelor of Fine Arts program, intend to submit an art supplement, or simply want to expand their body of work as they prepare for Advanced Placement or International Baccalaureate art courses in high school. In two three-week sessions students will be able to fully immerse themselves in the creative process. Students may enroll in one or both sessions of the program. Two sessions are recommended to get the maximum benefit of the program. A breadth

of subject matter and techniques will be covered during each session.Observational studies such as still life, figure drawing, portraiture; Mixed media, Watercolors, Acrylic, Printmaking, Digital Photography, Landscapes, Book Arts, Found Object Art, Sculpture, and alternative techniques are all possible subject matter. This program will also provide other unique experiences and instruction such as mock portfolio reviews, creating digital portfolios, guest speakers, and much more. Teens will benefit from high level instruction in a professional studio setting while enabling them to develop a sense of camaraderie and community with their fellow artists. Program participants will enjoy an environment that fosters creative thinking and individuality while exploring traditional and more alternative methods of art making. The program will provide group and individualized instruction and advisement, fostering the development of artworks that are unique and meaningful to the students, bringing out their own personal voice and style. Principal Scott Bersin read its inscription to the audience, which was met with resounding applause, “In honor of our alumni who gave their lives in service to our country and in grateful appreciation to our Seaford community members who have served and continue to serve our nation,” he read. The heroes were remembered with a tribute by the Honorable Terence P. Murphy,

Nassau County Court judge and a lieutenant colonel in the U.S. Army Reserve. Then, students read the names of the fallen, followed by a bell toll by retired U. S. Navy Chaplain Rev. Ronald Klose. “James Fowler… Daniel Gladding… Kenneth Vogel…Steven R. Freese…Carl Nygren… Thomas P. Peterson… James Heinbockel and John A. McNamara,” they read as the bell echoed though the silence in the room. Performances by the Seaford High School Band and Chorus rounded out the ceremony, which was followed by a special recognition for one of Seaford’s best wrestlers. Flanked by several of his former high school wrestling teammates, alumni Ron Russo, Class of 1965, was honored for his recent induction into the National Wrestling Hall of Fame.
