leader in the civil rights movement, who was featured in Spike Lee’s 1997 documentary, Four Little Girls, the story of the 1963 bombing of Birmingham’s 16th Street Baptist Church. His presentation focused on the importance of inspiring young people to take action. Dr. Hrabowski spoke to students who had been invited to the event saying: “Each of us ifthe product of our childhood experiences. Think of it…what you do right now could determine what you do in the future.” He then recounted his memories of hearing Dr.

King speak for the first time as a 12 year-old boy in Birmingham. Following the tragic bombing at the 16th Street Church, he said he was determined to join other young students in a peaceful march through the streets of Birmingham. But first, he sought his parents’ permission to march. “At first, they were against it. But the next day, my father gave his permission,” Dr. Hrabowski said. “They told me they prayed about it, but in the end, they supported me.” That support from family and community is a

cornerstone of his concept of empowering young people “On a day when we celebrate the achievements of Dr. King,” he said, “I would encourage our young people to dream big. Dream about the possibilities… decide what you want to do in life. And then, think about what it takes to reach that dream. What I took away from the [civil rights] movement was the importance of dreaming about the possibilities,” he said. “Children have an enormous capacity to think and act. That’s

Town of Oyster Bay residents are invited to Learn to Skate this spring by registering for skating lessons at the Town of Oyster Bay Ice Skating Center, located at Bethpage Community Park. “The Ice Skating Center offers skating classes for residents all throughout the year. This winter season is an ideal time for newcomers to learn how to ice skate or for veteran skaters to strengthen their abilities. Registration for Series 4 (March 5th through April 29th) is available at the rink, online (www.TheRinx.com) or by phone at 516.797.4126. The Learn to Skate program offers group skating lessons to beginners through advanced levels. Skaters are paired based on age and skill, ranging from pre-school and basic skills through advanced levels. The program is eight weeks in length with the exception of Sunday classes which are prorated for seven weeks. All classes are 30 minutes in length. For residents, the fee is $135 for the session. For non-residents the fee is

$175. The Learn to Skate schedule is: Mondays, Wednesdays & Fridays from 4:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m., Tuesdays and Thursdays 10:00 a.m. to Noon, Saturdays from 11:50 a.m. to 12:50 p.m. and Sundays from 12:15 p.m. to 12:45 p.m. There will be no classes on Sunday, March 27th in observance of Easter Sunday. Registration costs include admission into the session for which you are registered on the day of the lesson, membership in the United States Figure Skating (USFS) Basic Skills Program, USFS record book for new members, and stickers and USFS Badges upon mastering of each level. There will also be an evaluation on week seven with a recommendation for the next series. There will be no refunds or makeups and skate rental is not included in price. Helmets, gloves or mittens and warm layers are recommended for all skaters. The Rinx Skating School staff is made up of experienced and qualified professionals, governed by US Figure Skating, USA

Hockey and Professional Skaters Association. These professionals teach skaters the fundamentals of ice skating while also placing a major emphasis on having fun. Snowman Lesson Lockhart Elementary School second-graders learned the states of matter: solid, liquid, gas, with a little help from a frosty friend. Each secondgrade class was given a real snowman that melted away throughout the day in the classroom. Students made observations, measured

the water, and made predictions as to what they thought would happen. Some students really enjoyed watching the snowman change and were sad to see him go! Others were excited to write descriptive sentences as he melted before their eyes while another class of students wanted

Johnson, the current winter season presents many opportunities for photos to be taken. Many Town publications, including the recently mailed 2016 Town Calendar, feature great photos submitted by our residents. Anybody who has taken photos depicting people or places within the Town of Oyster Bay is invited to submit those photos for potential use in upcoming Town publications. The Town accepts photos throughout the year for use in various Town publications. Seasonal photos are especially encouraged, as they are used on the Town’s website and also considered for the following year’s Town

calendar, which is mailed to all residents. The Councilwoman went on to say that photos must be taken within the confines of the Town of Oyster Bay. Digital submissions are preferred, but professionally developed photos, not inkjet printouts, may also be submitted. E-mailed photos, preferably in a jpeg format, should be sent to the Town’s Public Information Office at m k a n e @ o y s t e r b a y - n y. gov. Printed photographs should be mailed to Oyster Bay Town Hall, Attention Public Information Office, Calendar Photo Submissions, 54 Audrey Avenue, Oyster Bay NY 11771. START YOUR ENGINES - Pack 776 hosted its annual Cub Scout Pinewood Derby on Friday, January 29th. The scouts are given a block of wood and have to design, paint and name their car. Jack Riley, a Webelos Scout, took 1st place with his “Highway” car! The winners of each rank will go on to race in the district derby on April 2nd. The boys did a fantastic job creating their cars and cheering their peers on. A great night was had by all.

I’m willing to go out on a limb to say that even those who would count winter as their favorite season do not enjoy driving in the snow and icy conditions it brings, especially if they live on Long Island. Just the other morning, after a surprise helping of the white stuff, I was reminded of the joys of a morning commute in about six inches of slush… The privilege of driving behind those with an aversion to cleaning off their rooftops and back windows… The honor of inching behind drivers who seem to think that to surpass 20 mph would be criminal… The thrill of testing out my brakes every car length or so, as people ahead come to a screeching halt due to…what, exactly? I couldn’t tell you.

Sure, I understand the anxiety which can come from being forced to travel in such conditions – to a degree. But when a few select drivers and their inability to, you know, drive are the cause? Well, that’s where I lose patience. I’m pretty sure they teach this stuff in driver’s ed, in defensive driving courses – or in the big old handbook known as common sense. It’s not rocket science people. #1. You need to see the road, so clean windows and mirrors are a must. #2. The rest of us need to see the road as well, so having an 18-inch clump of snow ﬂy off the back of someone’s car into your windshield… not the most conducive to aforementioned point. #3. Brakes do not respond well on wet pavement, snow or ice – so it is best to

refrain from slamming on them for no good reason. Simply letting up on the gas pedal and, oh yes, steering can work wonders. These are just a few of the more important points I encountered on my journey to work, on a 20-mile straight stretch of road with no fewer than a dozen or so drivers wreaking havoc. We’ve been fortunate this winter, but that’s not to say we have been – or will be – spared completely. A few more morning or evening rush hours like that, and we’ll all be counting down the days to spring. Maximum deposit amount is $1,000,000 per household. **Special bonus feature: A .25% simple interest rate bonus will be paid on each anniversary date of account opening on the lowest balance for that year (anniversary date to anniversary date). No bonus is paid if the account balance is less than $2,500 on the anniversary date. Additional deposits during a given anniversary period do not affect the bonus interest payment. Deposits made to the account on any anniversary date will be used to calculate the lowest account balance for the next anniversary period. The bonus interest is calculated on the lowest balance on deposit from one anniversary date to the next anniversary date. Simple interest rate bonus is subject to change at any time after first anniversary date of account opening. Hypothetical example of how bonus works: Assume an account is opened on January 12, 2016 for $50,000. A $10,000 withdrawal is made on July 12, 2016. No other withdrawals are made prior to the January 12, 2017 anniversary date. The low balance is now $40,000, so $100 in bonus interest will be paid on January 12, 2017.
