Promoting Language Three eighth-graders from Berner Middle School in the Massapequa School District were winners in a poster contest to promote the upcoming World Language Festival. Devin DiMascio received first place. Her poster featured two silhouettes of people, along with drawings of the countries representing the six languages that are taught in Massapequa - French, German, Mandarin Chinese, Spanish, Italian and American Sign
Language. “I hope to get people to come to the festival,” she said. “Breaking down barriers and communicating with people who don’t speak the same language as you, is an important thing.” Isabel Feliciano won second place. Her poster featured a picture of the globe and a notable piece of architecture from countries representing the six languages. Third-place winner Mia Tichacek also included a drawing of the
world along with three people holding hands and one word from each language. The winning posters will be displayed at the festival on March 22nd, from 7 to 8:30 p.m., at Massapequa High School. The event will include activities in classrooms, an international food court and cultural performances. Other entries in the poster contests will be hung throughout the elementary schools to promote the event.

The “Learn to Skate” program offers group skating lessons to beginners through advanced levels. Skaters are paired based on age and skill, ranging from pre-school and basic skills through advanced levels. The program is for eight weeks with the exception of Sundays. Classes are for six weeks and all classes are 30 minutes in length. For residents, the fee is $149 for the session. For nonresidents the fee is $189. The “Learn to Skate” schedule is: Mondays, Wednesdays & Fridays from 4:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m., Tuesdays & Thursdays 10:00 a.m. to Noon, Saturdays from 11:50 a.m. to 12:50 p.m. and Sundays from 12:15 p.m. to 12:45 p.m. and 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. There will be no classes on April 16th in observance of Easter Sunday. In homage to the school’s location, the north staircase is yellow for the sun and named for Sunrise Highway, and the south staircase is blue for the water and named for Merrick Road. New blue and gold signs have been added above the doors to label classrooms and offices, and are easily visible as students walk down the halls. Directional signs leading to the gymnasium, cafeteria, auditorium and other key
places have been added around the building. Hallways have been named based on character traits, such as Respect Road, Success Street and Teamwork Way, or with Massapequa-themed names such as Chiefs Court, Bison Drive and A.G. Berner Boulevard. The Shared Decision Making Team meets once a month to come up with ideas to improve the culture of the building. The members also pick the annual reading selection for Berner’s “One School, One Book” initiative. “We work with the community, the students and the staff to improve the school,” said Executive Assistant to the Principal Theresa Donohue, who heads the committee. “We try to make Berner a better place based on everyone’s feedback. We truly come together as a team.”

The Town of Oyster Bay welcomed a new Town Supervisor with the installation of Joseph S. Saladino as the 60th Supervisor of the Town of Oyster Bay. Supervisor Saladino noted he will spend the coming weeks and months working on outlining his goals for the new Town administration. “I will work to gain the faith and trust of our residents, by providing transparency and improving efficiency, as well as looking to provide affordability and fiscal integrity.” In his new role, the Supervisor will use his over 30 years of experience as a government administrator, including the last 13 serving as an Assemblyman, during which time he pushed for government reform, tax reduction, and consolidation of state government. During his years in the Assembly, Supervisor Saladino worked to deliver on-time state budgets, bring ethics reform, cut spending and worked to eliminate a
$10 billion deficit in the State budget. Additionally, Supervisor Saladino is known throughout the State for leading the charge to remediate the Grumman Navy Plume to clean up the contaminants in Long Island’s drinking water. “We will save money. We will make Town government live within its means, while continuing to deliver top notch municipal services, the kind of services Town of Oyster Bay residents have come to expect,” Supervisor Saladino said. “Working together, we can move Oyster Bay in a new direction and build a proud future, a future built on the foundation of the highest standard of ethics, strong hands-on management and rock solid fiscal practices. Recent enhancement efforts at Berner Middle School in the Massapequa School District celebrate the building’s past and present. The Shared Decision Making Team, made up of administrators, teachers, support staff, students and parents, recommended a series of embellishments to beautify the building and make it easier to navigate. In keeping with the color scheme of the Massapequa Chiefs, the third-floor hallway has been painted gold and the second-floor hallway has been painted blue. I ended last week’s column hoping that this month of February would bring with it a little more sunshine into all of our lives… While this is a nice sentiment, of course we know that life does not always work this way, and there are plenty of storm clouds to weather along the way. This just reinforces the notion that we must all take the time to appreciate the little things in life, the special moments, those people we love and the many memories we share, as we simply never know when they will become precisely that… just a faded memory among many others. After the passing of my grandfather nearly a year ago, and the subsequent sale of the
house that my grandparents had called home for more than 50 years, there was obviously much cleaning out and sorting through mementos to be done. In some ways, this was the most difficult task of all. To me, nearly everything held some sort of significance, some deep emotional attachment which evoked so many precious recollections of years gone by. Of course, these are just objects, material possessions which hardly make up for the loss of the person they are associated with. But the photographs… those are truly special. And boy, are there photographs. I, being of the slightly OCD nature, coupled with my fervent love of all things photography, volunteered to take on the initial task
of sorting through and cataloging the boxes upon boxes of albums, envelopes full of developed photos and a few dozen or so frames and collages. Several months later, I’ve barely made a dent in the process. But it doesn’t matter. There’s no rush where memories are concerned. They should be carefully recollected, and savored. Every single photograph tells a story; and every story unlocks a treasure trove of feelings and emotions – some happy, some sad, some wistful… all meaningful in their own respective ways. And winter, while it may not bring a lot of sunshine into our lives, is the perfect time to take a moment to appreciate all the memories that do.

For their biography projects, students were asked to select a person, living or dead, who they found to be inspirational. Selections included humanitarians, innovators, authors, artists and more. The students learned about different types of biographies, read mentor texts to see good examples, and discussed how to write strong introductions and conclusions. They followed this up with research, using books in the school library or online resources

Proving Its Value Speakers from the Maurer Foundation for Breast Health Education recently visited Massapequa High School’s main and Ames campuses to raise awareness about breast cancer. Breast health educators talked to students about the risk factors for breast cancer, including those that can be controlled based on lifestyle choices. They also spoke about the importance of selfexamination beginning at a young age, and noted that it is not just a disease that affects women.
The representatives from the Maurer Foundation brought in silicon models of breasts with different lumps inside. Each student received a model and learned how to use their fingers to complete a selfexam. Denise Baldinger, the district’s health education chairwoman, said the goal was to have students go home and talk with their family members about the importance of early detection. She cited an example in which a Massapequa High School junior did just that
after hearing one of the speakers in December, and it may have saved a person’s life. The student spoke with their aunt, who then completed a selfexamination and found a lump. After going to the doctor, she learned it was cancerous but was in the early stages. East Lake Elementary School in the Massapequa School District is doing its part to honor the men and women who have served in the military by participating in the Valentines for Veterans program. “One of our goals at East Lake has always been to
teach our students about our veterans who selflessly and honorably served our country to protect our freedom,” said Assistant Principal Bryan Piotrowski. “This activity serves as a great opportunity to allow our students to thank them for their service, sacrifice and commitment
to our country.” Students throughout the school made cards for veterans to send out for the upcoming holiday. Kindergartners wrote simple messages such as “You are brave” and “Thank you” following a discussion about bravery. Fourthgraders used Chromebooks to write letters, which they printed out and glued to construction paper to create cards. “This is to thank them for their service and what they’ve done for our country,” said fourthgrader Michael Snow. “It’s important for them to know many people are thankful for them.
