Facts About St. Valentine
aint Valentine is the patron saint of lovers and engaged and married couples. He also is the name behind the holiday that inspires images of red hearts and rose petals in the middle of February. Not much is actually known about St. Valentine because records are sparse. However, these facts have emerged. • St. Valentine could be one of at least three individuals who were martyred. In fact, some believe there were about a dozen St. Valentines. • Of course St. Valentine is known for presiding over lovers. However, he’s also the patron saint of epilepsy, watching over those who experience seizures associated with the disease. • Visitors to the Basilica of Santa Maria in Rome can find the flower-adorned skull of St. Valentine on display. Other parts of St. Valentine’s skeleton are on display in the Czech Republic, England, France, and Ireland. • Some people think Geoffrey Chaucer may have invented Valentine’s Day. In his “Parlement of Foules,” he speaks of a tradition of courtly love with the celebration of St. Valentine’s Day. This association became more established after Chaucer’s poem had received widespread attention.

The pickleball craze has come to Lockhart Elementary School in the Massapequa School District. Students are enjoying the fast-growing sport in
physical education classes, learning the rules and engaging in competition. Physical education teachers Joe Catalanotto and Sandra Vacirca said that the
pickleball unit is new this year for second through fifth grade students. They set up six courts in the gym, with four players per court at a time. There are neon yellow
pickleballs as well as small and large paddles. The unit began with an introduction to pickleball rules and etiquette, including how to play with

Oyster Bay Town Supervisor Joseph Saladino and the Town Board today advanced plans to acquire and forever preserve the Peninsula Golf Course in Massapequa to ensure that it remains a golf course for public use indefinitely. After learning of an eminent sale of the property to a private sector developer, the Town sought zoning changes to protect it and opened negotiations with the current owner to forever preserve this beautiful open space to prevent development of this environmentally sensitive property. The property also serves to drain flood waters in a portion of the Town that was severely impacted by Superstorm Sandy. “The Peninsula Golf Course is too beautiful, environmentally sensitive

YouthBuild participants split their time between the vocational training work site and the classroom, where they can earn their high school diploma or equivalency degree, and prepare for postsecondary training opportunities including college, apprenticeships, and employment. “I’m very proud to

Unfortunately, an agreement could not be reached. The Town continues to advocate for the need of our residents, a protected environment and for the ever-increasing demand for golf. We are now moving forward to acquire this property at a fair price, protect its environmentally sensitive nature and ensure it
remains open for public access for generations to come.” The Oyster Bay Town Board is focused on protecting this property from future development. After unsuccessful efforts to reach a purchase price with the present property owners, the Town advanced eminent domain proceedings in court last week. To ensure full transparency and resident participation, the Town Board hosted a public hearing in June 2021 for residents to provide feedback on the Town’s acquisition plans. At that hearing, there was substantial support for this acquisition from residents, environmentalists, golfers and citizens throughout the Town, including the local civic association.

Artists Have A New Creative Outlet The Art Club at McKenna Elementary School in the Massapequa School District not only gives students a chance to develop their talent, but it also allows them to make a difference through art. Melanie Sabia, McKenna’s art teacher, started the after-school club this year and the demand was high. She launched it for third graders and when 55 students signed up, she had to break in into three groups. Beginning in the fall, each group had four sessions of art club, in which students worked on drawings, paintings and school beautification projects. All projects are based on the seasons and holidays, so every group has had unique assignments. Ms. Sabia said that each session focuses on different artistic techniques along with the use of
different materials. The first group, which had its sessions in the fall, did tracings of leaves and drawings of pumpkins, in which students explored value and coloring blending with oil pastels. Since the third group is meeting in January, they did a winter hat painting with watercolor crayons, and used white paint on black or blue paper to showcase their favorite activities in the snow. Most recently, they helped decorate the school for Valentine’s Day by making paper chains with pink and red hearts. In February, Ms. Sabia will open up the art club to second graders, which will also be done in three groups as 50 students are on the list. “It’s great to have so many students excited about art,” Ms. Sabia said.
