But seriously, did we need to make up for a season’s worth of snow totals in just one day? Mother Nature sure doesn’t play around. Add to that the fact that February – statistically speaking, according to the too-gleefulfor-my-taste newscasters – is the snowiest month of all and, well, refer back to point #2 above. In lieu of that, I suppose I could at least go shovel shopping before the next big one hits.

So, one epic snowstorm/ blizzard/”Juno” (who names these things, by the way?) into the Winter of 2015, and I’ve just about had my fill. How about you? As lovely and peaceful as a blanket of freshly fallen snow looks on the landscape, unfortunately, “snow days” only last for about one day, if that. Once the plows emerge, and the salt and sand turns the pristine landscape into a mountain range of dirty, frozen boulders, the novelty wears off pretty quickly – even faster if you are the one responsible for shoveling it. This past week, after hibernating for as long as possible and savoring the

“day off,” I ventured into the great void of white, shovel and scraper in hand, and attempted to determine which mound might be my car. After wading through the untouched walkways and parking lot of my complex, it was time to begin the dreaded clearing-off-the-car process. Easier said than done. After standing on my tiptoes, vainly trying to reach the summit, I was able to push off most of the twofoot accumulation – only to have a mini-avalanche fall to either side of my car. What had been knee-deep snow was now waist-deep. Spectacular. And so it went, for hours, as I slowly made headway. Two things occurred to me during this time. #1 – I

Presidents’ Day Spotlight Millard Filmore was the 13th President of the United States, assuming the nation’s highest office when President Zachary Taylor died in office after serving a little more than a year as president. Fillmore, a Whig lawyer from western New York who served as Taylor’s Vice President, was the last American president who was not affiliated with the Democratic or Republican

parties. An early member of the Whig party, in 1851, Fillmore became the only president in American history to appoint a Whig Supreme Court Justice after his recess appointment of Benjamin Robbins Curtis was confirmed by the United States Senate in December of that year. Fillmore rose to occupy the White House after a humble upbringing in the

Finger Lakes region of New York. At 15, the future president was apprenticed to a cloth dresser but was admitted to the bar in 1823 and soon became a successful lawyer in Buffalo. Fillmore soon ventured into politics as well, using his Whig connections to run for the House of Representatives, where he served for eight years.

East Lake Elementary School students are exploring the magical benefits of reading with the Disney family as they participate in the Parents as Reading Partners (PARP) Program. For this exciting, funfilled event, students pledge to read at least 15 minutes per day with their parents in an effort to build vocabulary skills, improve

comprehension and stretch their imaginations. This year’s theme is “Remember the Magic in Reading,” which is being reinforced with a host of engaging activities over a three-week period. With prizes at stake, students try to read as much as they can with hopes of attaining the most points for their class. To kick off the event, school administrators

delighted the students by dressing up as Mickey, Goofy, Minnie and Winniethe-Pooh. They danced around and welcomed the students to school in the morning, then participated in the school’s live morning broadcast. Similar PARP campaigns are taking place in each of the elementary schools in the district.

By 1848, Fillmore was realizing even more ambitious pursuits, as he was elected to serve as Taylor’s Vice President. He would not serve long in that role, as an illness that befell President Taylor on July 4, 1850, would claim his life just five days later. That thrust Fillmore into the presidency and right into the heart of heated debate surrounding the Compromise of 1850, a package of bills that aimed to defuse tensions and confrontations between the slave states of the south and the free states of the north. Fillmore would ultimately sign all five bills in the Compromise of 1850 into law, but it was his support for the Fugitive Slave Act, a controversial element of the compromise that required all escaped

slaves, upon capture, be returned to their masters and that officials and citizens in free states had to cooperate with the law. Signing and enforcing the act would come back to haunt Fillmore in 1852, when he decided to run for a full term as President. The Whig Party, still upset that Fillmore supported the act, chose not to nominate Fillmore. That decision effectively ended Fillmore’s political career, though he did make a memorable run as a third party candidate in the election of 1856. In that election, Fillmore was the presidential nominee of the American Party, winning 21 percent of the vote, which was one of the best showings a third-party presidential candidate ever produced. Millard Fillmore passed away on March 8th, 1874, from complications of a stroke.

Sixth grader Brendan Deneen was crowned the winner of Unqua Elementary School’s first fourththrough sixth-grade spelling bee, qualifying him to compete in the Hofstra Long Island Regional Scripps Spelling Bee on February 8th. This bee is the official qualifying competition for the National Scripps Spelling Bee held in Washington D.C. during Memorial Day weekend and will be

held at 9 a.m. at Hofstra University’s John Cranford Adams Playhouse. Second and third-place winners were fifth grader Jessalyn Murphy and sixth grader Annabelle Lesser, respectively. All three winners received a trophy and a Barnes & Noble gift card. The bee began with more than 100 fourth-, fifth- and sixth-grade students competing in a preliminary bee. Then

the winners from each class competed against each other for the school title. The 15 finalists were given study packets in order to prepare. The bee was conducted in rounds, and the contestants were seated in a random order that they picked right before the bee. The finalists went through 23 spelling rounds in about 45 minutes.

Berner Middle School eighth grader Christopher Muscarnera is tops at naming the location of places around the world. He was crowned champion of the school-wide round of the National Geographic Geography Bee, allowing him the opportunity to qualify for the state level and possibly advance to the national level. Sponsored by the National Geographic Society, the bees at each level provide a way to spark interest and awareness about geography. Eighth grader Christopher Guido also gave a shining performance as runner up. Eleven other students

competed, including eighth graders Samantha Carroll, Andrew O’Brien, Nino Baghashvilli, Tiffany Wong, Trevor Kapuvari, and seventh graders Nicholas Yum, Lucas Tonello, Talia Cartafalsa, Mike Manougian, Daniel Lobacarro and Joseph Nolan. All seventh- and eighthgrade students took a qualifying assessment to determine a winner for each team. These winners then participated in the school bee held in an oral and written format where students answered questions in rounds. “The geography bee is a fun and engaging way

Gaines, the district’s curriculum associate for music, K-12, the students who were selected to perform were all members of the New York State School Music Association (NYSSMA) AllState Honors Ensembles held in Rochester, NY in December or the NAfME National Ensembles held in Nashville, TN in October. These highly selective ensembles will begin rehearsals on April 9th and the performances will be in Providence, RI on April 12th, 2015.
