‘500 FOR 500’ COMPETITION WINNERS - Massapequa High School seniors Juliana Lovett and Christopher Flaherty won a ‘500 for 500’ competition. This was an essay competition, which was sponsored by Dr. Cynthia Paulis. Participants had to express why veterans are important to this country in 500 words. There will be a ceremony held in the American Legion in Massapequa on February 23rd, where the winners will read their essays. The ceremony will begin at 7:00PM and veterans are encouraged to attend! Covid protocols will be taken.

Safe Ways To Celebrate The Super Bowl The Super Bowl is the culmination of the National Football League season, which traditionally begins in early September and ends in late December or early January. The Super Bowl is one of the most anticipated professional sporting events each year. In most years, around 75,000 fans pack the stadium hosting the game to watch the Super Bowl in person, and millions of people around the globe tune in to view the live simulcast, typically at private parties with friends or alongside fellow fans in sports bars. However, this year Super Bowl watch parties are expected to look quite a bit different. The 2021 Super Bowl may set the record for the smallest crowd in attendance due to the COVID-19 virus. The game is slated to be played at Raymond James Stadium in Tampa, Fla., and ESPN reports that the NFL is planning for 20 percent seating capacity at the game. Fans are expected to wear masks and will sit in pods separated by six feet. That capacity
restriction would place around 13,000 fans in the stadium. Super Bowl I, which took place in 1967, was the only Super Bowl in history not to sell out, and that drew a crowd of 61,946 fans. While scoring a ticket to the hottest game in town is often an expensive endeavor, with capacity restrictions for this year’s game it likely will be even more difficult for diehard fans to attend the game in person. Instead, individuals can view the game on CBS or stream it through CBS All Access. Here are some ways to safely celebrate while enjoying the game. • Go cashless. For those who will be at Raymond James Stadium for the big game, cash is not king. The NFL has partnered with Visa to employ cashless payment systems for everything at the venue. In addition, there will be reverse ATMs to turn cash into pre-paid cards to use for purchases. • Order in. The Super Bowl is one of the biggest nights for pizza sales and other takeout. Fans can make it even more so by ordering from their
favorite restaurants — many of which have been hit hard during the pandemic. • Keep gatherings small. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the World Health Organization and other public health advisory groups continue to maintain that social distancing is the best way to help curb the spread of COVID-19. That means keeping crowds small and separate. If possible, host the party outside, as the virus does not spread as easily outdoors as it does indoors. Encourage guests to dress warmly and provide heat sources, like fire pits or propane heaters. • Host a digital watch party. Video conferencing apps have been used for everything from work to school. Fans can gather online and watch the game simultaneously, but in their own homes. Share the cheers, jeers and some beers over an internet connection. The Super Bowl may be a bit different this year, but fans can still root for their favorite teams and enjoy this often thrilling game.

Town Accepting New Applications for 9/11 Walls of Honor Memorial Honors Victims of 9/11 Illness
Supervisor Joseph Saladino recently announced that applications are now available for families to add the names of loved ones to the Town of Oyster Bay’s 9/11 Walls of Honor which recognize all those with a connection to the Town who gave their lives and succumbed in their battle against 9/11 related cancers and illness. Each September, the Town unveils newly inscribed names into the Walls of Honor which recognize the family members, friends and neighbors lost to this toxic legacy. Supervisor Saladino stated, “We remember and give thanks to those who ran into danger in order to help the victims of a cowardly act of terror. This includes first responders, downtown workers, residents, students and so many others with cancer certified to be 9/11-related. The events of 9/11 continue
to take our heroes and survivors – and members of our community will continue to face darker days ahead. We watch each week as more of these heroes pass, in an everincreasing and unending number. Just as many of these rescue and recovery heroes raced to the Towers the first minute the plane hit, and stayed until the last brick was turned, their memorial stands with and lead us to those we lost that tragic Tuesday morning.” Reports from the World Trade Center Health program indicate that we are approaching a terrible milestone, in which approximately 43,000 people are being treated for medical problems and 10,000 people have suffered cancers linked to the toxic exposure at Ground Zero. More than 2,500 responders and others affected have succumbed to their illness. The 9/11 Walls of Honor were constructed under an
initiative led by Supervisor Saladino, the Town Board and a volunteer committee that includes retired FDNY EMS Lieutenant Bill Gleason, Retired NYPD Detective Tom Luberto, Deacon Dave White, Jericho Fire Commissioner Frank Sammartano, North Massapequa Fire Commissioner Ralph Raymond, Massapequa Fire Commissioner Justin McCaffrey and Rescue & Recovery Worker Joseph Pinto. Receiver of Taxes Jeffrey Pravato recently announced that the Town will offer extended hours at its outdoor Walk-Up Windows for those who wish to make their tax payments in-person by check or money order ahead of the February 10th deadline for first half General tax bills. The walk-up windows at Town Hall North in Oyster Bay and Town Hall South in Massapequa will operate with extended hours for the last 2 days of the property tax collection period, Tuesday, February 9th and Wednesday, February 10th from 8:00am to 6:00pm. Normal hours of operation are Monday through Friday from 9:00am to 4:45pm. While most local governments have restricted or fully suspended in-person interactions at their facilities, these walk-up windows offer residents a safe option within which to make their payments inperson during this public health crisis. Receiver of Taxes Pravato stated, “Throughout this pandemic, my office has remained fully operational to assist residents in making on-time tax payments. To ensure your safety and well-being, these walkup windows allow taxpayers to make in-person payments ahead of the deadline. Take advantage of this process and avoid State-imposed
tax penalties for late payments.” Because Nassau County provided untimely data to the towns, Receiver Pravato has written to Governor Cuomo to request a 30 day extension deadline for taxpayers. The Governor has not yet responded, but hope remains that an extension will be granted. Homeowners should note that this is the first General tax bill mailed under County Executive Laura Curran’s reassessment and her 2021 property tax hike. While the General tax bill includes amounts for the Town of Oyster Bay, Nassau County and special districts, the Town of Oyster Bay did not raise taxes in 2021. Any changes in your taxes are due to Nassau County and its reassessment system, which resulted in tax hikes for 65% of homeowners. When making payment, residents are reminded to sign their check, payable to Jeffrey P. Pravato, Receiver of Taxes. Indicate the property’s S.D. Code, Section, Block, Lot, and Phone Number on the check. When paying in person, residents are reminded to bring the entire tax bill. Residents who prefer to mail in their payments should send them to the Office of the Receiver of Taxes, 74 Audrey Avenue, Oyster Bay, N.Y. 11771-1539. Payments being made by mail should include the

Oyster Bay Town Supervisor Joseph Saladino and Councilman Tom Hand announce that upgrades will soon be made to various baseball fields in time for the spring 2021 season. Two fields at John Burns Park in Massapequa will receive significant improvements, including artificial turf replacement, before Little Leaguers return to the field this April. “Safety upgrades are coming soon to baseball fields at John Burns Park in Massapequa,” said Supervisor Saladino. “To ensure the safety of little leaguers and others who use the fields, we are replacing worn out turf which poses as a tripping hazard for players. Thanks to diligence our Departments of Parks and Public Works, the most necessary improvements will be made in a cost-conscious manner
while ensuring the fields are ready for the spring season.” One baseball field, located at the front of the John Burns Park, will undergo a full infield replacement, while another, at the back of the park, will undergo construction of new side panels. The artificial turf at both of these fields is beyond its life capacity and therefore have worn out patches that could pose dangerous to players on the field. Renovations will begin as soon as weather permits, and be completed in time for the anticipated opening day of little league this April. Councilman Tom Hand stated, “John Burns Park is so beautiful and the ballfields have gotten great use by the community. With significant use by local teams, the fields have gotten old and worn down over time. These

improvements will bring a facelift to the fields, thereby improving safety for players and achieving the repairs in the most cost-effective way.” Artificial turf fields have a useful life of approximately 8-10 years, however, they are less expensive than the long-term cost of maintaining natural grass and a dirt surface. Turf fields also provide the potential for fewer cancellations as the field us able to absorb rain storms in a manner that is not possible on a dirt infield. Turf replacement must be considered when loose inlays pose tripping hazards, fibers split and shred, and when inlays are worn out. When fields experience these issues, less cushion between the athlete and stone base underneath the turf. As players fall on the field, they are at a higher risk of injury and even concussion.

Sweethearts who want to keep their relationships running strong know that Valentine’s Day is celebrated each year on February 14, but even the most ardent Valentine’s Day enthusiast might not know just why this day designed for lovers to express their affections for one another is celebrated in mid-February. According to the Library of Congress, it’s hard to pinpoint exactly
why Valentine’s Day is celebrated on February 14, though the date might have ties to the ancient Roman celebration of Lupercalia. Lupercalia was a spring festival celebrated each year on February 15. The holiday was moved to February 14 after the spread of Christianity. The Christian faith had several early martyrs named Valentine, and each of them were celebrated with

This Coalition has three staff members, so volunteers are so important to them, volunteering not because they have the time, but because they have the heart to do so. Thankfully, BBCC has been able to stay afloat and operating throughout the entire pandemic! The BBCC is currently looking for volunteers to assist with virtual fundraising events. If you have some experience with social media (Facebook and Instagram) and are comfortable posting and boosting ads, please let the coalition know. They have several virtual events in the near future and can use some assistance! Join the BBCC for a virtual webinar on February 11th at 6pm, called The Care Behind Your Care. Physicians from The Cancer Institute at Good Samaritan Hospital will host a “mock tumor board”, exhibiting the interdisciplinary approach to patient care. $20 per person includes a sherpa lined throw and tote bag! The Babylon Breast Cancer Coalition (BBCC) was founded in 1993 by three friends who lived in Babylon. Determined to fight against breast cancer by raising awareness and educating women, the BBCC with their dedicated volunteers undertook the task of completing a demographic survey to ascertain the incidence of breast cancer in Babylon. From this, a volunteer driven grass-roots organization grew, which serves the entire Township of Babylon, including those with all gynecological cancers in addition to those with breast cancer. Today they provide direct patient services and support to help ease the burdens that breast and all gynecological cancers put on patients and their families/caregivers. In addition to assisting in the basic needs of those battling cancer, they also reach out to the community at large, providing educational programs to encourage healthier lifestyles, which would decrease the still very high instance of these cancers in our community. Please note, if you do not live in this township, you can still reach out to the BBCC to find out who in your area can be of help to you. The BBCC’s premier program is titled Lend a Helping Hand (LAHH). Since its inception in 1996, this unique patient service program provides much needed stress relief for breast cancer patients currently in treatment, as well as their families confronting diagnosis and ensuing treatments, such as chemotherapy and radiation. Later on, the BBCC expanded the LAHH program to include Babylon Township women undergoing treatment for all types of gynecological cancers. Some of the services this program offers include house cleaning, transportation to/from medical appointments, financial

Oyster Bay operates three ice skating facilities, two outdoor and one indoor. The outdoor ice rinks are located at Marjorie Post Park, Unqua and Merrick Roads in Massapequa, and at Syosset-Woodbury Community Park, 7900 Jericho Turnpike in Woodbury. Oyster Bay Town Councilman Tom Hand recently announced that the Town has added a public skating session at its outdoor ice skating rink at Marjorie Post Community Park in Massapequa. Throughout the month of February, this facility will offer a 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. session for skaters to enjoy. “Ice skating is a fun, naturally social distanced activity, and there remain current limitations on activities residents and their families can enjoy,” said Councilman Hand. “To help offer our residents fun recreational opportunities they can enjoy in a safe manner, we’ve added an additional public skating session at our outdoor rink at Marjorie Post.” Capacity is limited at each Town rink, and face masks must be worn at all times.
