THE BLUE GLASSES

Vrooommm! The sound of the car engine was all I could hear. I just got back from the eye doctor. Not good. I knew that someday I would get them, but now? I was only 3 years-old. I looked at my mom and brother. They were talking, but I could not hear them. My brother might have been thinking, “Now I have this loser brother with glasses.” I bet he would have said something but my mom would not let him. She simply wouldn’t. Then my mom took her phone out of her pocket and gave it to my brother. I saw him scroll down until the contact for my dad came up. I was starting to hear now, but faintly. My brother hit the “speaker” button on her phone. “Guess who is going to look even more handsome?” My dad guessed me on the first try. About five more minutes passed, and we were rolling down a “one-

way” parking lot entrance. I saw these menacing looking penguins out of the few inches of window space I had because I was so short. They were staring me down, those ugly penguins. I thought how silly I was to think those penguins are menacing. I thought how my eyes might be acting up or maybe the tinted window might be doing it. I looked up from the seemingly menacing penguins up to the name of the shop. It was called the Eyeglass House. Then we found a spot in the deserted parking lot. When I walked into the store, it was a room where I half expected there to be gas coming out of the wall like a torture chamber. It was a 6’x6’ room with a hat rack and a 2’x4’ bench. There was another door in front of me. I walked through the door, touching a dry, old, rusty doorknob. I looked to the left and saw two desks and at least 100 pairs

of glasses. I saw a bunch of chairs with a life-sized Mickey Mouse. I took a seat… “Slay-terry?” an old woman croaked. My mom, Aidan and I stood up and walked over. The old woman had bright purple glasses and nasty, old, ugly, horribly crooked teeth that reminded me of a beaver’s. She picked out three pairs and I disliked all of them. We tried on a green pair that I looked stupid in, a red pair that I liked the best, and heavy, vomit-worthy blue ones that had holes in the rims that kept the glasses on my face. The holes must have been there to catch a new fashion trend, but the only thing it was catching was strands of my hair. “I like these!” the nasty lady and Mom said. Moments after, we walked out with me wearing the blue glasses. I guess all stories don’t have happy endings.

Hope: A feeling of expectation and desire for a particular thing to happen. And so it begins. February, the month of anticipation, from furry groundhogs predicting the forecast to expressions of love and affection come Valentine’s Day. Is there anyone who isn’t even the slightest bit glad to bid January farewell? Apologies, once again, to anyone with birthdays, anniversaries and other notable milestones during this first month of the new year, the symbolic representation of all things new and fresh. With the possible exception of the few moments of New Year’s Eve celebrations which spilled over into the next morning, I have to

say that, for me, 2016 is severely lacking in positive spin. Sure, winter has spared us its wrath for the most part…save for one tiny twofoot helping of the white stuff. Still, the bitter cold and gray, overcast skies leave something to be desired. There is only so much hibernating and vegetating one can realistically do. (Netﬂix, anyone?) But here we are, turning the page – on the calendar and hopefully on life – as month two begins, providing us with yet another blank canvas to fill. Here’s to getting back to doing those things which make us happy, to not allowing the negativity of other individuals and situations dictate our moods, to rising above the monotony in search of fulfillment.

Here’s to hoping that February provides the perfect precursor to spring, and all the beauty and wonderment it brings. Plus, we have an extra day to take advantage of this year, a bonus opportunity if ever there was one. Now all we have to do is make use of it, and of all those clichéd philosophies we want so badly to believe in. Whatever it is you are hoping for, may you have the courage to go after it. Good things come to those who wait; but a pointed step in the right direction surely doesn’t hurt. Here’s to February, to frosted windowpanes and picturesque winter sunsets and the beginnings of revitalization. Oh, and of course Buddy the Betta’s 1st birthday. Priorities humans, priorities.

Applications Due

As the Massapequa School District begins to craft its proposed budget for the 2016-2017 school year, several public discussion meetings have been scheduled, providing residents with a chance to raise questions or concerns about the budget and become better informed about the budget process. Three meetings are scheduled between February 4th and March 17th in Massapequa High School’s Baldwin Auditorium, beginning at 8 p.m. The budget adoption and the public budget hearing will take place on April 7th and May 5th, respectively. The budget vote is May 17th. Following the district’s traditional format, the first meeting on Feb. 4 will center on general support, including Central Office

administration, school facilities, transportation and estimates of employee benefits; the second meeting, on March 3, will focus on all curriculum and instruction programs, as well as instructional support areas such as social work and psychology. The third meeting, on March 17th, will discuss limits under the New York State property tax cap, state aid and other information released from the governor’s executive budget that may impact the proposed school budget. Moving into the fifth year of the tax cap, the state comptroller’s office has announced a Consumer Price Index (CPI) of almost zero percent (0.12 %), the tightest restriction yet on a factor that helps determine the district’s tax levy. Because of prudent

financial planning, the district is anticipating that the 2016-17 budget will continue all student programs and be within the New York State tax cap limits. Residents should understand that although the property tax cap imposes a limit on the district’s overall tax levy, individual property taxes can ﬂuctuate either up or down, depending on changes made in assessed value by the Nassau County Department of Assessment.
