WEDDING FLOWERS - Couples are moving away from traditional centerpieces to floral chandeliers and curtains made of blooms for their weddings. Move over bouquets and centerpieces, flowers are taking over weddings in a big way. While wedding trends come and go, flowers will always have a place at the wedding table. The blooms brides and grooms choose and how they decide to display them can say much about the couple’s style. Many modern couples are opting for statement pieces with their flowers to rival the big and bold ideas they’re incorporating elsewhere into their occasions, such as in cakes and clothing. In fact, floral designer Tom Uberuaga says traditional hurricane vase centerpieces are outdated and only focus the eye on the middle of the table. He prefers guests enter the wedding and have their senses stimulated by flowers from all angles. Large flower installations, as well as blooms popping up in unexpected places, are some of the hot trends for couples to keep their eyes on.

Did you know? While flowers certainly add beauty and a wonderful aroma to wedding ceremonies and receptions, there are other reasons behind their inclusion in such festivities. In ancient Rome, brides carried or wore flower garlands because the Romans believed flowers signified hope, fertility and new beginnings. In the Middle Ages, brides did not carry flowers, but rather strong-smelling spices and herbs. The rationale was that the herbs and spices would drive away bad luck and evil spirits. Flowers also served another practical purpose. In eras when bathing was a luxury, different flowers and herbs helped mask body odors. It wasn’t until the Victorian era, when flowers were used to symbolize romantic love, that they became part of wedding ceremonies, according to Modern Weddings magazine.

The Y believes that when people come together for a common cause, the entire community is strengthened. When someone becomes

a volunteer, they have the opportunity to share their blessings with those who need it most. You can take an active role in strengthening your community by volunteering at the Y! The Massapequa High School varsity wrestling team sent a powerful message to their community and to the youngsters who look up to them by vowing to stay away from drugs. Prior to their match on Jan. 15, wrestlers from both Massapequa and Freeport took part in a short Wrestling Takes Down Drugs presentation. The purpose of the initiative is to combat the growing opioid epidemic

on Long Island. Members of the wrestling team together signed a pledge acknowledging that opioids and related drugs are addictive and harmful to their bodies, and would stay clear from those drugs. They would focus their attention on being the best possible wrestlers. Nassau County Police Commissioner Patrick Ryder, who was in attendance with several county police officers, told students to take the

Savvy couples who have guests’ health and comfort in mind recognize the importance of offering a varied meal plan for wedding-related parties and receptions. The following are some ideas to consider when planning wedding menus. • Consider a buffet-style service. Although couples might like the tradition and ﬂair that a seated/plated meal offers, it creates a much more limited selection of meal options. Buffet-style dinner service often provides couples with multiple choices, and it’s much more likely they can come up with a combination that caters to any food allergies or dietary

restrictions guests may have. • Opt for food stations. In lieu of one long buffet table, a modern approach is to have staffed food stations. Foods as well as their ingredients can be clearly stated on food table placards so guests can make appropriate choices. • Offer alternatives for dessert. Wedding cake can be a challenge to someone with a gluten sensitivity or an egg or a nut allergy. While not every guest indulges in dessert, make it a point to offer an alternative to cake. Perhaps a groom’s cake can be revamped into glutenfree cookie bars or a nut-free triﬂe. Couples who know in advance which types of dietary restrictions their guests have can work with caterers to devise a menu that suits everyone.

Make A Statement With Your Wedding Cake Brides and grooms may pour over every detail of their weddings, but few components of the festivities may be as fun, especially for foodies, as deciding what the wedding cake will look like. On Jan 7 Dr. Cynthia Paulis announced her candidacy to run for Mayor of the village of Massapequa Park. This proud veteran served four years with the United States Public Health Service. She is a retired trauma trained emergency room physician for over twenty years with some very impressive credentials. The energetic 66 year old has 60 year history with Massapequa Park attending Birch Lane, Berner, and Massapequa High School graduating with honors. She was one of the first six women admitted to the Business school at Georgetown University finishing college in three years with a Business degree. She was an exchange student in Sophia University, Japan. She attended George Washington University for her MBA. She worked on Wall street in the international department of Solomen Brothers, then at the age of 25 started her own company recruiting physicians for underserved communities. Dr. Paulis entered medical school at the age of 27 on a full scholarship and was the first female class president elected in the history of the A.T Still Medical School. She retired from medicine in 2007 and became a writer and columnist winning a Long Island Press Club and the Prestigious Folio award. Dr. Paulis was always involved in community service. She was a medical correspondent for CBS, helped as a physician during Katrina, the tornados in Oklahoma, and worked with the Red Cross as a volunteer during Sandy. She purchased and donated the first POW/ MIA chair which sits at the entrance to

the Village Hall in Massapequa Park. When the ﬂag was being disrespected she created the 500 for 500 Patriotism scholarship for seniors from MHS. The contest involved writing an essay in 500 words or less Why You are Proud to Be an American and each winner received a check for $500. “Life is a series of defining moments. For me that moment came on October 28 at 1:22 am when a car pulled up across the street from my home. Two men with semiautomatic guns blasted 24 bullets into my neighbor’s home in 29 seconds chasing a man who just made a drug deal with them and ran into my innocent neighbor’s backyard. That night the sounds of gunfire were heard as far as four blocks away terrorizing a community. Mercifully no one died that night but what about the next time? The street I played stick ball on was now a crime scene. The parks I rode my bike in are becoming a dumping ground for hacked up dead bodies by MS 13. The stores are being held up at gunpoint and knife point. Home and car break-ins are happening at an alarming rate. Not one single person from the board came to see us or talk with us yet they held a press conference and declared Massapequa Park to be the safest village on the island. Really?!! Now they come down our streets campaigning for reelection. You have two choices to sit back and complain and cower in fear or stand up and do something. I decided to step up and do something so I am throwing my hat into the mayoral race.
