he Arts In Education program at Birch Lane School brought in the Story Time Theatre by Elise May. This program improves concentration, focus, sensory awareness, listening, linguistics, problem solving and relationships, as well as boosting self-esteem. According to a briefing released on January 9th, 2014 by the Department of Veteran Affairs, at least 22 veterans commit suicide every day; and young male veterans (under the age of 30) are three times more likely to commit suicide than civilian males in the same age range. The statistics have also increased for female veterans in all age brackets as well. “Long Island Crisis Center is paying close attention to these numbers,” stated Executive Director Linda Leonard. “One important fact pointed out in the study is that for those veterans receiving care through the VHA, suicide is down by 30 percent. However, for those veterans not enrolled in a program, suicide has soared by 60 percent. That is truly alarming. We know we can play a pivotal role in helping these veterans receive the help they need.” Officials at the Department of Veteran Affairs do not have definitive reasons for these disturbing statistics, however, they do point to post traumatic stress disorder, combat injuries and the difficulties facing young veterans in re-entering civilian life. “The Crisis Center’s hotlines are staffed 24 hours a day/7 days a week with highly trained counselors who can provide short-term counseling, support, and resources and referrals. We are accessible through an online chat, mobile phone texting and walk-in-counseling services,” continues Ms. Leonard. “No veteran, no family member, no civilian should think that they are alone

January is probably my least favorite month of all. Apologies to those with birthdays or other milestones that fall within these 31 days, but honestly, it doesn’t seem like anything of any real significance happens in January – save for exorbitant snowfall totals, hazardous driving conditions and a general sense of post-holiday “blah-ness.” Am I wrong? Please tell me if I am. I would love nothing more than to find some redeeming quality for this last month. Other than the initial excitement of starting off a new year with a completely

blank slate, it’s been one endless procession of taking down Christmas decorations, attempting to pack away said decorations in some sort of orderly fashion and then realizing how very empty all the rooms now look. Of course, throw in a couple of significant snowfalls, the digging out that comes with it, one especially tedious fourhour commute home from work – and I’m about ready to hibernate with the groundhog until next spring. That’s quite enough of winter as far as I’m concerned. Perhaps if I was fortunate to sit home and admire the snow from a window until it all melted away… but until then, wake
