What Is Herd Immunity? Herd immunity is a term that often arises in relation to infectious diseases. Herd immunity has taken on renewed significance as the world has been battling COVID-19, the novel coronavirus introduced in late 2019. Herd immunity, which is sometimes called “community immunity,” “population immunity” or “social immunity,” refers to the indirect protection

from infectious diseases that occurs when a large percentage of the population has become immune to that disease. If enough people are resistant to the cause of a disease, whether it is a bacteria or virus, that disease has nowhere to go and the spread stalls, according to WebMD. How Does Herd Immunity Occur? There are two ways that herd immunity can occur.

Diseases are different and herd immunity is reached based on the pathogen’s reproduction number, or R0. Essentially this boils down to how contagious the pathogen in question is. Angels of Long Island is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization ran by Debbie and Brittany, a mother and daughter duo. They turned a small Facebook group into a fast growing non-profit organization that helps countless Long Islanders in need. Their non-profit continued to grow so much so that Debbie and Brittany decided to open up a storefront location in Patchogue called Angels of Long Island. Their slogan Neighbors helping neighbors is a great reflection of what this thriving thrift store/boutique/donation center does. “We work so hard to keep our store clean and beautiful so that all of our customers who walk through our doors feels a sense of dignity and respect shopping at our store,” says Debbie. “We are not like your average thrift store! We carry designer brands and offer a unique experience.” The mission of this non-profit is to assist and advocate for people in our Long Island community who are in need of assistance. Their goal is to empower people to overcome poverty and live prosperous lives. They truly provide a wide range of services and goods to people in crisis, however anyone can come shop at their Patchogue store, which has recently expanded, located at 350-23 East Main Street. The store is proud to take many types of donations. They now accept bottle and can donations every Monday-Saturday from 9AM-3PM, where you can simply pull up curbside, pop your trunk and a team member will take the donations for you. All bottles and cans must be marked New York state deposit and no broken glass bottles are able to be accepted. Please remember to separate glass items from plastic items before you donate them. Pickups at your residence are available for large quantities of recyclables. Additionally, they accept other donations, such as new or gently used clothing, housewares, home decor and

Oyster Bay Town Supervisor Joseph Saladino and members of the Town Board recently partnered with The Safe Center LI to illuminate Town Hall in the color blue in recognition of Human Trafficking Awareness Month. January provides Americans an opportunity to raise public awareness of the trafficking and commercial exploitation of youth. The Safe Center LI, which is located in Bethpage, provides a fast and easy path to resources that assist in saving and changing the lives of the victims of domestic or dating abuse, child abuse, and rape and sexual assault. “The Town is proud to partner with The Safe Center for this important initiative, and we are dedicated to addressing the needs of children atrisk of or victims of human

trafficking and commercial exploitation,” Supervisor Saladino said. “The first step in eradicating human trafficking is raising the public’s awareness of the victims of trafficking, and it is our hope that by lighting Town Hall blue throughout the month of January that many in our community will become more knowledgeable and passionate about this emerging issue.” Each year, it is estimated that over 100,000 children in the United States are at risk of being trafficked for commercial sex. While youth in any community can become a victim of trafficking and exploitation, certain youth are at greater risk. Youth at-risk often have unstable family situations and have little or no social supports. Runway and homeless youth,

children involved with child protective services and foster care, as well as Lesbian Gay Bisexual Transgender (LGBT) youth are also at increased risk for exploitation and trafficking. At The Safe Center, counselors, who are trained in the dynamics of domestic violence, rape, and sexual assault and crisis intervention, respond 24 hours a day to the needs of victims.
