My First Blizzard By: Jamie Lynn Ryan

Winter is coming. Winter is coming. So the humans have been saying for the last three months, and yet… only now, in the final week of January, have I gotten to witness firsthand this magical white stuff in action. And what a beauty it is, even from the confines of my tiny betta bowl. Swirling snowflakes, blowing through the air, piling up outside my window to the outside world… and my human, fervently shoveling out her electric blue car – what a fine color it is, I might add – as the wind whips across the parking lot. But still, the opportunity

to hibernate with my human for an entire weekend, to have her undivided attention while we relaxed together and watched Netflix on the couch – that was priceless. We just finished Season 1 of House of Cards and I’m already, excuse the pun, “hooked.” I must admit, I didn’t understand the obsession with scouring the stores for every last container of milk, carton of eggs and loaf of bread at first. But then I realized the horror of not being able to make French toast for an entire day, and I understood the magnitude of such a storm and the havoc it could wreak on the masses. Just the thought of a day without flakes was

enough to drive my fins into a frenzy. Add to that the hazards of commuting, and it’s no wonder humans have so much anxiety at the first forecast of a flake. Me, I have trouble navigating around my plant when the water gets a little cloudy. I have the frayed fins to prove it. I understand this may be only the beginning of the winter weather. So far, not so bad. I’m just keeping my fins crossed that there are no major storms headed this way for February 16th – my very first betta birthday in my human’s home. I expect a big turnout for my party… and presents… and extra flakes of course… Just not of the snow variety.

In the middle of the game, the score is 28 to 30. Our team is losing by three points. When the game starts, our team gets the ball first. My teammate passes me the ball; the opponents are jumping on top of me. They smell like smelly socks, and you can hear the dribbling noise of the ball as it is bounced on the ground. I had to cross the opponents over, and then I was about to shoot from the three-point line. I felt the rough rubber material with a flick of my wrist. The ball was slowly rolling around the rim, acting like it didn’t want to go in. You could see the bright orange color of the ball. It went in and made a swooshing noise. The whole crowd cheered.

Congratulations to Massapequa Middle School Student Gabriella Heimbauer, who has been selected to participate in the USA National HP Volleyball program. Gabriella, who is 13 years old, is ranked among the top 8 middle hitters in the country in her age category (Select A1). The primary mission of the USA Volleyball HP program is to identify, train, and provide competitive experiences for potential future USA Volleyball Olympians. Athletes are chosen across four age categories based on results from tryouts held across the Country. Training for this

Womens Olympic Volleyball Training Facility, under the leadership of Karch Kiraly. Coach Kiraly has won Olympic gold medals in both beach and indoor volleyball categories, and honored as the greatest volleyball player of the 20th Century. In 2012 Kiraly was named head coach of the US National Women’s Volleyball team to try to compete in the 2016 Olympics in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. Growing up in a “volleyball family”, Gabriella has always

enjoyed the sport and currently plays with her older sister Adriana. She plays for Massapequa High School Varsity Volleyball Team since 7th grade, and The Island Volleyball Academy club team. Gabriella also enjoys the same passion for basketball and plays for the MHS varsity team since 7th grade and Long Island Lightening club team. Pre-K Initiative At this time of year, parents are registering their four-year-olds for kindergarten in the fall. They may be asking themselves “will my child be ready?” Answers to that question can be found in a one-page handout from the Long Island Pre-K Initiative. This free resource lists the top 20 skills that kindergarten teachers expect on the first day of school. It can be downloaded from the grant-funded program’s website: www.nassauboces. org/pre-k, and is available in Spanish, Urdu, Turkish,

Chinese and HaitianCreole, as well as in English. “We surveyed more than 100 kindergarten teachers from 10 Long Island school districts,” says Lucinda Hurley, Executive Director of the Nassau BOCES Department of Strategic Initiatives and administrator for the Long Island Pre-K Initiative. “And there was clear agreement. What educators call ‘socialemotional skills’ are very important.” That means that kindergarteners should

be able to share and take turns, express their feelings in words and participate in a conversation without interrupting, among other abilities. It is difficult for learning to take place when children have difficulty getting along with each other - or can’t sit still long enough to listen to a story being read. The Town will once again partner with the Village of Greenport, and to additional youth hockey programs, to present a special youth hockey showcase called the “Friendship Series Ice Hockey Games.” Building on the popularity of ice hockey games being played outside, the two-day event allows youth hockey players ages to take to the ice for a series of friendly youth hockey contests and experience playing games at home and on the road. The popular event was initiated in 2014, and will have its third renewal this year. The Mites division, the Squirts division and Peewee Division players all played in the first part of the series, held in Greenport on January 16th. The action will shift to the outdoor rink at the Town of Oyster Bay’s SyossetWoodbury Community Park on Saturday, February 6th for eight additional games. Joining the Town of

Oyster Bay Youth Hockey Program and the Village of Greenport will be teams representing Superior Ice Rink of Kings Park and the Rinx Youth Hockey Program. The mites and squirts division will be taking the ice at SyossetWoodbury Community Park with faceoff for the first game at 8 a.m. The action continues throughout the day. Eight games will be played with the final matchup slated to begin at 4 p.m. “We are extremely excited and proud to work closely with another island municipality and other youth hockey programs to bring this outstanding recreational opportunity to our young people,” Councilman Chris Coschignano said. “We are always pleased to show off our outstanding facilities here in the Town. When planning this groundbreaking event, it quickly became evident that the Village of Greenport shared our philosophy with respect to youth

sports and its ability to foster teamwork, character and perseverance. Both municipalities have a keen interest in providing the opportunity for our kids to recreate and keep physically fit.” The concept of playing games at opposite ends of Long Island was exciting for the players. This unique event gives young participants the feel for playing travel hockey in a friendly and enjoyable manner while still staying on Long Island. We are pleased that this has become an annual event and residents from both the Village of Greenport and the Town of Oyster Bay come out to support the youngsters. The USDA reported that men and women who drank black tea for three weeks reduced their total and bad

cholesterol (LDL) levels by an average of 7.5 percent. Researchers concluded that drinking tea may reduce the

risk of coronary heart disease. Antioxidants called flavonoids, found in both green and black teas, are thought to
