adjustments, cutting unnecessary government spending, reducing the national debt, securing our borders to keep America safe from terrorists, drugs and criminals, and always keeping America and Americans first will all begin January 20th, 2017. We have already seen some of President Elect Trump’s positive accomplishments, even before he has taken office. He has succeeded at keeping several large companies’ plants open and operating here in the USA, such as Carrier and Ford. This has saved many jobs and already helped many Americans. We should all be looking forward to many more positive actions and results from this new administration. We are one country, and we should all have and work toward common goals. January 20th, 2017 is our opportunity. God Bless the United States of America!

In all cases, the American people ultimately accepted the outcomes and showed respect to the Office of the Presidency of the United States of America. They did the right thing and worked together for the good of our country. We are now at the same point, and we all need to support our new incoming President. The disrespect and negativity that so many are displaying is a complete disgrace and an embarrassment to all of us and to our country worldwide. The Transition of Power from one President to the next President is a tradition that has always ensured a peaceful and seamless changeover to the incoming new administration. Throughout this particular election cycle, beginning with the primaries and going through Election Day - and still continuing to this day - our country has been very divided. It is now time for everyone to accept the results of the choice of the American people and stand together behind this new administration. An apple a day may keep the doctor away, but a recent study found drinking tea might keep the cardiologist at bay. The USDA reported that men and women who drank black tea for three weeks reduced their total and bad cholesterol (LDL) levels by an average of 7.5 percent. Researchers concluded that drinking tea may reduce the risk of coronary heart disease. Antioxidants called flavonoids, found in both green and black teas, are thought to be potent weapons in the fight against heart disease. That news may be especially important for women, given that heart disease kills more women than all forms of cancer combined including breast cancer.

Unqua Elementary School in the Massapequa School District marked Law Enforcement Appreciation Day on January 9th with a variety of activities, including visits from police officers. This was the first year the school has taken part in the national initiative after Assistant Principal Patricia QuinnHendry was contacted by a representative from C.O.P.S. - Concerns of Police Survivors. The purpose is to encourage citizens to show
their support for members of law enforcement. Students were encouraged to wear blue to school. Several classes wrote letters of appreciation or drew pictures to send to local police officers. Parents working in law enforcement were invited to speak to students while in full uniform. Detective Patrick Franzone of the Freeport Police Department led a question and answer session with fourth-graders, while Officer Gina Tucker of the New York City Police

Ms. Quinn-Hendry said that the goal was to give students an understanding of what police officers do for the community. Crawling, speeding, braking unnecessarily, swerving all over the road… such are just a few examples of the skills witnessed daily on my fairly brief commute to and from work. Throw in a flurry or two, and forget about it. Such is the state of life in January. And if not now, there are similar factors to face each and every subsequent month of the year. So take your resolutions – or whatever form of self-improvement you have documented for yourself in 2017 – keep them in your back pocket as a reminder, and move onward and upward. There will be a rainbow over the horizon soon enough. Just don’t drive off the road admiring it.

So… how is everyone’s year coming along so far? Are we still avidly pursuing our New Year’s resolutions, or have we moved on to other, more realistic, goals? Sure, we’re only slightly more than two weeks underway into 2017, but even the most promising “fresh starts” have been known to bite the dust not even a few days in to a new year. Personally, I don’t see the point. Chances are, the second something negative happens, your entire motivation will be thrown off anyway; so, rather than give yourself unnecessary reason for disappointment, keep your goals open and flexible – much like life. The best-laid plans more often than not do not go according to any pre-conceived notion of how things are “supposed” to transpire. The sooner we
realize this, and accept it, the better off we will be in the long run. Take the weather, for instance. Mother Nature is not a force that can be predicted, especially at this time of year. Make all the plans you wish; chances are, they will be forced into “rain check” mode far too frequently. Personally, I’ve already had an entire weekend’s worth of appointments and obligations squashed due to snow, and have tentatively (fingers crossed) rescheduled for the next available opportunity. To be continued… until spring, most likely. And then there are the roads. Traveling on Long Island is a skill to be mastered under the best of circumstances. Throw in some inclement weather and it’s a regular three ring circus, complete with a collection of characters who

Fifth-grade students from Lockhart Elementary School in the Massapequa School District recently performed at the Division I All-County Music Festival held at the Tilles Center for the Performing Arts. The All-County Festival is a major performance festival hosted by the Nassau Music Educators Association for band,
chorus and orchestra. The ensembles consisted of 300 students from school districts across the county. Representing Lockhart were band students Vincent Eckert and Madelynn Krakoff, orchestra students Cole Arbisi and Kailey Burns, and chorus students Cooper Arbisi, Julia Duffy and Delena Martinez. Teachers selected
students based on their NYSSMA scores and recommendations. Under the direction of guest conductors, the All-County groups perform music that is challenging with limited rehearsal time. Lockhart’s musicians are under the direction of teachers Neal Bellon, Kathleen Dyckman and Clarence Kelly.

Healthy Cooking Techniques recognize that the way they prepare foods can affect the overall calorie count of a meal. In addition to choosing healthy cooking methods, health-conscious men and women can employ the following strategies to make meals as healthy as possible:
Cooking methods such as frying can make for delicious meals, but such meals may not be so healthy. For example, each tablespoon of oil used when frying can add more than 100 calories to a meal. When counting calories, men and women should

Broiling and grilling expose food to direct heat, so it is a fast method of cooking and may not be appropriate for foods that require longer cooking times to tenderize. have not been refined. The closer a product is to its natural state, the more nutritional properties it is likely to have retained. Season foods yourself. Rather than relying on prepackaged seasonings, mix your own blends. Packaged seasonings generally contain a lot of salt. Use fresh herbs whenever possible for the freshest of flavor. Add heat for flavor. Spicy pepper, dry mustard and other zesty flavor enhancers can make foods taste delicious without added calories. Try low-fat or fat-free dairy. Substitute low-fat alternatives for full-fat dairy items. For example, Greek yogurt can sometimes be used in place of less healthy ingredients such as mayonnaise. Trim excess fats. Prepare meats and poultry well by trimming the fat and skin to make the final product even healthier.
The Importance of Annual Health Exams
Annual health exams are a key component of maintaining a healthy lifestyle. A person may not see the need to visit the doctor if he or she is feeling well, but not every disease or condition manifests itself in a way that men and women can detect. No two physical exams will be exactly alike, but many will share some general features.
Health History A crucial element of a physical exam will include a thorough health history if the physician doesn’t already have one on file. The doctor will take time to ask questions about family history of illness, health habits, any vices (smoking, drinking alcohol, etc.), exercise schedule and diet. If there is a possible hereditary health condition running through your family, the doctor may suggest certain testing and make note of
potential signs to look for in the future.
Current Ailments After discussing a patient’s history, the doctor may ask if they are having any problems they cannot explain. These can include changes in eating or sleeping patterns; aches and pains; lumps or bumps and other abnormalities. Again, the presence of symptoms may be indicative of illness or physical changes, but not all diseases produce obvious symptoms. Vital Signs A doctor will check a patient’s vital signs during the physical. Areas the doctor will look at include but are not limited to: • Heart rate: This measures the speed at which the heart is pumping. Normal resting heart rate
values range from 60 to 100 beats per minute. • Blood pressure: A blood pressure cuff will measure systolic and diastolic pressure. Systolic pressure measures the force with which the blood is pushing through the arteries. The diastolic blood pressure is the pressure in the arteries between beats, when the heart rests. The systolic (top number) should be below 120, while the bottom should be less than 80, according to the Mayo Clinic. • Respiration rate: The doctor will measure the number of breaths taken in a minute. WebMD says between 12 and 16 breaths per minute is normal for a healthy adult. Breathing more than 20 times per minute can suggest heart or lung problems. • Pulse oximetry: Johns Hopkins School of Medicine says pulse
oximetry is a test used to measure the oxygen level (oxygen saturation) of the blood. It is a measure of how well oxygen is being sent to the parts of your body furthest from your heart. Normal pulse oximeter readings usually range from 95 to 100 percent. Values under 90 percent are considered low. Physical Exam The examination will also include physical components. The doctor will perform a visual inspection of the skin and body for any abnormalities, such as the presence of skin cancer. The physician may feel the abdomen to check that internal organs are not distended. Females’ physical examinations may include breast and pelvic exams. Comprehensive Testing
In addition to the exam at the office, the physical may include an electrocardiogram, or EKG, to check electrical activity of the heart; blood count and cholesterol checks through bloodwork; body mass index testing; X-rays or MRIs and bone-density tests.

A large part of healthy eating involves choosing the right foods. In addition to choosing the right foods, health-conscious individuals must choose the right methods to prepare those foods in order to maximize their nutritional value.
Invest in new cookware. Choose nonstick cookware that will reduce the amount of oil, spray and butter needed to keep foods from sticking. Manufacturers are now touting ceramic cookware, which is free of trace metals or dangerous chemicals that can leach into food from the cooking surface. What’s more, pots and pans don’t contain chemical coatings that can eventually flake off into food.

donations, as well as providing a great holiday venue and making folks feel good. “It was especially nice to have family members help me out,” said Mr. Moseley.
Thanked for Service The five members of the Massapequa School District Board of Education were honored for their service at the January 5th business meeting. Superintendent Lucille F. Iconis presented each trustee with a gift bag that included letters of gratitude written by Massapequa’s elementary
school students. This project gave the children an opportunity to learn about civics and discuss the value of community service. Members of the board of education include President Maryanne Fisher, Vice President Jane Ryan, Secretary Gary Baldinger and trustees
Joseph LaBella and Timothy Taylor. They are volunteers who sacrifice time with their families to serve on the board, noted Ms. Iconis. “They do this for one purpose only: the children,” she said. “I think it’s so important to recognize their hard work.”

National Wear Red Day The American Heart Association is uniting with companies, community organizations, families and friends to “Go Red” and “Glow Red” on Friday, February 3rd to spread the message that heart disease and stroke cause 1 in 3 deaths among women each year – more than all cancers combined. Thousands of Long Isla will participate in National Wear Red Day by donating $5 to the Go Red For Women campaign. In turn, they will receive a red dress pin or wristband, and lifesaving heart health education. Some organizations will offer heart healthy lunch and learn programs, organize healthy walks, or offer healthier foods in vending machines or cafeterias. Additionally, landmarks and buildings around the state will illuminate in red to help raise awareness to women’s heart health. According to the American Heart Association, this is such a simple way to raise
awareness and celebrate heart health. By Going Red and Glowing Red, the American Heart Association reminds women, and all of Long Island, how important our hearts are. February is the perfect time to learn more about your heart health and make positive, healthy changes. Cardiovascular diseases kill about one woman every 80 seconds, but the good news is about 80 percent of cardiovascular diseases may be prevented. It’s important to understand risk factors that you can control, such as blood pressure, smoking, cholesterol and lack of regular physical activity, and some you can’t control like age, gender and family history.
