Creative expression is the hallmark of the boo-face project, an annual artistic endeavor for seventh graders at Berner Middle School in the Massapequa School District. Students bring together all of the elements and principles of art in one piece, such as color, line, shape, space and value. The abstract pattern drawing and painting takes
several weeks to complete. Each student first creates four thumbnail sketches, then picks one to turn into a larger piece of art. The themes of this year’s faces were wide-ranging, from animals to monsters to holiday characters. Many students bring their own personal hobbies and interests into the art. The boo-face projects are
completed in all Foundations of Art classes, taught by Bethany Bracconier, Alison Clemente, Jason Coppola, Heather Cullinan and Antoinette Kearney. It is a long-standing tradition for Berner’s seventh grade artists, allowing them to express their individuality while also applying their knowledge of multiple artistic techniques.

Residents & Businesses Invited To Sponsor Hero Banners To Recognize Veterans And Active Duty Personnel Oyster Bay Town Supervisor Joseph Saladino and Councilman Steve Labriola announced that the Town is now accepting applications for the 2024 Hometown Heroes’ Community Recognition Program. This initiative recognizes the service and sacrifice of the brave men and women of the United States Armed Forces – both living and deceased – who are current or former Town of Oyster Bay residents. “My Town Board colleagues and I were amazed by the outpouring of support this program has received from residents, businesses and local heroes,” said Councilman Labriola. “We are proud to return this important initiative to our communities and look forward to further recognizing our veterans, active duty
service members, and their families for their commitment to defend our freedoms and democracy.” Banners bearing the nominated individual’s name, rank, photograph and area of service will be unveiled throughout selected park facilities across the Town of Oyster Bay in the months leading up to Veterans Day in November. Any interested individual or organization who would wish to sponsor a banner can remit $75 to sponsor the production of a banner. No profit is made from this program. Once the banners are displayed, the Town will maintain the banners, and will remain on display until Veterans Day, where they will then be taken down to avoid any inclement winter weather and returned to the service family or their loved ones. Those who sponsored a banner last year are
reminded to submit a new application in order to be included in the 2024 season. Applications must be received by March 15, 2024. Supervisor Saladino added, “This is an especially meaningful way to honor those who bravely and selflessly served our nation. Long Island State Park Dashboard Permits For 2024 Season The New York State Office of Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation is pleased to announce the following dashboard permits are available for purchase now through March 31, 2024, for the upcoming 2024 season: 4x4 Fishing, 4x4 Surfing, Stargazing, Night/Sport Fishing, Camp Hero Fishing, Nighttime Photography, and Regional SCUBADiving. Permits can only be purchased online, there will be no in-person sales. All permits will be mailed to the applicant once processed. Purchase online through New York State Parks Reserve America: visit the New York State Parks Reserve America website. A valid email is required, and credit card is required for payment. Orders will be processed in the order received and permit(s) will be mailed to the applicant once processed. Please allow 10 – 14 business days for your permit(s) to arrive in the mail. Town Of Oyster Bay Hosts 2024 Inauguration Ceremony

Master of Ceremonies for the event and Farmingdale Schools Superintendent Paul Defendini welcomed all in attendance. Remarks were also given by New York State Comptroller Thomas DiNapoli, Nassau County Republican Chairman Joseph G. Cairo, Legislator Mazi Melesa Pilip and former Congressman Peter King. Officials were also joined by Tweed Roosevelt, the great grandson of President Theodore Roosevelt. Special performances were performed by the Farmingdale High School
Vocal Jazz and Daler A Cappella. “Today we embark on a new chapter in the history of our beloved Town. This victory is not just a personal achievement but a testament to the recognition of what we have accomplished in the Town of Oyster Bay,” Supervisor Saladino said. “We did not just win an election, we have won the opportunity to shape the future of our Town, to build on our successes, and to overcome the challenges that lie ahead. As we look to the future, my focus
remains steadfast on the values that make our Town the wonderful community it is today – values of community, safety and a high quality of life for all.” Supervisor Saladino and the Town Board have returned fiscal stability and trust to the Town of Oyster Bay, turning a $44 million deficit into a $88 million surplus, all while cutting taxes. The Supervisor noted that debt is down 25 percent even while the Town has paved 35 percent of roadways, with more to come. The Town has also received 8 credit rating

(NAPSI)—Now is the time for New York residents to make sure their homes are as energy efficient as possible when storms and cold temperatures hit and in the rare event of a power outage. Here are some simple steps you can take to help keep monthly power bills down: Short-term actions Schedule an annual maintenance appointment for your furnace, boiler, or heat pump. They should be checked, cleaned, and repaired annually. This will: • Improve efficiency • Find small problems before they become big problems • Extend the life of your furnace Bleed radiators. Letting out air that gets trapped in your heating system will heat your home more effectively and reduce energy bills. If you hear pipes banging or gurgling, it’s a sign your system
needs to be bled. Service chimneys. Also, close your fireplace damper if you’re not going to be using it and consider investing in a glass screen that lets heat radiate but prevents warm air from getting vented out the chimney. Weatherstrip doors and windows. A removable door draft stopper can make a big difference. Make sure air vents aren’t blocked. If furniture or curtains block your vents, the furnace works harder than it should to warm the house, driving fuel costs up. If you really like the position of furniture covering a vent, consider a low-cost vent extender. Conserve & Manage Energy Use Keep the thermostat between 68 and 70 degrees Fahrenheit while you’re awake, and lower when you’re asleep or away. Add insulation to walls and pipes. This is a very inexpensive way to reduce
your energy bill. Focus on your attic because heat rises, and this will keep heat in your living spaces. Also pay attention to electrical outlets, anywhere utilities enter the house, pipes (to prevent freezing and bursting), and appliances such as water heaters. Adjust ceiling fans. Run fans clockwise in winter to push rising warm air down, potentially enabling you to lower the thermostat. In the summer, run fans counterclockwise to create windchill. Unplug unused electronics. Also, consider switching to LED light bulbs, which are more energy efficient. Putting lights on a timer is both easy and cost-efficient. Put rugs on hardwood floors. This provides a layer of insulation and can warm up a room —both literally and figuratively. Open the curtains during the day and close them at night. Letting the sun in— even the weaker sunlight of
winter—can help naturally warm a room, while drawing shades and drapes at night helps keep heat in and prevents drafts. Thinking long-term Get a professional energy audit. The auditor will ask about your bills and check your home to make sure it’s properly sealed. If you’re income eligible, this audit could be free—along with additional discounted or no-cost services such as insulation and air sealing upgrades, new appliances and heating or cooling systems and more. A programmable thermostat lets you fine tune when your furnace runs, letting you pre-set it at a lower
temperature while you sleep or are away and have it turn up just before you come home. Just in case Big storms happen, as do power outages. National Grid is working to reduce power outages, which involves everything from the simple (trimming trees around lines) to the complex (installing smart meters and technology that automatically locates and isolates outages and restores service as quickly as possible). To make sure you and your family are prepared if the power does go out, do the following: • Keep a gallon of water per person per day in an easily accessible, airtight container • Have three days of non-perishable food on hand (including for your pets) • Put together a first aid kit • Make sure batteries work in flashlights, lanterns, radios etc. • Keep matches, candles, flashlights, etc., where you can find them easily • Fully charge phones • Have extra medication at the ready • Fill your bathtub with water (for toilet flushing) • Turn refrigerator and freezer to coldest settings, keep doors closed as much as possible • Gas up the car If you have a generator, make sure it’s at least 20 feet away from the outside wall of your home. Never operate it in an enclosed space, employ GFCI protection, and use the proper cord. Receiver Pravato Reminds Residents To Avoid Penalties By Paying General Taxes Prior To February 12th
Oyster Bay Town Receiver of Taxes Jeffrey Pravato reminds residents that the first half of the 2024 General Tax Levy is due on January 1st, but can be paid without penalty through February 12th. “New York State Law allows my office to provide taxpayers with a 40-day penalty free period from the date the tax is due during which payment may be made without penalty,” Receiver Pravato explained. “After the 40 days, State Law requires a one percent penalty be added for each month the tax remains unpaid, retroactive to January 1st. Don’t delay, make your payment before February 12th and ensure you aren’t paying more out of pocket than you need to.” The Tax Office is open in both Town Hall North, 74 Audrey Avenue, Oyster Bay, and Town Hall South, 977 Hicksville Road,
Massapequa, from 9:00 am to 4:45 pm to assist residents and accept payments with a check, cash or credit card*. There are also outdoor walkup windows. On February 9th and 12th both offices will be open from 8:00 am to 6:00 pm. When paying in person, residents are reminded to bring the entire tax bill. Drop Boxes have been installed at both Town Hall North and Town Hall South for residents to make payments when the Tax Office is closed. Residents who prefer to mail in their payments should send them to the Office of the Receiver of Taxes, 74 Audrey Avenue, Oyster Bay, N.Y. 117711539. Please be certain to sign your check, and make it payable to Jeffrey P. Pravato, Receiver of Taxes. Indicate your property’s S.D. Code, Section, Block, Lot and phone number on the check.
All mailed payments must have a United States Postal Service postmark dated on or before February 12th.
