Classes will take place on Wednesdays at 10 am (two year olds only) or 11 a.m. (three and four year-olds) from February 21st through March 28th. Classes will also take place on Thursdays at 10 a.m. (two year-olds only) or 11 a.m. (three and four yearolds) from February 22nd through March 29th. Each class is about 45 minutes to an hour long. The cost of the program is $20 per child. Space is limited and upon registration, the child’s birth certificate and a tax or utility bill will be required to validate age and proof of residency. Rise Above We all have our obstacles, the daily struggles we try to overcome in an effort to be our best selves, to live our best lives, to reach whatever pinnacle of fulfillment possible. They say you should never compare your journey with anyone else’s, or look to compete in such a category. To each, his or her own; live and let live, and every other cliché in the book. There are times when this is more difficult than others, of course. Moments when the inclination is to reach out, to try to repair, to take on responsibility for things which we bare none. Ultimately, it is up to each individual to chart a course, to find the way that leads to that which they are seeking. In that, no one else can intercede. This topic comes to me in looking back over the last year and noting that the greatest

realization was in accepting that certain people will never change, will never become what you wish them to be, will never react in the way you have determined to be most appropriate; these expectations are simply unrealistic, and an almost guaranteed recipe for disappointment. Along the same vein, the topic of my favorite weekly podcast happened to coincide in discussing the process of being able to manage anticipation in such a way as to not have your psyche completely crushed if they don’t happen to be met. It focused on envisioning your ideal situation, enjoying it in the context of something hopeful on the horizon - and then letting it go and accepting the current context for what it is, being in the moment and choosing a constructive way to deal with it.

Easier said than done, to be sure. But such is the essence of life. If there were no obstacles, where would the satisfaction be in overcoming them? How would we even know if we were moving forward, or simply existing in complacency, never striving for something better? I know, most readers would probably prefer that level of contentment; but reality is seldom this simple. And so, we press on - minute by minute, hour by hour, day by day, week by week, month by month, year by year… until someday, at some point in time, we look back to realize that we have, in fact, accomplished quite a bit by simply being able to rise above and persevere. As different as the individual journeys may be, I think it’s safe to say this is a common goal. Here’s to smoother paths ahead.

This non-profit reaches 2,000 people per week with the mission to share the Gospel of Jesus and feed the poor. Pastor Jim Ryan is the President of this inspiring ministry, and the story of his journey to become so is so inspiring that it left me speechless.

Oyster Bay Town Supervisor Joseph Saladino recently joined with his colleagues on the Oyster Bay Town Board in recognizing WWII Combat Veteran Ralph Cavaliere (center) of Massapequa for his incredible legacy of military service. Ralph was a Sergeant

with the United States Army Air Corps attached to two different bomb squadrons and ﬂew as a tail-gunner on B-24’s, completing an incredible 45 missions. He also ﬂew clandestine missions with the Office of Strategic Services (OSS), the predecessor of the modern

Central Intelligence Agency. For his exemplary service, the Town Board proclaimed the day of January 9th, 2018 to be “Ralph Cavaliere Day” in the Town of Oyster Bay and presented him with a distinguished service medal.

Supporting Spanish Language Fourth-graders at Birch Lane Elementary School in the Massapequa School District recently used technology to hone their Spanish language skills. Students in Meredith Marin’s class created digital counting books. Children had to pick images of six different items, and write the name of the object in Spanish

along with how many there were. Students practiced their numbers and also learned Spanish words for many common objects. They completed their digital books with voice recordings. The activity was planned by Ms. Marin, Spanish teacher Stacy Chesloff and technology learning coach Vickie Ahearn, and

was made possible because of two district initiatives. The Foreign Language in the Elementary Schools program, or FLES, provides third- and fourthgraders with 20 minutes of Spanish instruction twice a week. Students completed the counting books on their own devices, which they received through the 1:1 Chromebook initiative.

Show of Appreciation Police officers spoke about their roles in the community as Unqua Elementary School in the Massapequa School District marked Law Enforcement Appreciation Day on January 9th. The guests included officers from the Nassau County and New York City police departments. Students were asked to wear blue as a show of support. Police officers discussed their jobs, showed some of the equipment they use and answered a wide range of questions during their classroom visits.

Many children wore paper hats designed to look like the real caps police officers wear. They also made cards to present to the uniformed guests. Members of the Student Council presented officers from the 7th Precinct POP unit with bags of candy to bring back to the station. Each piece of candy was symbolic, such as Life Savers for the roles as first responders and caramel for helping people get out of sticky situations. Law Enforcement Appreciation Day is a national initiative

sponsored by C.O.P.S. - Concerns of Police Survivors. This was the second year that Unqua has taken part in it. “This is a day designated to let law enforcement officials know that we recognize the importance of their jobs and that we appreciate all that they do for our community,” said Assistant Principal Patricia Quinn-Hendry, who coordinated the program. “There are many ways that a school community can show its support for our police officers.”
