Supervisor Joseph Saladino announced that the Town of Oyster Bay was recently awarded the “Veterans’ Program Incentive Office Award” by the New York State Department of Labor for the work ethic of employees in the Massapequa Career Center. As part of the Veterans Program Incentive Office Award, the Massapequa Career Center was praised for their ability to help a higher percentage of veterans than non-veterans find employment, and was praised for having a lower percentage of unemployed veterans. “The Town of Oyster Bay is committed to supporting the brave men and women of the United States Armed Forces upon their return

home,” said Supervisor Saladino. “From leadership to discipline and organization, our veterans have the skills that employer’s desire. Our career center is proud to support hometown heroes in their job search and provide veterans the opportunity to enhance their resumes, interviewing skills and network with recruiters. I commend the employees in our career center for this important recognition from New York State for their service to our veterans.” The Town’s Workforce Partnership program has been a huge success since its inception. He explained the purpose and mission of the organization and also told Lockhart students about the two children whose wishes would be granted because of their generosity. Mr. Goldweber explained that both children are from Nassau County. An 8-yearold boy will go to Disney World, with Make-A-Wish ﬂying in family members from both New York and Jamaica. An 11-year-old girl will get a Disney cruise in the Bahamas with her family. Assistant Principal Louisa Vecchione, who attended Lockhart Elementary as a child, said she fondly recalls the annual Make-A-Wish fundraiser and concert and it fills her with the same pride as it did then. Principal Dr. Michael Yannucci explained that over the 31 years, thousands of students have been a part of the fundraising effort and helped grant numerous wishes. “We are one little school, but our impact has been big,” he said. “We have a caring and compassionate community.”

children and teenagers. The school has raised hundreds of thousands of dollars for the organization since the partnership began more than three decades ago. Students from the orchestra took the stage first, conducted by Michael Molloy, playing “Jingle Bells,” “The Chipmunk Song” and “The Dreidel Song.” The chorus was up next, led by Kathleen Dyckman and accompanied by Alice Marques on the piano. Their selection of four Christmas and Hanukkah songs concluded with “Holiday Nights” in which performers ﬂash lights of green, red, white and gold as they sang. The band, under the direction of Amanda Collins, closed the show with “First Holiday Concert,” “Fiesta on the Housetops” and “Winter Wonderland.” In the audience to enjoy the holiday music and celebrate the great fundraising accomplishment were students, staff, Massapequa School District administrators, former Principal Steve Scarallo and Make-A-Wish community fundraising manager Matthew Goldweber. Being deployed to Afghanistan can be dangerous and stressful for our service members. Some of these service members rescue stray dogs and befriend them. When it’s time to head back to the United States, the last thing they can think of is leaving the dog behind to fend for itself. One soldier, Sgt. Dominick, is desperate to bring his dog, Jonsey, back home with him. “After these dogs are rescued, they develop a special bond with our service members. These dogs will not leave their side and become very attached and loyal,” explains Dori Scofield co-founder of Paws of War. “There’s no way they can leave them, so we do everything we can to help them bring the dog home with them. We need all the support we can get from the public in order to be successful with these efforts.” Army Sgt. Dominick, who is stationed in a remote

area of Afghanistan, first spotted Jonsey when the starving puppy was eating burnt trash outside of his camp. He took the puppy in, fed him, and the whole unit fell in love with him, which brought them joy. He named him Jonsey, and the dog grew to feel like a part of his family. Now that he will be heading back to the United States, he can’t bear to leave him behind. Stray dogs in Afghanistan have a very rough life and often times are subjected to cruelty. Desperate to bring him back home with him to live out his life and be a part of his larger family, he turned to Paws of War for assistance. The organization has a program in place that helps service members bring their dog home after being deployed to the Middle East. While they are always quick to help do what they can, they can’t do it alone. In order for Paws of War to be successful at bringing

a dog back to America from Afghanistan, they work with Nowzad, the only official animal shelter in Afghanistan, and get financial support from public donations. Toy Drives Yield Great Results Thanks to the efforts of students throughout the Massapequa School District, hundreds of children across Long Island will be receiving toys this year for the holidays. The Massapequa High School Key Club hosted its annual Toy Drive in December, with collection boxes placed throughout the school. On Dec. 17, students gathered up the toys, brought them to adviser Michael LaBella’s classroom and spent the afternoon wrapping as holiday music played in the background. The following day, they visited the Head Start program in Amityville to give the gifts to 75 preschool age children, with Mr. LaBella dressed as Santa. “It’s good to spread joy

within the community to help underprivileged kids and give them something to be thankful for around the holidays,” said Key Club Vice President Juliet Weiss. She added that because of the generosity of Massapequa students and staff, the collection drive was a huge success and they would be able to give each child multiple toys. Berner Middle School’s Builders Club raised about $450 selling candy cane grams, in which students could send a candy cane along with a happy holiday message to a friend. Adviser Noreen Millers said the money was used to buy toys, which were then donated to the John Theissen Children’s Foundation in Wantagh.

The organization provides gifts to underprivileged children as well as those in hospitals. At Birch Lane Elementary School, fifth graders in John Coyne’s class also hosted a toy drive for John Theissen Children’s Foundation. The annual event generated more than 700 toys this year. Each day during the two-week drive, his student put on elf hats and collected donations from each classroom. Every students who contributed a toy received a holiday pencil and coloring sheet. Mr. Coyne’s students said that the toy drive was important to them as a way of spreading kindness and making sure that every child has a great holiday.

PRACTICING DIPLOMACY - The Bay Shore High School Model UN club hosted students from Massapequa, the Knox School, Plainview, Kings Park and Sachem for a conference. The students worked on their diplomacy skills as they solved problems of international relations. For the first time, a problem was included that required the students to solve a problem within the Wizarding World of Harry Potter.

Paws Of War Helps American Soldiers Bring Home Dogs

Looking Up To Leaders At Unqua Fifth graders in the Magnet program at Unqua Elementary School in the Massapequa School District learned what it takes to be a good leader. Working with teacher Loree Moran, students studied different leaders from past

to present, including many who are lesser-known, and analyzed important leadership qualities. Working in groups, students then had to create fictitious leaders who were charged with completing world-changing tasks.

Children envisioned people who cured cancer, achieved world peace and saved endangered species. Each group completed a model of their leader along with a narrative writing piece.

Massapequa Coders Join Worldwide Movement

Elementary students throughout the Massapequa School District participated in Hour of Code activities throughout December to learn about computer programming. The annual initiative is sponsored by Code.org and features fun activities for children of all coding abilities, from beginner to expert. Lockhart Elementary School library media specialist Tara Gonzalez said that students in the upper grades have taken part in the Hour of Code for several years, so they were able to complete more concrete tasks. Her fourth and fifth graders were able to choose from among several different games. She noted that one class collectively wrote 500 lines of code in 30 minutes.

“They enjoy the challenge,” she said. “It’s exciting for the students to see their progress. They can build on what they know from previous years.” Ms. Gonzalez said that one of the more popular games was Dance Party, in which students programmed their characters to move along to the newest pop songs. Minecraft and Flappy Bird-themed games were also a big hit. At Fairfield Elementary School, kindergartners were introduced to coding with assistance from fifth grade buddies. Library media specialist Claire Mitchell said the older students served as experts to help their younger peers build “the foundation of coding.” Together they used Kodable to program movements for different charac-

ters. Fairfield was among 325 million locations in 82 countries participating in the Hour of Code. “It’s amazing from last year to this year how much more the students are able to do,” Ms. Mitchell said, adding that coding help them improve their critical thinking and problem-solving abilities. Melinda Alford, library media specialist at Unqua Elementary School, said there were activities for all students. Children in lower grades participated in interactive games on the SmartBoard that introduced them to dragand-drop coding, while students in upper grades programmed in Grinchthemed games on their Chromebooks.
