Brightening Holiday Spirits

n one of Birch Lane Elementary School’s nicest annual traditions, students, staff and parents came together to pool their generosity and help brighten the days of sick and less fortunate children. Students in John Coyne’s 5th grade class planned and facilitated the yearly Toy Drive that resulted in the collection of 1,449 new toys. Through the John Thiessen Children’s Foundation, the toys were delivered to children in local hospitals.

NYSSMA President Continued From 3 He supervises 32 staff members and guides the music education program for approximately 7,600 students. Prior to this, Dr. Gaines served as Band Director at Massapequa High School for 21 years. During that time, his ensembles routinely performed at a high level of achievement, consistently earning Gold or Gold with Distinction ratings at NYSSMA Majors Ensemble adjudicated festivals. The many activities sponsored by the New York State School Music Association – for which Dr. Gaines will now be responsible - are varied. They include the Annual Winter Conference in Rochester, NY, which serves 2,000 teachers each year with 150 clinics and sessions related to professional development and eight All-State Ensembles. Easing Into The New Year

By: Jamie Lynn Ryan Two weeks into the New Year, how are we all doing on those resolutions? Have we started the intense diet/ exercise regimens, cleaned our homes from top to bottom, blown through our many “To Do” lists and set out on our quest for the meaning of life? No? Too soon? Still easing into it? It’s okay, take your time. There are still eleven and a half months remaining to whip everything into shape – your body, home, mind and beyond – so no worries. Those resolutions will be there for as long

as you choose to pursue them. And, contrary to popular belief, they don’t even need to be set on January 1st. Any day, any time, no expiration needed to accomplish your everchanging goals. Imagine that. January, for me, has always been somewhat of a time for hibernation – of settling in, catching up on some reading (that pile of Rolling Stone Magazines just keeps on growing), TV viewing (there was a reason I subscribed to Netﬂix all those months ago, wasn’t there?), movies (because we all know what quality cinema is released in the

dead of winter) and, when all else fails, curling up with a cup of hot cocoa and a batch of freshly baked (or burned, as the case may be) chocolate chip cookies on the couch. The To Do lists, they’ll eventually get done – either by crossing each task off one by one, or by erasing the less desirables, moving them to another, less urgent column… say, “To Do: Sometime Next Year” … Bundle up, hunker down and enjoy the winter while it’s here. It’s as good an excuse to vegetate as you’ll have for a while.

The Town of Oyster Bay 2013-2014 Distinguished Artists Concert series continues in January with a number of performances at various libraries throughout the Town, Councilwoman Rebecca Alesia announced. “This program, which is one of the Town’s most popular, runs through May 2014 and features performances by a diverse collection of musical acts and dance programs,” Councilwoman Alesia stated. “These concerts, all free of charge, help illustrate how truly diverse the interests of our residents here in the Town are, and these concerts provide them with the finest cultural and performing arts entertainment in the comfort and convenience of their local library.” Councilwoman Alesia noted that for the month of January, four performances

Students and staff raised more than $4,100 to build Zachary, 6, a treehouse so that he can sit outside and experience the outdoors.
