Martin Luther King Day takes place each year on the third Monday in January. In 2021, Martin Luther King Day will be celebrated on January 18. The day honors Martin Luther King, Jr., an influential leader in the civil rights movement who embraced nonviolent activism. Despite his status as an advocate for nonviolence, Martin Luther King, Jr. was violently gunned down in Memphis, Tennessee in 1968. A campaign to declare his birthday a national holiday was started shortly after King’s assassination. However, the holiday was not officially observed until 1986, and that observation was not nationwide. It was not until 2000 that all 50 states observed Martin Luther King Day.

Angels of Long Island is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization that somewhat formed itself back in 2015. Debbie and Brittany, a mother and daughter duo turned a small Facebook group into a fast growing nonprofit organization that helps countless Long Islanders in need. Six years ago these two ladies knew of someone in need of clothing and simply wanted to see if they could be of help. They decided to start a Facebook group in hopes of spreading the word and receiving donations for this person in need. They posted a message and went on with their day, later checking in to find themselves overwhelmed with the response. Whoever doubts that there aren’t people with good hearts that are willing to help a neighbor in need is wrong, fortunately! Debbie and Brittany named the Facebook group Angels of Long Island and members would post about ways they could help others in crisis on Long Island. The group continued to gain in momentum and members, so much so that Debbie and Brittany decided to open up a storefront location in Patchogue called Angels of Long Island. Their slogan Neighbors helping neighbors is a great reflection of what this thriving thrift store/boutique/donation center does. “We work so hard to keep our store clean and beautiful so that all of our customers who walk through our doors feels a sense of dignity and respect shopping at our store,” says Debbie. “We are not like your average thrift store! We carry designer brands and offer a unique experience. I did not expect to be running a thriving non-profit organization that has a storefront on Long Island and helps so many in need when I made that Facebook group years ago. What has come since that group was formed is truly a miracle.”
The mission of this non-profit is to assist and advocate for people in our Long Island community who are in need of assistance. Their goal is to empower people to overcome poverty and live prosperous lives. They truly provide a wide range of services and goods to people in crisis, however anyone can come shop at their Patchogue store, which has recently expanded, located at 350-23 East Main Street. The store is proud to take many types of donations. They now accept bottle and can donations every MondaySaturday from 9AM-3PM, where you can simply pull up curbside, pop your trunk and a team member will take the donations for you. All bottles and cans must be marked New York state deposit and no broken glass bottles are able to be accepted. Please remember to separate glass items from plastic items before you donate them. Pickups at your residence are available for large quantities of recyclables. Additionally, they accept other donations, such as new or gently used clothing, housewares, home decor and furniture. All proceeds from this store go directly to help Long Island residents in need. Lastly, if you have some free time on your hands and are comfortable volunteering at the store, please contact Debbie at 631.205.3458. During this pandemic, Angels of Long Island is short staffed and looking for help. Their store is cleaned every morning and masks are required there. Please only consider volunteering if you are not showing any covid symptoms. Everyone’s safety is their first priority. “Whoever is generous to the poor lends to the Lord, and he will reward them for what they have done.” Proverbs 19:17

Former Congressman Pete King to join the board of the Museum of American Armor
Former Congressman Peter T. King is joining the Board of Trustees of the Museum of American Armor at Old Bethpage Village Restoration, Old Bethpage, New York. Until his recent retirement from Congress he served as a member of the Homeland Security Committee and Ranking Member of the SubCommittee on Emergency Preparedness, and was twice past Chairman of the House Homeland Security Committee where he was an effective ally in America’s campaign to confront terrorism, both at home and abroad. Armor Museum president and founder, Lawrence Kadish, stated, “No one in Congress has been as outspoken or as respected in America’s War on Terror than Peter King. He is very much welcomed to join the museum’s trustees and volunteer corps as we pursue our mission to educate and honor.” Mr. King explained, “I have been visiting the Armor Museum with members of my family for years. Its power to educate a new generation of patriots was made apparent to me when I brought my grandson to one of the programs and it made an inedible impression on him. Prior to serving in Congress, Pete King was elected to three terms as the Comptroller of Nassau County. Before serving in county government, Rep. King had extensive experience as a practicing attorney and civic leader. He began his political career in November 1977 by winning election to the Hempstead Town Council. Rep. King is a member of numerous civic organizations including the Knights of Columbus, Knights of Pythias, AMVETS, and the Fighting 69th Veterans Corps. The Museum of American Armor has some 40 operational military vehicles within its building on the grounds of Nassau County’s Old Bethpage Village Restoration. A 2011 Kellenberg Memorial High School graduate and native of Massapequa, is currently serving with the U.S. Navy as a class officer and navigation curriculum manager at Officer Training Command Newport (OTCN). Lt. Arthur C. Morales is part of a dedicated team that transforms civilians and fleet sailors into future leaders of our Navy and our nation. “I am proud of the dedication and efforts of the Officer Training Command Newport team in developing future leaders for a Navy that can fight and win,” said Capt. Mark C. Hazenberg, OTCN commanding officer. Morales, a surface warfare officer, has served at OTCN since August 2019. He previously served as the electrical division officer aboard the Nimitzclass aircraft carrier USS Carl Vinson (CVN 70). “I am setting the
benchmark of what it means to be a leader in the fleet through the development and mentorship of our young, future leaders,” said Morales. “Coming from USS Carl Vinson, I’m able to share my experiences and make an impact on how they will carry themselves in the fleet.” Morales earned his commission in 2015 through the Navy ROTC program at George Washington University, where he obtained a bachelor’s degree in systems engineering and a minor in naval science. “I joined the Navy because it allowed me to become a leader early on,” said Morales. “It provided me direction. I once was a timid and shy person, now I am very confident in public speaking and can lead by example. Not many jobs afford you to work in such a diverse environment.” Morales is the son of Arthur and Karen Morales,
who both reside in Massapequa. “I am applying for a graduate program in engineering management with Cornell,” said Morales. “I’m excited to bring my leadership experience to the civilian market where I can continue serving my country within the defense industry, further supporting the warfighter.” OTCN offers four officertraining programs at Naval Station Newport, including Officer Candidate School, Officer Development School, Limited Duty Officer and Chief Warrant Officer Academy, and Naval Science Institute. OTCN morally, mentally, and physically develops future leaders of character and competence - imbuing them with the highest ideals of honor, courage, and commitment in order to serve as professional naval officers worthy of special trust and confidence.

Because Nassau County provided untimely data to the towns, Receiver Pravato has written to Governor Cuomo to request a 30 day extension deadline for taxpayers. The Governor has not yet responded, but hope remains that an extension will be granted. “New York State laws allows my office to provide taxpayers with a 40-day penalty free period from the date the tax is due during which payment may be made without penalty,” added Receiver Pravato. “After the 40 days, State law requires a one percent penalty be added for each month the tax remains unpaid, retroactive to January 1st. Don’t delay, make your payment before February 10th and ensure you aren’t paying more out of pocket than you need to.” During this public health crisis, the Tax Office has been fully operational but has suspended in office interactions. Oyster Bay Town Councilman Louis Imbroto recently announced that Session 2 of the Town’s 2021 Winter Youth Ice Hockey Program will begin on February 6th. This youth hockey program features hockey development, skill programs and a seasonend skills competition over the course of 10 weeks at the Town of Oyster Bay Ice Skating Center in Bethpage. The program is open to girls
and boys ages 6-16. “Youngsters enrolled in the Town’s Youth Ice Hockey program are given the great opportunity to improve their skating and hockey skills as part of a program that has earned recognition by the National Hockey League for its high level of quality,” said Councilman Imbroto. “The Town of Oyster Bay’s Youth Ice Hockey Program is among the best around, with a dedicated coaching
staff ready to teach this sport to the many boys and girls enrolled in our program.” Registration will take place at the Town of Oyster Bay Ice Skating Center in Bethpage on: • Wednesday, January 20th from 5pm - 8pm (residents only); • Thursday, January 21st from 5pm – 8pm (residents only); • Sunday, January 24th from 8am – 12pm; and
• Monday, January 25th from 5pm – 8pm. The Town of Oyster Bay Ice Skating Center is located at 1001 Stewart Avenue in Bethpage. Individuals interested in registering for the 2021 Winter Youth Ice Hockey Program must bring a copy of their birth certificate, proof of Town of Oyster Bay residency (tax or utility bill) as well as payment.
