To bring some joy to children battling cancer, students at Fairfield Elementary School in the Massapequa School District
created warrior necklaces with inspirational messages. The project was spearheaded by art teacher Melinda Gibbons.
Fifth graders made close to 100 necklaces which will donated to Love Smiles, a nonprofit pediatric cancer foundation, and will be
each chose a motivational word such as “brave” or “strong” to include over the background. Ms. Gibbons printed out the designs and students placed them in necklace bezels before
adding the string. The project allowed students to explore digital art while also performing an act of kindness of others.

Making Music And Granting Wishes “We are one little school, but our impact has been big,” said Dr. Michael Yannucci, principal of Lockhart Elementary School in the Massapequa School District, at the 33rd Make-A-Wish concert on Dec. 23. The holiday music performance also featured the announcement of this year’s donation to the Make-A-Wish Foundation – $9,800. Since the school began raising money for the wish-granting organization more than decades ago, this year’s donation is the fourth highest, Dr. Yannucci noted. Collectively, the school had raised more than $180,000 for Make-A-Wish. “This Lockhart tradition has continued through the support of tens of thousands of students and their families, hundreds of educators and their families, and the larger Lockhart community,” he
said. “It’s an effort inspired by the wishes we grant and the lives we hope to make just a little bit better.” Lockhart will grant three wishes this year. Nicky, a 6-year-old boy who is now cancer free after being diagnosed at 3, will get his dream vacation to the beach. Danna, a 6-year-old girl with a heart condition, will get a maltipoo puppy and 7-year-old Cris, who is battling cancer, wishes for a large television, PlayStation 5 and many games as a way to stay connected with his friends. “I hope you all feel a sense of pride knowing that we’ve worked together to help make a difference in children’s lives,” Assistant Principal Louisa Vecchione told the students and staff, thanking them for their generous donations to the cause. The student council, led by adviser Emily Bresnihan,
also took part in the event, with remarks about joy and kindness. “Lockhart takes part in Make-A-Wish every year because we are a kind and caring school,” student council President Matthew Park said. “We not only care about people in need, but do something to help. We show how kind we are by raising money to grant wishes for very ill kids as a way to make them feel better.” The centerpiece of the concert was, of course, the fifth grade musicians. The orchestra, conducted by Michael Molloy, the chorus, led by Kathleen Dyckman, and band, under the direction of Amanda Collins, performed a wide array of Christmas, Hanukkah and winterthemed songs. At the end, all musicians and the audience joined together for a holiday sing-along.

Likewise, military kids can record themselves reading a book and share the story time memories with their parents serving overseas. Additionally, local USO reading events encourage kids to use their creativity and complete a craft that complements a story’s theme. When the COVID-19 pandemic hit and many locations had to temporarily shut their doors, this did not deter USO volunteers and staff from finding innovative ways to continue their efforts safely. USO Erbil in Iraq put their ingenuity to work and outfitted the back of a pickup truck with a makeshift trifold to serve as a reading “room.” They then decorated the inside of the room and packed up a box of books, some props and

Northwell Staff Packs Over 2,000 Holiday Gifts For Youngsters In Need
To help hospitals meet the pressing need for blood, Oyster Bay Town Supervisor Joseph Saladino, Councilwoman Laura Maier, and cancer survivor Aliyah Petrone of Massapequa partnered to host a Blood Donation Drive. 30 pints of blood were donated at this collection drive, potentially saving 90 lives since a single pint of blood can save up to three lives. “The Town of Oyster Bay is home to
many extraordinary residents and community role models, including Aliyah Petrone of Massapequa. Aliyah was diagnosed with Acute Myeloid Leukemia at 18 years old and was treated successfully at Cohens Children’s Medical Center. Now, as a cancer survivor, she advocates for children with cancer and has coordinated numerous successful blood drives in our town, thus directly saving lives,” Oyster

With holiday music blasting overhead, dozens of Northwell Health employees gathered together for a marathon gift-wrapping session to ensure that school-age children enjoy a happy holiday season. “I am so proud of each Northwell e m p l o y e e and all of our community partners who made this joyful event possible,” said Edward Fraser, vice president of Community Relations at Northwell. “Today, literally hundreds of our team members joined together to wrap thousands of gifts for children in the communities we serve. It is our belief that no child should be denied the gift of joy at the holidays.” Through an on-line platform operated by Northwell’s nonprofit project partner, Supplies for Success, employee donations were used to provide art supplies and other gifts for different age categories. Donating Blood Donating blood is a selfless act that saves lives. Blood donors may recognize the vital role they play in patient care, but many may wonder if it’s safe to donate blood during the pandemic. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, it is safe for anyone who is well to donate blood. That even goes for people who are social distancing due to COVID-19. The CDC has recommended various safety measures to ensure the safety of donors and donation center volunteers and staff members. Such measures include spacing donor chairs at least
six feet apart and encouraging donors to make donation appointments ahead of time. Appointments can ensure donors are not spending more time at the donation center than is absolutely necessary, reducing the likelihood that they have contact with someone who may have COVID-19 but not know it. The Red Cross notes it has instituted additional safety protocols, such as laundering blankets used by donors after each use and requiring all donors and staff to wear face coverings or masks during the donation process.
