Massapequa High School’s Key Club held another successful toy drive. The student organization, which focuses on community service activities, spent two weeks collecting toys before spreading holiday cheer to local children. Boxes were placed throughout the school and students donated toys for pre-schoolers at the Long
Island Head Start program in Amityville. Key Club members wrapped the toys after school and visited the facility December 20th to hand out gifts to 137 children. They also sang Christmas songs and spent some time getting to know the kids. “I like gift giving,” said Key Club Secretary Meghan McClenahan. “It makes you feel good and it

makes them feel special for a little while.” The Key Club, a student community service organization, has partnered with Long Island Head Start for years to provide toys to the children. The students also lead food drives for Island Harvest and participated in the annual breast cancer awareness walk at Jones Beach.

Joy of Toys
Penguins, horses, porcupines and other animals typically not found as household pets were the subject of a science lesson in Melissa Carney’s secondgrade class at Lockhart Elementary School in the Massapequa School District. Students studied animal
habitats, learning about different land and water environments. Each student picked a different animal, and had to research facts such as what type of animal it is, where it lives, what it eats and whether or not it hibernates. They used websites including Pebble Go and Enchanted
Learning to gather their information. The children then created their own dioramas at home to resemble their animal’s habitat, and then brought them into school. The students also created fact sheets and shared what they learned with their classmates.

Nations Agenda 2030, and has them identifying solutions to one of the 17 sustainable development goals adopted in 2015. Birch Lane is one of many schools all over the world in which children are using their creativity and innovation to address the challenges facing

It was only after a recent conversation with a friend that I realized I don’t read nearly as often as I used to, or would like to … ever, really. I’m not sure when my love of books took a backseat to … what, exactly, I couldn’t even tell you. But it certainly has. Back in elementary school, I used to belong to whatever book-of-the-month club they were peddling in our reading class, subscribing to the various newsletters and lists of new releases. As I moved up to middle and high school, English class was one of my favorites, and I devoured whatever literary material the lesson plan called for. From short stories and plays to novels and poetry, I
delighted in broadening my horizons. College was much of the same, with special emphasis on those deeper philosophical texts, followed by detailed term papers analyzing each word and phrase and my interpretation of them. Leisurely, perhaps not; but the academic appreciation for such historical works was certainly not lost on me. Since then – in the last decade or so – I can probably count the number of books I have actually read cover to cover. That’s not to say I haven’t attempted a few series from time to time – namely, the five-part Game of Thrones collection – only to fall off track and wind up rereading those very same pages I pored over just a few
months back. As it is, I barely manage to skim through my Rolling Stone subscription, and that only after it is several months outdated. My hometown library card has long since expired, and I have yet to set foot in my new local one in the four years since I moved. Aside from the occasional Barnes & Noble purchase, my book collection has remained status quo. I wouldn’t call reading more a “resolution,” exactly, but it is something I would very much like to invest more time in. Even one book per month would be a vast improvement at this point. And, this time, there will be no term papers due upon completion.

car designs on their Chromebooks and then sketching their own desired creations. Using a piece of polystyrene, a heavy foam material, each student uses the saw to craft the shape of their vehicle. They then add spackle, sand it and paint it. Magnets are added to the bottom, modeling the magnetic levitation technology that is already used for trains, and the cars are raced down a track. “This is what designers and engineers do to produce all of the things that we use,” said adviser Kenneth Schmitz. “The students learn about science and math, physics in particular, and the future of transportation.” In the spring, members of the Technology Club will take a trip to Brookhaven National Laboratory where they will race their cars against students from other schools and have their designs judged by real scientists. Eighth-grader Anthony Ripo said that although each student builds his or her own car, they can still work together and share ideas, which is what he enjoys most about being a member of the Technology Club.

Bridging the Generations Seniors and students came together to celebrate the holidays, as musicians from Unqua Elementary School in the Massapequa School District visited the Bristal Assisted Living facility in Amityville on December 16th. Fifth- and sixth-grade students in the Jazz Band, under the direction of Chris Marson, and the Chamber Orchestra, led by
Alison Pearl, performed a variety of popular holiday songs for the seniors. Students from the two groups then put down their instruments and spread out around the room with song booklets. Led by music teacher Janice Abel, everyone sang Christmas tunes together. “I love Christmas songs and I like playing for other people, and I think
they really like it,” said sixth-grader Sam Greco, a member of the Jazz Band. “I think the senior citizens appreciate it. They get to experience what we experience every week during rehearsals.” Unqua Elementary School also participates in an Adopt-A-Grandparent program, in which students correspond with seniors at the Bristal.

Students from Berner Middle School in the Massapequa School District recently came together for a full day of hands-on, social and emotional instruction during the third annual Chief’s Challenge Day. The event featured a powerful presentation, “Ryan’s Story,” by John Halligan who told his heart-wrenching story of his son who endured years of bullying and ultimately committed suicide. There were also numerous activities centered on the themes represented in the book, “The Seventh Most Important Thing,” by Shelley Pearsall, such as analyzing quotes from the story. Students explored topics such as bullying and harassment, loss and forgiveness, redemption, cooperation and acceptance. As a way to build trust, students participated in a series of physical activities

The Massapequa High School varsity cheerleading squad finished second at the Universal Cheerleaders Association Empire Regional competition on December 10th. SWINGING INTO WINTER - The gymnasium at Fairfield Elementary School was transformed to create a winter obstacle course throughout December. During their physical education classes, students ran through hula hoops, crawled under a web, walked across a balance beam, raced on scooters and climb a wall, among other activities. Lockhart Elementary School in the Massapequa School District continued its long-standing partnership with the Make-A-Wish Foundation by donating more than $5,000 to the local chapter to fulfill a child’s wish. The fundraising effort began with a walkathon in November, led by sixthgrade teacher and Student Council adviser Don Bresnihan. It culminated with the Make-A-Wish Holiday Concert on Dec. 23, with the band, orchestra and chorus performing an array of holiday music before ending with a group singalong. After the concert, students returned to their classrooms to vote on which child’s wish they would like to support. They chose to assist 11-yearold Sean, who is battling cancer and wants to have a
big party. Gail Monaco, representing the local Make-A-Wish chapter, was on hand to receive a check for $5,688, raised by Lockhart students and staff. She spoke about the organization’s work and
presented the school with a commemorative plaque to mark the 28th year of the partnership. “This is an incredible amount of money raised by our little school community,” said Principal Stephen Scarallo. “To help
grant the wish of a child with a life-threatening medical condition, and to enrich the human experience with hope, strength and joy, is what motivates and inspires the students at Lockhart Elementary School.”

A new mural will soon grace the halls of Massapequa High School’s Ames Campus following a schoolwide competition. Ninth-grade Jaclyn Portogallo created
the school and decided to replenish a mural near the main entrance. Students submitted designs based on the theme, “What does is mean to be a part of the Massapequa
Chiefs family?” More than 50 entries were submitted and the committee chose the top 10. Students then voted online and selected Jaclyn’s design. Her blue and gold mural incorporates the Chiefs logo and an acrostic using the word “chief” to highlight the school’s main principles character, honesty, integrity, excellence and family. Jaclyn and fellow art students will begin painting the mural in the new year. “We’re very enthusiastic and very excited about the student contribution to the school culture and climate,” said Tania Willman, the executive assistant to the principal. “Jaclyn did a beautiful job.
