Receiver Pravato Reminds Residents To Avoid Penalties By Paying General Taxes Prior To February 12th

Oyster Bay Town Receiver of Taxes Jeffrey Pravato reminds residents that the first half of the 2024 General Tax Levy is due on January 1st, but can be paid without penalty through February 12th. “New York State Law allows my office to provide taxpayers with a 40-day penalty free period from the date the tax is due during which payment may be made without penalty,” Receiver Pravato explained. “After the 40 days, State Law requires a one percent penalty be added for each month the tax remains unpaid, retroactive to January 1st. Don’t delay, make your payment before February 12th and ensure you aren’t paying more out of pocket than you need to.” The Tax Office is open in both Town Hall North, 74 Audrey Avenue, Oyster Bay, and Town Hall South, 977 Hicksville Road,

Massapequa, from 9:00 am to 4:45 pm to assist residents and accept payments with a check, cash or credit card*. There are also outdoor walkup windows. On February 9th and 12th both offices will be open from 8:00 am to 6:00 pm. When paying in person, residents are reminded to bring the entire tax bill. Drop Boxes have been installed at both Town Hall North and Town Hall South for residents to make payments when the Tax Office is closed. Residents who prefer to mail in their payments should send them to the Office of the Receiver of Taxes, 74 Audrey Avenue, Oyster Bay, N.Y. 117711539. Please be certain to sign your check, and make it payable to Jeffrey P. Pravato, Receiver of Taxes. Indicate your property’s S.D. Code, Section, Block, Lot and phone number on the check.

All mailed payments must have a United States Postal Service postmark dated on or before February 12th. Residents can access 2024 General Tax information at www.oysterbaytown. com, where they may view current tax bills, print out a hard copy, or pay taxes with an ACH check payment using a checking account for a service fee of $1.75 cents*, or by credit card for a much higher fee* charged by the credit card companies. *Town of Oyster Bay receives no portion of this fee.” “When calling the Tax Office at 516-624-6400, or sending an email to receiveroftaxes@oysterbayny.gov, residents are requested to have the School District, Section, Block and Lot numbers of the property in question available. The U.S. Small Business Administration (SBA) is offering residents and businesses in New York lowinterest disaster loans that cover up to 100 percent of damages due to flooding that occurred on September 28-30. These loans cover many damages not covered by insurance. Disaster Loans can be used to assist with relocation or mitigation improvements to reduce the likelihood of future damages. The disaster declaration covers Kings and Nassau counties in New York, which are eligible for both Physical and Economic Injury Disaster Loans (EIDL) from the SBA. Small businesses

It was a recordsetting year for Lockhart Elementary School in the Massapequa School District, which collected the most donations ever in its 35 years partnering with the Make-AWish Foundation. The annual Make-A-Wish concert was held on Dec. 22, a tradition on the last day of school before the holiday break. When the giant novelty check was unveiled to the audience during the morning program, there was a collective gasp, as they learned that students,

staff and families raised $13,720 for the organization that grants wishes to sick children. But that number grew to more than $14,000 in the hours after, surpassing the school record set in 2018, as a QR code on the concert program prompted even more donations. The morning concert for students and afternoon show for parents featured music from the fifth grade band, chorus and orchestra. The groups performed a variety of Christmas, Hanukkah and winter songs. Band students

were under the direction of Nicole Boyle, the chorus was led by Kathleen Dyckman with piano accompanist Matthew Greene, and the orchestra was conducted by Inna Tymochko-Dekajlo. At the end, everyone joined in for a holiday singalong. This year’s donation will go to the grant the wishes of 3-year-old twins Jayden and Jamie. They will take a trip to Disney World with their family. Joan Siedlecki, from Make-A-Wish, attended the concert to thank students and staff for their effort, and

shared stories of children who have benefitted from wishes. “We have worked together to make a difference in children’s lives,” Assistant Principal Louisa Vecchione said. “Wishes are more than just a vacation, a puppy or a gaming system. Wishes can be the spark that helps children believe that anything is possible.” Fundraising efforts include a walk-a-thon, a backpack buddies sale, PTA raffles and online donations. This year’s contribution

pushed Lockhart over the $200,000 mark in money raised for Make-A-Wish over 35 years. Student council adviser Diane Bacheller shared the story of a former Lockhart teacher, whose son battled a rare cancer at a young age, and benefitted from the Make-A-Wish Foundation. That child is now 19, has been cancer free for more than 15 years and his picture still hangs in the faculty lounge as a source of inspiration for the annual fundraiser.

Principal Michael DeLuca, participating in his first Make-A-Wish fundraiser, was astounded by the generosity the Lockhart community, and said everyone should be proud of what they accomplished together. “I am so proud of how everyone in Lockhart and Massapequa came together to make this possible,” he said. “Everyone in this crowd helped make this happen. Every dime, quarter and dollar is helping this family have a lifetime memory.”

Massapequa Teen Named Student Of The Quarter By Nassau BOCES

Nathan Wachter from the Massapequa UFSD was named Student of the Quarter at Nassau BOCES GC Tech career and technical education high school. Nathan, who

is attending Massapequa High School, is studying Construction Electricity. Students of the Quarter are honored for their grades, attendance, work ethic and preparedness.

These students have taken the initiative on class projects and are role models for their fellow students, in both the classroom and the workplace.

Getting Ready For Winter At Ethical Friends Of Children

Ethical Friends of Children, a free shop for Long Island children in need is prepared for cold weather. Volunteers sorted through recently donated clothing. The program has put out a call for children’s clothing for girls, sizes two to size 8; boys clothing 0 to 6 months and sizes 7-8-9. Shoes are always welcome. This free outreach program, run and supported by the Ethical Humanist Society of Long Island in Garden City since 1985, assists more than 2500 children and their families each year by providing them with clothing, backpacks for

school and infant furniture. The service is set up like a store so people can select what they want from a wide variety of clothes. In addition to clothing, the program distributes donations of pampers, children’s puzzles and small toys, EFC is staffed entirely by volunteers and there is no charge for any services. Individuals, families, or community groups donate gently used clothing and any cash donations go entirely towards purchase of needed items for children, such as diapers and formula. “Customers” are referred by many of

the area’s social service organizations and are supported by both religiously affiliated and private agencies funded by Nassau and Suffolk Counties. Volunteers are always welcome to help sort, organize and deliver clothing and goods.
