While flowers certainly add beauty and a wonderful aroma to wedding ceremonies and receptions, there are other reasons behind their inclusion in such festivities. In ancient Rome, brides carried or wore flower garlands because the Romans believed flowers signified hope, fertility and new beginnings. In the Middle Ages, brides did not carry flowers, but rather strong-smelling spices and herbs. The rationale was that the herbs and spices would drive away bad luck and evil spirits. Flowers also served another practical purpose. In eras when bathing was a luxury, different flowers and herbs helped mask body odors. It wasn't until the Victorian era, when flowers were used to symbolize romantic love, that they became part of wedding ceremonies, according to Modern Weddings magazine.

that the contributing students and teachers had the option of submitting hand-drawn or digitally created pieces. Because it will be published online, people will have the option of selecting the pages they want to complete and can print them out at home. “We wanted to make sure that it was accessible to everyone and digital was the way to go,” Mr. Leone said, noting that the art honor society is a servicebased organization. “This was a way to do it safely and contribute to the community in a meaningful way.” Honor society copresidents Gabriella Auz and Kayla Hassett said that the organization has created coloring books in the past, and this was a good year to revive the idea to raise the spirits of the Massapequa school community during the pandemic. They said that
all of the drawings are scenes. When the coloring also announce a hashtag colored-in pieces of holiday and winter book is released, they will so people can share their social media.

Dozens of talented student-artists at Massapequa High School joined forces with art teachers from the Massapequa School District to spread some cheer in the community. They are creating a digital coloring book, set to be released prior to the holiday break. The idea was conceived by officers from the high school’s National Art Honor Society. Art students from both the main and Ames campuses, as well as elementary and secondary level art teachers, contributed drawings for the book. It is expected to be about 100 pages when complete. With the goal of making it a family activity, the sketches range from simple to complex, so artists of all ages can find something to color. Paul Leone, co-adviser of the honor society along with Patti Krakoff, said

What has come since that group was formed is truly a miracle.” The mission of this non-profit is to assist and advocate for people in our Long Island community who are in need of assistance. Their goal is to empower people to overcome poverty and live prosperous lives. They truly provide a wide range of services and goods to people in crisis, however anyone can come shop at their Patchogue store, which is located at 350-23 East Main Street. Angels of Long Island typically holds many outreach events during the year such as a Back to School Drive, Thanksgiving Assistance, a Coat Drive, Christmas Help and more. However, due to the pandemic they aren’t holding all of these outreach events. Ones that are held are designed with safety in mind. This past December the charity held a huge Christmas Help outreach event, where many people in need were able to come to an outdoor event and children could choose up to five gifts along with grabbing hats, gloves and scarves. Then their entire family could choose from tasty food items to bring home for a Christmas meal, along with being able to shop for other food items to bring home. All of this was free of charge to the children and families who participated. There are many ways you can help out with Angels of Long Island and there is much more to write about. Sometimes the things we don’t expect and haven’t prepared for turn out to be the most lifechanging experiences. Angels of Long Island is a 501(c) (3) nonprofit organization that somewhat formed itself back in 2015. Debbie and Brittany, a mother and daughter duo turned a small Facebook group into a fast growing non-profit organization that helps countless Long Islanders in need. Six years ago these two ladies knew of someone in need of clothing and simply wanted to see if they could be of help. They decided to start a Facebook group in hopes of spreading the word and receiving donations for this person in need. They posted a message and went on with their day, later checking in to find themselves overwhelmed with the response. Whoever doubts that there aren’t people with good hearts that are willing to help a neighbor in need is wrong, fortunately! Debbie and Brittany named the Facebook group Angels of Long Island and members would post about ways they could help others in crisis on Long Island. The group continued to gain in momentum and members, so much so that Debbie and Brittany decided to open up a storefront location in Patchogue called Angels of Long Island. Their slogan Neighbors helping neighbors is a great reflection of what this thriving thrift store/boutique/ donation center does. “We work so hard to keep our store clean and beautiful so that all of our customers who walk through our doors feels a sense of dignity and respect shopping at our store,” says Debbie. “We are not like your average thrift store! We carry designer brands and offer a unique experience. I did not expect to be running a thriving non-profit organization that has a

Saladino Partners with Massapequa Cancer Survivor to Collect Blood Donations To help hospitals meet the ongoing need for blood, Oyster Bay Town Supervisor Joseph Saladino, Councilwoman Laura Maier and cancer survivor Aliyah Petrone of Massapequa partnered to host a Blood Collection Drive on Saturday, December 19th at Marjorie Post Park. Over 30 pints of blood were collected at this collection drive. A single pint of blood can save up to three lives. Oyster Bay Town Supervisor Joseph Saladino stated, “The Town of Oyster Bay was
proud to partner with Aliyah Petrone to collect donations for hospital patients throughout Long Island. Together with Councilwoman Maier, we honored cancer survivor Aliyah Petrone of Massapequa for giving back to our community. At the age of 18, Aliyah was diagnosed with Acute Myeloid Leukemia and received multiple blood transfusions at Cohen Children’s Medical Center. Aliyah has a heart of gold and helped coordinate this drive so that blood donations are readily
available for others.” “Blood donations are extremely important to help secure any necessary blood transfusions for patients. During this pandemic, blood supplies have dwindled and are critically low, so this blood drive, the largest drive in our local area, was critical and helped our local hospitals meet demand and continue their lifesaving operations during these extraordinary times,” stated Councilwoman Maier.

Johnson Announces Winter 2021 Toddler Arts & Crafts Program Oyster Bay Town Councilwoman Michele Johnson announces that a Toddler Arts & Crafts Program will be offered during the months of January and February. This 6-week program offers classes at the Town’s Oyster Bay Ice Skating Center Community Room and Hicksville Athletic Center, and is open to children ages 2 through 4. Registration will take place on January 6, 2021, from 1 pm to 4 pm, at the Hicksville Athletic Center, 67 South Broadway, in Hicksville. “The Town’s Toddler Arts & Crafts Program is a wonderful way
to help support your toddler’s development through nurturing their artistic expression,” said Councilwoman Johnson. “Classes will certainly fill up quickly as this program offers children a great wintertime activity” The Toddler Arts & Crafts Program is 6 weeks in duration, beginning January 26th, and residents who sign their toddler up for the program must choose one class per week, per child. Classes will take place on Tuesdays at 10am (two year olds only); Tuesdays at 11am (three and four year olds); Wednesdays at 10am (two
year olds only); Wednesdays at 11am (three and four year olds); Thursdays at 10am (two year olds only); and Thursday at 11am (three and four year olds). Each class is approximately 30 to 45 minutes long. The cost of the program is $25 per child who is a Town resident, and $30 per child whose care giver is a Town resident but not the child. Space is limited and upon registration, the child’s birth certificate and a tax or utility bill will be required to validate age and proof of residency. A guardian must be present during the class. A smock and supplies will be
provided with enrollment. Due to COVID-19, class enrollment will be limited to allow for proper social distancing and temperatures will be checked upon arrival. Masks must be worn by children and caregivers for the length of the class. Daily cleaning and sanitizing takes place prior to and after classes. Christmas Tree Pickup Schedule Oyster Bay Town Councilman Lou Imbroto recently announced that residents who regularly receive recycling/yard waste collection in the Town of Oyster Bay may dispose of their Christmas tree on regular recycling/ yard waste days for the next two weeks, ending Friday, January 15th. “We all love the beauty of Christmas lights and trees during the holiday season. After the celebrations are over, it is important to discard the
