Flu virus was declared prevalent by the New York State Health Commissioner on December 6, 2023, and hospitals on Long Island and throughout the Hudson Valley are taking additional steps to prevent the spread of flu, including enhanced efforts to vaccinate all employees and distribution of surgical facemasks. Worn by employees, masks offer a physical barrier to flu transmission. This is a comprehensive endeavor to protect patients, visitors, and employees from exposure to the flu virus. A declaration of flu prevalence by the health commissioner triggers the public health law that was put in place by the state in 2014. Employees of hospitals and residential healthcare facilities and agencies who are not vaccinated against the flu are required to wear a mask while in areas where patients or residents are typically present. While an annual flu vaccine remains the single best method for preventing the flu, a surgical facemask, worn by employees, provides added protection to patients, employees, and visitors. All hospitals on Long Island and in the Hudson Valley offer the flu vaccine to all employees and also provide employees with surgical facemasks, as required by New York State public health law. As a matter of standard practice, all Long Island and Hudson Valley hospitals enforce universally recognized precautions to prevent the flu. These include hand washing, the use of hand sanitizers placed conveniently throughout the hospital, as well as goggles and gowns. In addition, all hospitals adhere to rigorous infection control guidelines and policies every day to ensure a clean environment for patients, staff, and visitors. These practices are especially important during flu season. Antiseptic wipes are located in patient rooms, workstations, hallways, and other treatment areas

Massapequa students are fulfilling wishes for children across Long Island as several schools are hosting holiday toy drives. In a time of year dubbed “the season of giving,” donation boxes have been filling up. Berner Middle School’s Builders Club, under the direction of Bill Pollock, organized a toy drive for the John Theissen Children’s Foundation, which supports sick and

underprivileged children. Students contributed new and unwrapped toys in a donation box in the lobby from Dec. 8 to 20. “Everyone deserves to be happy for the holidays,” said eighth grader Madeline Ross, the vice president of Builders Club, a servicebased organization. “I feel good that everyone is giving to people who can’t afford presents.” The student council at

Birch Lane Elementary School also collected for the John Theissen Children’s Foundation. Every morning, students would bring toys to school and place them in bags in their classrooms. Student council’s elves would then go around the school and collect the bags, then unpack and sort the toys. “We give toys to children in need so they can have a happy Christmas,” fifth

grader Alexa Lorenzetti said. The student council, advised by Meghan Reedy and Allison Rifkin, continues its toy drive through Dec. 21. East Lake Elementary School partnered with the Emily Meyer Foundation to collect new, unwrapped toys. All donations, which were collected through Dec. 15, would be delivered to local hospitals and

children’s organizations. Student council members, led by Meggin Hall, promoted the toy drive to ensure its success. At Fairfield Elementary School, the student council, led by advisers Stephanie Cantelmo and Dallas Dano, collected for Toys for Tots from Dec. 11 to 15. The student leaders made posters promoting the toy drive, which were hung throughout the school.

“Some kids don’t have much at all, and we wanted to give them some gifts,” student council member Jack Sventoraitis said. PSEG Long Island applauds the Cradle of Aviation Museum in Garden City for making a commitment to the environment with a project estimated to reduce the museum’s energy usage by more than 400,000-kilowatt hours per year. That translates to approximately $70,000 per year in energy costs. The museum earned $115,696 in energy efficiency rebates from PSEG Long Island for installing more than 800 new LED lighting fixtures and LED lightbulbs in the main galleries of the aerospace museum. “PSEG Long Island commends the Cradle of Aviation Museum for replacing its lighting throughout the museum with energy efficient LEDs,” said Michael Voltz, director of Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy for PSEG Long Island. “By making this significant upgrade, we were able to provide the museum with a significant rebate, and the exhibits look great with the new lighting.” “We are immensely grateful to the PSEG Long Island Energy Efficiency program for its invaluable support in enabling the Cradle of Aviation Museum to transition from outdated tungsten lighting to energy efficient LED lights,” said Jennifer Baxmeyer, executive director, Cradle of Aviation Museum. “The new lighting not only enhances the visual clarity of our exhibits, it also significantly improves our preservation of artifacts and reduces our carbon footprint.” For more information on PSEG Long Island’s available residential and commercial rebates and incentives, as well as energy saving tips, please visit www.psegliny.com/saveenergyandmoney.

Seniors Awarded For Commitment To Health And Fitness As strong advocates for physical health, Massapequa High School seniors Tess Mannino and Dan McWilliams are this year’s recipients of the Outstanding Physical Education Student Award, presented by the Nassau Zone of the New York State Association for Health, Physical Education, Recreation and Dance. Two students from every high school – one female and one male – receive

the award each year. Tess and Dan were selected by Massapequa High School’s physical education teachers for exemplifying physical performance, scholastic ability and leadership qualities. Dan said that he is extremely appreciative to the district for strongly promoting personal health and fitness through both physical education classes and athletics. Tess added that the fun and

competitive environment of the classes is very motivating and she shows up to every class ready to play and learn. Both students say they strive to make sure all of their classmates are involved and engaged in the activities. Both are involved in Massapequa athletics as Dan is a member of the football and track and field teams, and Tess plays field hockey.
