“Spud,” who I adopted back at the end of November. While no pet will ever come close to replacing my Buddy and our very special relationship, Spud is certainly an entertaining little fellow with a personality all his own. Just a mere baby betta when I took him in, he is slowly growing into a beautiful boy with spikey blue fins and a penchant for darting to and fro and “playing” with his reflection. Spud’s swimming skills can use a little work, and I’m still crushing his food pellets into tiny, more manageable crumbs for his delicate system; but, overall, he seems to be adjusting to his new home quite nicely. And with that, we head into February, hoping that each passing month brings with it a little more sunshine into our lives.

As we begin this second month of 2017, let us take stock of the year so far… Mother Nature has been relatively kind, sparing us the worst of winter’s wrath and limiting the hazardous weather to one shovel-worthy pileup of the white stuff. Of course, history has shown February to be among the snowiest here on Long Island, so be forewarned. No matter what that little furry critter says tomorrow, we still have several weeks to go before we can start looking for crocuses. Me, I just purchased three new books and am actually looking forward to some cozy, inclement weather to settle in and start reading. The beginning of the year may not be great for outdoor activities - although, it should be noted,
some of the most exquisite sunrises and sunsets tend to grace our skies during these month - but there are plenty of indoor hobbies to embrace, from movies to bowling to planetarium shows and more. Speaking of pastimes, I was pleasantly surprised to receive quite a bit of feedback to last week’s column on the closing of my yoga studio, with many offering their recommendations for alternative locations and similarly touting the benefits of this spiritual practice. Thank you to all who wrote in – it is certainly nice to know that there is an entire community of fellow “yogis” out there, and that many of you read my column weekly! In line with that feedback, it also occurred to me that I never did share the arrival of a new little finned friend,

Studies have shown that antioxidants can possibly reduce the risk of cataracts. Load up on fruits, vegetables and omega-3. Dark green, yellow, and orange fruits and vegetables contain carotenoids, which may

Perks of Reading School Assembly ventriloquist Steve Petra and his puppets visited John P. McKenna Elementary School in the Massapequa School District on January 13th to kick off the Pick A Reading Partner program. Petra and his talking friends entertained students with a variety of literacy games, such as Pin the Punctuation on the Lobster. The three-week PARP program, in conjunction with the PTA, will include reading challenges and
a book swap. This year’s theme is “Camp Read S’more.” Classes will compete against each other for the highest reading participation. If the school successfully completes the Principal Scholastic Challenge by reaching 80 percent participation, all students will be rewarded with an additional 10 minutes of recess. Students can complete PARP Perks, which are additional activities to receive points for the
scholastic challenge. The children are also encouraged to visit their local library and will receive a PARP Star when checking out a book. “One of the most important skills our children learn is to read,” said Principal Dr. Amanda Lowry. “Reading creates a strong, positive influence and builds imagination, creative thought and a foundation for a lifetime of PERKS OF READING - Steve Petra greeted third-graders at McKenna Elementary significant benefits.” School following an assembly to begin this year’s Pick a Reading Partner program.
