Our February General Meeting was a complete success, and all went well at Sal’s Place in North Massapequa. The local Fire Departments were all honored, and we showed our appreciation to them for all of the protection that they afford us. This is a great annual meeting and we look forward to this every year. At the meeting, we also welcomed the Tunnel to Towers Foundation, as well as the Nassau Council of Chambers of Commerce President Frank Camarano, who spoke to our group. Frank does a great job and we were glad that he joined us that day. Congratulations also to Sal Carrillo, the owner of our host restaurant Sal’s Place, on his recent retirement.

Our nominations process for the new Board and Officers has begun, and Past President Patty Orzano is the Nominating Committee Chairperson. Patty and the committee will put forward the new slate for this new year. Their recommendations will be presented at the April Board Meeting and April General Meeting. We ask all to please mark your calendars for Sunday, June 5th, as this will be our annual Chamber Festival. We will once again need all hands on deck for that day. This is our most important fundraiser and we need all to get involved and participate. Past President Tony Ventiera will be rolling out the details at our next few meetings. If anyone has a suggestion for the festival’s Grand Marshal, please contact Tony at (516) 851-8531 and submit your recommendation for consideration by the committee. Our April meeting will be held on April 28th, and we will be back to a luncheon as usual. More details will follow on this. Some of our Board Members are assisting our general member, Laura Maier, with the LLS Fundraiser that she is doing. Her goal is to raise $250,000 – so we all need to get on board and see if we can help her with this project. Laura is a great benefactor to the Chamber, and we need all to assist her in raising funds. Please stop by the Massapequa Dairy Queen and submit your donation for this most worthy cause. Donating will make you feel very good helping out. There are some other events in the community coming up in support of Laura’s fundraising efforts, so please visit the Chamber’s website and social media for details. We hold our Random Acts of Kindness program headed by Past President Gary Slavin at our General Meetings. The program is going very well, so be sure to attend our upcoming General Meetings and see if Gary selects you to be the monthly recipient. Our scholarship program is in full swing. Please contact Shelley at the office for details, and she will forward your request to Scholarship Committee Chairperson Karen Gawrych for consideration. I will end with some member news. I am happy to report that Past President Denis Monette is on the mend after recent surgery. Also, we wish the former owner of Bayview Florist, Mark Marrazzo, the best on his recent retirement. And finally, congratulations to our March Member of the Month, Greg Massimi, owner of TLC Companions Home Health Care Services.

Seventh graders are doing their part to promote healthy lifestyles among their peers with the creation of antidrug books at Berner Middle School in the Massapequa School District. Students in Denise Robertson’s health classes are making the informative digital projects that warn about the dangers of many different substances.

Ms. Robertson explained that the purpose of these student-created books are to present information in a way that’s relatable to others in their age group. Each team was assigned a substance to research and learn about its harmful effects. They had to note its effect on the brain and body, how the drug is taken, slang terms and

whether it is legal or illegal, among other facts. Using Book Creator, every group made a cover page and an informational fact sheet. The completed books were then shared with all sixth and seventh grade health teachers at Berner as an additional educational resource.

Town Of Oyster Bay Seeks Nominations For Women Of Distinction Program Town of Oyster Bay Supervisor Joseph Saladino and Councilwoman Michele Johnson, together with Councilwomen Laura Maier and Vicki Walsh, announced that nominations are now being accepted for the Town’s 2022 Women of Distinction Program. At the start of Women’s History Month, residents are invited to nominate extraordinary women who have made a difference in their communities. “Each year, the Town has the honor of recognizing women who go above and beyond to improve the lives of those around them through our Women of Distinction Program,”

said Councilwoman Johnson, who serves as Chairwoman of the Women of Distinction Committee. “If you know a special woman who helps make your community a better place to live, we invite you to nominate her to be a 2022 Town of Oyster Bay Woman of Distinction.” Supervisor Saladino added, “We are proud to recognize women in our Town and invite residents to submit nominations of those who make a difference and enrich the lives of others. Dr. Cynthia Paulis announces the winners of the 500 for 500 competition that was open to all Massapequa High School seniors. This year’s theme was “Why is it important to vote in elections.” There was an overwhelming number of entries, making the

selection very difficult, so it was decided to expand the awards. Four finalists were carefully selected. There will be two first-place winners and two-second place winners. The firstplace winners will receive $500 each. The secondplace winners will also receive a cash prize that

will be revealed the night of the contest. The event will take place on Tuesday evening March 29 at 6:30 pm in the conference room of the Bar Harbor Library in Massapequa where the winners will be announced. Each winner will have the opportunity to read their essays.

A graduate of Widener University School of Law, she was admitted to practice before the New York Second Judicial Department in 2005 and represented disability claims before the Social Security Agency tribunal. In 2010, she pursued advocacy of disability cases at the appellate level and gained admission

to practice before the New York Eastern and Southern Districts of New York. She continued her work litigating disability cases at the Administrative and Appellate level. In 2017, she was admitted to practice before the US Court of Appeals for the Second Circuit. Ms. Zeltmann also represents veterans in service-connected disability matters. In 2014, she became an accredited attorney, admitted to practice before the US Veterans Administration. In 2017, she was admitted to practice before the US Court of Appeals for Veterans Claims. Francesca has been a resident of Massapequa for 17 years and is active in the community. She has been a member of the Massapequa Chamber of Commerce since 2017 and a member of the Friends of Massapequa Library.

YES Community Counseling Center has what they call a PACT (Partnering In Action and Change For Tomorrow) Initiative, which addresses our nation’s top substance abuse prevention priorities among persons aged 9-20 – underage drinking, marijuana, and opioid use. PACT seeks to understand patterns of youth and young adult underage drinking and substance use and implement targeted evidence based programs, policies, trainings, and education. Through community collaboration, they provide datadriven strategies and educational outreach to strengthen our communities’ prevention capacity to change the conditions by which youth and young adult substance use exists. PACT is comprised of ﬁve communities and school districts

Prevention begins when communities’ health problems are understood within their environment; only then can YES CCC effectively plan and implement strategic action. The PACT Initiative uses the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration’s (SAMHSA) Strategic Prevention Framework (SPF) to identify and select comprehensive, data-driven strategies to develop community solutions. The SPF is a 5-step planning process that guides the selection, implementation and evaluation of effective, culturally appropriate and sustainable prevention activities. The organization was formed in 1977 as a result of funding obtained from the Town of Oyster Bay, which enabled them to provide street outreach and job placement for youth. Shortly after, they expanded upon their services for youth and have grow to provide a multitude of programs for children, adults, and families through Federal, State, County and private funding streams.

(Farmingdale, Island Trees, Levittown, Massapequa and Plainedge) and collaborates with Farmingdale Alcohol Drug Abuse and Prevention Team (ADAPT), Levittown Community Action Coalition (LCAC), and Massapequa Takes Action Coalition (MTAC). They also partner with the Long Island Prevention Resource Center (LIPRC), Nassau County Police Department, and New York National Guard Counterdrug Task Force. Those entities work together to prevent the onset and progression of alcohol and substance use among youth and young adults aged 9-20.
