As your next mayor I will serve with honesty, integrity and service to the community. Here are some of the plans I intend to implement.

Taking part in community sports and recreation is an important part of how Massapequa youth develop into healthy adults. Massapequa P.A.L. and Massapequa Takes Action Coalition (MTAC) recently met to bring awareness to the importance of youth making healthy choices and displaying good character during adolescence. The new banner, “Good Character and Healthy Choices Matter” was donated by

MTAC to help promote this essential message to our youth. Massapequa P.A.L. also joins MTAC’s efforts to support family dialogue with doctors when children are injured and require prescription or pain medication. MTAC’s Opioids and Sports Handbook is now available at the Massapequa P.A.L. office. The handbook outlines important questions parents should ask physicians and assists family discussion

about the dangers of taking medication without a prescription. Communication is vital to our community’s healthy future. Town and County Officials Launch ‘Back the Blue’ Ribbon Campaign As the Nassau County Police Department and thousands of NYPD officers living on Long Island continue to face anti-police sentiment coupled with calls to defund the police, Oyster Bay Town Supervisor Joseph Saladino, Councilwoman Michele Johnson, Councilman Louis Imbroto, Town Clerk Richard LaMarca and Tax Receiver Jeffrey Pravato joined with County Legislators Rose Walker and Laura Schaefer in unveiling a new Blue Ribbon Campaign which encourages home and business owners to show their support for the men and women in blue. Supervisor Saladino stated, “No one will be safe in America without the men and women in law enforcement, yet certain radical politicians want to defund and undermine our police. In Nassau, we are fortunate to live in the safest large suburban county in the nation and that ranking is due to the dedication of our police. We ask residents to join us in wrapping a ribbon around their trees to Back the Blue.” Councilwoman Johnson added, “You can Back the Blue and send a message in opposition to the radical politicians across the nation by tying a Blue Ribbon around your tree. Contact the Town of Oyster Bay today for a free blue ribbon.”

Inspectors and Police Officers from the Nassau County Police Department’s 2nd and 8th Precincts thanked officials for their support of law enforcement. The press conference was held at the Welcome to Hicksville sign at the corner of Old Country Road and Levittown Parkway. The West Islip Breast Cancer Coalition for Long Island, Inc. (WIBCC) is a non-profit grassroots organization that was founded in 1992. They work to eradicate Breast Cancer and gynecological cancers. Their mission is to provide support services to women undergoing treatment and requiring post-mastectomy care with their “Lead A Helping Hand” program, and to actively promote cancer and environmental awareness with education, advocacy and outreach throughout the community.

To accomplish their mission, they focus on pressing these goals: Prevention: Support, encouragement and education about a healthy lifestyle. Research: To promote legislation to increase funding for environmental research and provide funding for specific breast cancer projects. Education: Providing up-to-date information through their website, newsletter, information packets and education seminars. They offer adult and student awareness programs designed to help participants increase their awareness of Breast Cancer and gynecological cancers. Services: To offer breast and gynecological cancer patients services paid for and facilitated by WIBCC via the “Lend A Helping Hand” program. Lend A Helping Hand: The non-surgical modalities of treatment for breast cancer chemotherapy and radiation leave the patient in the need of a “Helping Hand”. Awareness: Breast Cancer is survivable. Awareness of the treatments available is key to beating it.

As like many other non-profit organizations, the WIBCC holds various fundraising events throughout the year to gain awareness and collect funds in support of their mission. This September they are part of Stop & Shop’s Community Bag Program. WIBCC will receive a $1 donation every time a $2.50 reusable Community Bag is purchased at 400 Union Blvd in West Islip, unless otherwise directed by the customer through the Giving Tag attached to the bag. Additionally, they are participating in John’s Crazy Socks Giving Back Program, which started September 1st and will run through October 31st. John’s Crazy Socks is a father-son social enterprise that was inspired by John Lee Cronin, a young man with Down Syndrome and his love of colorful and fun socks, or what he calls his “crazy socks”. John’s Crazy Socks has agreed to donate 10% of their net sales to WIBCC for every pair of socks purchased from their website, www.johnscrazysocks. com, when you enter the charity code FGWIBCC20.

Every name on the September 11th Memorial and Walls of Honor will be read aloud as we understand how important the reading of the names is for the families and loved ones of those who perished both on September 11th and in

the days since that fateful day due to 9/11-related illnesses. All residents are welcome to join us in paying tribute to those we have lost.” The Town’s 9/11 Memorial - featuring a steel beam recovered from the World Trade Center - is inscribed with the names of residents lost on September 11,

In the wake of the COVID-19 outbreak, many schools hastily transitioned from traditional in-person learning to remote learning. This transition posed new and unique challenges to educators as well as students and their parents. One of the biggest challenges posed by remote learning was keeping students connected to their teachers and their classmates, not all of whom had readily available access to devices that could facilitate such connections. In recognition of that challenge, school systems worked to procure devices for students only to be confronted by another challenge: low bandwidth. According to Microsoft, bandwidth refers to the amount of data that can be transferred over an internet connection per second. Low bandwidth can compromise students’ ability to stay connected to their virtual classrooms. In an effort to help

students overcome that challenge, Microsoft offers the following tips on how educators, students and parents can manage low bandwidth during remote learning sessions. • Reduce reliance on video during class sessions. Turning video cameras off during live class sessions can help to overcome the challenges posed by low bandwidth, as live video is a key contributor to excessive use of bandwidth. If video must be used, encourage students to turn off their cameras when they are not speaking. • Use pre-recorded content. Pre-recording content enables students to stream video over the internet, saving those with low bandwidth the hassle of downloading large video files to their computers. Microsoft recommends educators who prerecord content for their students to stream to instruct those students to use class time to complete assignments.

Educators can make themselves available via chat to answer questions students may have about their assignments. • Avoid video-based assignments. It can be difficult for students with low bandwidth to send very large files, such as videos. Educators can help students avoid that issue by not requiring them to submit videos as part of their assignments. • Encourage students to sync files to their devices. Each device is different and each manufacturer has its own instructions on how to sync files to devices. But Microsoft notes that syncing files to a device allows students to read them offline, which is ideal for students with limited internet connectivity. Low bandwidth poses a challenge for remote learners. Thankfully, there are ways to overcome low bandwidth so students can keep learning.

Town of Oyster Bay Supervisor Joseph Saladino and Councilwoman Michele Johnson joined with researchers from the Stony Brook University School of Marine and Atmospheric Sciences to discuss recent shark activity, as well as their

efforts in studying sharks and tracking their movements in local waters. In recent weeks, there have been over a dozen reported sightings from several beaches, which suspected several different shark species. This resulted in swimming

restrictions on almost a daily basis at local beaches, including TOBAY. Officials reminded residents that beach staff both in and out of the water make their safety and protection their top priority, and outlined steps taken by lifeguards, bay constables and other marine units patrolling

waters. “While it may be a little unnerving to hear about shark sightings and the topic can definitely be a scary one, it’s important for us to understand that sharks are naturally found in Long Island waters,” said Supervisor Saladino. “Our greatest tool is education,

Commemorating The Lives Lost During The 2001 Terrorist Attacks Each September 11, communities across the United States commemorate the lives lost during the 2001 terrorist attacks that took place on American soil. On September 11, 2001, four commercial airplanes were hijacked and sent to various targets in the United States. Two planes crashed into the towers of the World Trade Center in New York City, one plane crashed

into the U.S. Pentagon Building near Washington, D.C., and a fourth plane was intercepted from the hijackers and crash-landed in rural Pennsylvania. In the immediate aftermath of the attacks, President George W. Bush declared Friday, September 14, 2001 as a National Day of Prayer and Remembrance for the Victims of the terrorist attacks, but many people felt

there should be an annual event dedicated to preserving the memory of the victims and the heroism of the first responders. A bill to make September 11 a national day of mourning was introduced in the U.S. House of Representatives on October 25, 2001. The bill passed the Senate unanimously. On September 11, 2002, the country recognized the first Patriot Day. On this day, the

U.S. flag is flown at halfmast. In addition, a moment of silence beginning at 8:46 a.m. is observed to correspond with the attacks. While not a federal holiday — schools and businesses remain open — memorial ceremonies are held for the 2,977 victims, including an annual reading of names of the people who lost their lives.

Councilwoman Johnson further explained that while shark attacks are extremely uncommon in our region, there are steps beachgoers can take to protect themselves and be careful in the water. “In addition to avoiding wearing shiny jewelry, not swimming during night or dusk hours, and not wandering off from shore, general precautions and common sense are often our most important tool when enjoying our ocean waters,” Councilwoman Johnson said. “Remember to stay safe and listen to the guidance of beach and lifeguard staff. We share our waters with some amazing creatures, and we just have to make sure we do so safely and appropriately.”

Curran Announces 19th Annual Remembrance And Recitation Ceremony For Victims Of 9/11 Nassau County Executive Laura Curran announced that Nassau County will commemorate the 19th anniversary of the September 11 attacks with a Remembrance and Recitation of Names Ceremony on Thursday, September 10th, beginning at 4:30 pm

at the 9/11 Memorial at Eisenhower Park. While all are invited to honor those lost in-person, due to ongoing COVID-19 concerns, residents are encouraged to attend this year’s ceremony virtually by watching live on the County’s website: N a s s a u c o u n t y n y. g o v /

September11. During the ceremony, access to the 9/11 Memorial will be prioritized for family members of the victims of the attacks, along with first responders who continue to make sacrifices to secure our freedom and safety. “The passing of time will not dim the memory of that

day or weaken the spirit of our residents and heroic first responders,” said Nassau County Executive Laura Curran. “We will honor the bravery and heroism shown by our firstresponders and everyday people who stepped up during a time of crisis, while commemorating and

reflecting on those we lost and continue to lose.” The Remembrance Ceremony will include surviving family members reading of names of residents who lost their lives in the attacks. The 9/11 Memorial at Eisenhower Park features plaques inscribed with the

names of the 348 Nassau County victims who lost their lives on that day, along with two semitransparent aluminum towers, representing the World Trade Center towers, and two pieces of steel recovered from the World Trade Center.
