Juggling, plate spinning and stilt walking were just some of the skills that students learned at Lockhart Elementary School in the Massapequa School District when the circus came to town. The highly anticipated week of circus arts instruction was held from October 15-19 in physical education classes. Dr. Drew Pinsky Talks Mental Health and Gun Violence in America By Allison Kugel

Dr. Drew Pinsky’s long running call-in show Loveline, with Adam Carolla, aired on MTV for 32 years and pioneered a pop culture adaptation of relationship and safe sex education. The show, featuring an assortment of celebrity guest hosts, served as a lifeline to multiple generations. Dr. Drew’s Teen Mom franchise, also an MTV staple, opened the eyes of television viewers to the trials of teen pregnancy and teen parenthood where previous methods had fallen short. Dr. Drew’s critically acclaimed VH1 docu-series Celebrity Rehab with Dr. Drew and it spinoffs Sex Rehab with Dr. Drew and Sober House, allowed viewers an intimate look inside the causes of addiction and the arduous road to recovery. With his HLN show, Dr. Drew On Call, which aired from 2011 to 2016, he broadened his television audience, delving into the behavioral components behind the headlines of the day. Dr. Drew’s New York Times bestselling book, The Mirror Effect: How Celebrity Narcissism is Seducing America (Harper Collins), examines the widespread adoption of celebrity narcissism within our culture. Dr. Drew and I recently sat down for a frank discussion about a health crisis that is gripping our nation: adolescent mental health and gun violence. Allison Kugel: Why are school shootings a recent phenomenon over the last 19/20 years? Dr. Drew Pinsky: There’s a multiplicity of factors and no simple answer. Obviously, it’s guns and the type of guns. But in addition, it’s the access that people have; people who have a proclivity towards self-harm or

harming others. We all know that adolescent males will complete suicide because of their use of fire arms. It’s not a far reach from feeling that your own life doesn’t have meaning to other people’s lives not having meaning. We’ve connected that bridge now. Allison Kugel: When I am speaking with a physician, like yourself, I wonder how you feel about the intangible factors, like a spiritual component. Dr. Drew Pinsky: I am always challenged by my patients in that regard. They will tell me that their recovery from drug and alcohol addiction, that I turned them towards it, but really it’s the spiritual connection they make that leads them into a full recovery. I’m okay with that. Whatever gets them there! I think there can be a stigma with words like “soul” or “spiritual” because people tend to equate them with religion. But I think [spiritual] is a word people can understand without indoctrinating religion into it. Allison Kugel: Do you think a focus on social media, instead of being more community oriented like in generations past, is leading to a spiritual breakdown? Dr. Drew Pinsky: I think it has accelerated the mob, and mob-like behavior. It gives people a sense of pseudo-intimacy, which is quasipathological. It’s not real. There is a sense of connection, with no real connection. It gratifies only the most basest of emotions – envy, aggression, arousal, and all of these addictive emotions. It doesn’t do anything for empathy, nurturing, service, making a difference. I don’t

see it as the cause, but as an amplifier of these problems. Allison Kugel: What are your thoughts about how media chooses to cover mass shootings and other large scale violent crimes? Dr. Drew Pinsky: There’s contagion, not doubt about it. There’s contagion with things like suicide, all sorts of violent acts, and with pathological behaviors like cutting. All these things have contagion associated with them. I almost feel like it’s a double-edged sword. Yes, there’s contagion, but we also have to take a good hard look at the realities we face. Allison Kugel: Let’s talk about you. When you were in high school and college, what coping skills did you cultivate to deal with things like anxiety, depression, stress and peer pressure? Dr. Drew Pinsky: I had a problem with that. I had panic attacks. I’m still formally diagnosed with Generalized Anxiety Disorder. I was depressed when I was nineteen and there were no services for adolescents at that time. I think that’s what got me interested in helping that population with mental health, in general. I was so mishandled, it was egregious. I thought maybe I was having a seizure when I was having a panic attack; I wasn’t sure what it was. But I understood there was a mental health issue. I went for help and I was told that I needed to get my act together, and I should take long walks in the woods. I would have happily gotten my act together (laughs)! Allison Kugel: We’re seeing a disturbing trend of young males and gun violence. What are we missing when it comes to male adolescent mental health? Dr. Drew Pinsky: Adolescent males, when they have spiritual and psychological problems, become aggressive. And when they don’t have some sort of outlet that they are engaged in, any time there’s social unrest, there’s young males. That’s just the way we’re wired. Males need to be challenged. This sort of co-dependent helicopter parenting over the last twenty years has been about preventing children from experiencing discomfort. I think there is a major deficiency right now. In addition to our spiritual emptiness, we have lost the ability to tolerate ordinary misery. Our children need to experience ordinary misery to learn how to regulate their emotions and overcome. Unless we are challenged, we feel deficient. Because of our

narcissism as parents, we can’t tolerate seeing the child’s discomfort and disappointment, because it mobilizes our own internal misery, which we avoid. We use drugs and alcohol, and extreme sports, and all kinds of ways of avoiding. But when we include our children in making sure they don’t have those feelings as well, there’s a problem. I think that in some way, it is affecting the young male. It’s probably experienced differently from the young female. Allison Kugel: Yes, internalize emotions.

Dr. Drew Pinsky: Women go in, men go out. Allison Kugel: I’m going to throw a scenario at you, and tell me what you think could be a viable solution: A single parent home with limited financial resources, and an undersupervised child who’s beginning to show signs of deteriorating mental health… Dr. Drew Pinsky: I feel unworthy of the question you’re asking me, except to say, make sure there is access to mental health services and that there is no stigma associated with that. But there are other solutions which goes under the heading of Mutual Aid, whether it’s a church or a community. I’m thinking about the book, Bowling Alone (Simon & Schuster). It’s about the decline of club membership in the United States. I think we’re all bowling alone (laughs). And you can’t do it; you can’t do it by yourself! But you also can’t do it with perfunctory supervision. There has to be real, intimate contact. I’m not sure we know how to do that. That’s why where there are resources out there. We need to deploy it and amplify it, and build community around it. Many people are not good at it and don’t even tolerate closeness anymore, mostly because many people have been neglected or abused. When you’ve been hurt as a result of close

relation, guess what you want to avoid in the future. We must overcome that. Allison Kugel: What kind of impact do you feel you’ve had on young people? Dr. Drew Pinsky: I hope I make them think. I’ve broadened the scope of who I want to influence. I’m not just trying to influence young people. I would like to influence all different age groups. Ultimately, particularly with young people, I’ve noticed that the most efficient way to affect their behavior is to give them a relatable source. If you remember, Loveline was about taking phone calls and then we would analyze the cases. With Teen Mom, it’s about looking at the consequences of teen pregnancy. When they approached me about Teen Mom, I knew it would have a positive effect on teen pregnancy. Lo and behold, there is ample research now to show that it did (according to the CDC, teenage births have steadily declined, across all ethnicities, over the last ten years). For young people, I always like looking at the behavior, and then saying, “Here’s how to analyze that, here’s what this means.”

Mind Where Your Music Comes From Over the past few months I have received numerous letters of appreciation from you that have filled my heart with humility and love. I am grateful to hear that my writing is impacting lives. I am also the first to admit that my writing is stream of consciousness and many times I do not know where the information I share comes from. What I do know for sure is that it does not come from me, but through me. Many times I will awaken in the morning bursting with information that I must write down immediately, for fear that it will disappear before I’ve had the chance to rub my eyes and stumble into the kitchen for a morning dose of caffeine. I call it my “morning download.” I have always believed that each of us is bestowed with gifts to share, which are infused into us by a higher source. I am just as much the student as I am the teacher. Last week I was having a conversation with an old friend about the heroes and mentors we all put up on pedestals, and whom we admire for their courage and

their clarity. The late Dr. Maya Angelou was one of those people for me. I joked with my friend and said, “I don’t know what I would have done if I ever witnessed Dr. Angelou losing her temper and throwing a tantrum.” We laughed, and then my friend said, “It would have made her human.” Indeed, at my best I live in the space of what I write, and yet, at my worst I am only human. I have the occasional bad day, but I would like to think my best days far outweigh my worst days. That is all any of us can hope for while in the ﬂesh. We must forgive ourselves and forgive others as we navigate the human condition, and be kind to yourself when you stumble. Celebrate the victories and learn from the mistakes. Acknowledge that you are a co-creator, and remember to give thanks to the universe for the blessings and gifts you have been granted. I love this radio analogy: A radio in a man’s home bellowed out a beautiful piece of music, and as the man swayed hypnotically to the song being

played, he declared aloud, “What a beautiful song!” Suddenly, he heard the radio respond, “Why, thank you!” The man took a surprised beat and replied back, “Pardon me?” The radio then replied back to the man, “You said you like my song, and so I am thanking you.” The man, incredulous and confused, retorted, “What do you mean, your song?” The radio, proud as a peacock, said, “Well, the song is coming from me.” That is when the man turned to the radio and explained, “The song may be coming through you, but it is certainly not coming from you. Don’t you know that the song you play had to be written, composed, vocalized and instrumentally accompanied by others? And let us not forget the sound engineers, producers, and the technology that allows the radio waves to bring this song into my home. You, sir, are merely an instrument that allows this beautiful music to play. But do not think for a moment that you are the song’s sole creator.”

Driven by her desire to make a difference in her community, Amy later created The Book Fairies, a 501(c)3 non-profit. The Book Fairies accepts donations of new and gently used books, and connects them with libraries, schools, veteran organizations, soup kitchens and more organizations throughout all five boroughs and on Long Island that do not have the funds to foster the love of reading. Reading materials can not only foster literacy and academic success, but they can also provide a respite from personal struggles and nature a love of reading across age groups. Every book that they collect goes through sorting, their process of thoroughly examining the type of book and condition it’s in. With only 2 staff members, The Book Fairies heavily relies on the work of selfless volunteers.

PUMPKIN DECORATING GOES DIGITAL - To celebrate Halloween and increase their technology proficiency, fourth-graders at Birch Lane Elementary School in the Massapequa School District created digital jack-o-lanterns. Two student musicians in the Massapequa School District received scholarships from the Long Island String Festival Association, which were used to further develop their musical abilities. The scholarship allowed Adriana Kamor, a 10thgrader at Massapequa High School, to take additional private cello lessons. She began learning the instrument as a fourth grader at Unqua Elementary School and continued on with instruction in middle school and high school. This year, her teacher is Marjorie Spagnuolo.

Her favorite music to play is pop and classical Sonatas and Concertos. Outside of school, Adriana is a member of the Metropolitan Youth Orchestra’s Nassau Symphony Orchestra, which rehearses at Herricks High School. Berner Middle School sixth-grader Leandro de Cuba picked up a violin when he was 5 and has been playing ever since. He joined the orchestra at McKenna Elementary School in fourth-grade, and has continued his instruction this year under the tutelage of teacher Pamela Kronowitz. Leandro’s participation in the district’s Summer Fine Arts program was funded by the scholarship. In July, he took two weeks of orchestra instruction at Massapequa High School with Ms. Kronowitz. He enjoys playing classical music. Both students had to write short essays as part of the application process.

Leandro cited that he has been playing the violin since a young age and commits himself to regular practice. Adriana discussed her involvement in school and youth orchestras and why she loves playing the cello.

Meals on Wheels for Seniors Seventy-five additional Long Island seniors will come off a waiting list and start receiving nutritious meals delivered to their homes, thanks to the EAC Network’s Meals on Wheels program and a new delivery van donated by PSEG Long Island. Representatives from

PSEG Long Island and EAC Network, along with state, county and North Hempstead Town officials, assembled at Clinton G. Martin Park in New Hyde Park, where the new van was parked. Each of the dignitaries held a piece of the bright orange cloth that covered the van. At the

count of three, the group lifted away the cloth to reveal the new van branded with the Meals on Wheels, EAC Network and PSEG Long Island logos. Keys to the van were handed over to EAC Network President and CEO, Lance W. Elder, by PSEG Long Island

Vice President of Power Markets, Paul Napoli, who is also an EAC board member. “PSEG Long Island has proudly supported Meals on Wheels for several years. That’s why sponsoring the van donation made sense,” said Napoli. “In addition to a fueled up

van, our donation includes the funding for more than 3,000 prepared frozen meals that can be delivered to households in advance of a weather emergency when Meals on Wheels drivers cannot get out. This is just one of many ways we’re assisting seniors in our area. We are committed to

A reading unit had a Halloween twist at Birch Lane Elementary School in the Massapequa School District as children created clever depictions of popular storybook characters. Each second-grader

decorated a pumpkin to look like the main character from a fiction book. Among the pumpkin creations were the Cat in the Hat, Captain Underpants and Flat Stanley. Students worked on the projects at

home with their parents, and all the pumpkins were then displayed in the main lobby. They also completed book reports analyzing different literary elements.

Spreading Kindness Through Song “Taking kindness to the next level” is the theme this year at Birch Lane Elementary School in the Massapequa School District. To emphasize positive character traits, the school welcomed singer Jared Campbell on Oct. 24 who performed his original music during a pair of assemblies.

His songs like “Love Like a Dog” and “The Superhero Song” brought the concepts of friendship, kindness and respect to children in a relatable way. As a schoolwide project, all classes at Birch Lane contributed to a kindness bulletin board. Students read the Kathryn Otoshi book, “One,”

about being accepting of other’s differences, then discussed what it means to be an upstander. Each class then came up with an upstander statement, which covered the bulletin board to demonstrate the school’s commitment to fostering a caring and kind community.

Each of the 12 stations had a Halloween theme like jumping over mats at the haunted hill, riding on scooters on the “scareway” or climbing the ropes to free themselves from the spider web. Dear Fellow Residents: Fall is upon us. This year it felt as if the leaves literally changed overnight. Driving around our wonderful Village, it was so nice to see all the different colors of the leaves. For the second year in a row, the Village provided a safe trick or treating experience by closing Park Boulevard for all to enjoy. This year the weather was stupendous and the crowds of kids and adults in costumes was enormous. I want to thank all the merchants for participating this year and making the event a success. Looking at the long-range forecast for the winter, predictions are calling for warmer than normal temperatures with near to below normal snowfall. We cannot rely on long-range predictions; however, I can assure you that our Village DPW will be prepared for whatever mother nature sends our way. Our Village personnel have been preparing Park Boulevard and Merrick Road for the holiday season. We have placed the LED lights in the trees, decorated the Christmas Tree and erected the Menorah. The holiday houses are on the Boulevard and it is always amazing to me to see how our merchants decorate them. Everyone has their own special touch and we thank them for it.

Mail Delivery During & After Snowstorms

The Village is organizing a food drive for the holidays to benefit the food pantry at St. Rose of Lima. Nonperishable items can be dropped off in the lobby at Village Hall.

To help letter carriers deliver mail safely, residents are reminded to maintain a clear path to the mailbox, including steps, porches, walkways and street approach, which will help letter carriers maintain consistent delivery service. Carriers are not required to deliver to locations where these issues create a hazardous condition.

The Village is also participating in the Toys for Tots program sponsored by the U.S. Marine Corps Reserve. Residents are invited to drop off new unwrapped toys in the Toys for Tots Box located in the lobby at Village Hall. Toy donations will be accepted until Tuesday, December 11th.

What to do in a Snowstorm

Village Taxes: REMINDER

In the event of a major snowstorm (three inches or more), all residents are urged to clear the streets of all cars. Cars should be placed in driveways, garages, or any other available space. If you do not have off-street parking for your car, Village Law allows the following: During a snow emergency occurring in even numbered years, parking will be permitted on even numbered sides of the streets. During a snow emergency occurring in odd numbered years, parking will be permitted on odd numbered sides of the street. Please remember that streets are often plowed more than once during a typical snowstorm. Residents are advised that plowing is not completed until 24 hours after the snow has stopped. Driveway aprons should not be shoveled out until the plows have opened the street to maximum width. When shoveling your sidewalk or driveway, do not throw the snow onto the street. This will turn to ice, cause a dangerous situation, and may force additional plowing. Snow should be placed on the utility strip or your front lawn. Snow from driveways should be piled on your lawn. Please consider these points and help us to help you during a storm.

Some Good Advice... SMOKE ALARMS

• Make sure your home has working smoke alarms. • Place a smoke alarm on every level including inside each sleeping room and outside each separate sleeping area. Interconnect the alarms so when one sounds, they all sound. • Install smoke alarms and alert devices to assist family members who are deaf or hard of hearing. • Alert devices, such as strobe lights, flash when the smoke alarm sounds. Pillow or bed shakers may be useful to wake a person who is sleeping. The shakers are triggered by the sound of the smoke alarm and shake people awake to warn them of a fire. • Test your alarms at least once a month. Press each test button to make sure it is working. • Review the Consumer Product Safety Commission, www.cpsc.gov, website for information on recalled smoke alarms.

Garbage Collection Garbage should not be placed out for collection before 5pm the evening before collection day and should be retrieved not later than 8pm on collection day. Containers must be secured with a tight cover. All garbage cans and containers, when not placed out for collection, shall be kept at the side of the house or at the back of the house and not in front of the houseline.

Dog Owners • Always remember to curb your dog. • It is unlawful for any dog to defecate on public or private property other than the property owned or leased by the person having control over the dog. • Dogs are not allowed to run loose on public streets or in public places in the Village. • All dogs must be restrained on a leash. • Dogs should not disturb the quiet of any person or neighborhood. • All dogs must be licensed.

Dumpsters On Private Property Residents are reminded a dumpster on private property will require a permit. An application for a Dumpster Permit can be obtained from Village Hall. The dumpster must meet certain setbacks and is limited in the time it is permitted to stay on the property. The fee is $25.00. Residents are reminded that any operations or use of pneumatic hammers, chain saws, leaf blowers, power washers, or to engage in any other building operation causing loud or unusual noises anywhere in the Village Of Massapequa Park, is allowed only during the hours of 8:00am through 7:30pm, Monday through Fridays, 9:00am through 7:00pm on Saturdays; and no work permitted on Sundays.

Applications containing detailed information regarding rules and regulations governing the picnic areas, as well as the appropriate fees, are now available in Village Hall. Application forms for picnic permits for Brady Park will be accepted on a first come, first serve basis starting January 2, 2019. Applications must be presented in person at Village Hall.

Let’s Get Cozy For Fall!

On October 16, 2018 Senator John Brooks awarded the 2018 New York State Senate Empire Award to Eileen Scanlon, founder of Scanlon’s Traveling Salon. This traveling salon serves not only paying customers, but provides free services for those who are not able to afford a haircut or hair process. Some of the communities that Eileen serves are the home confined and vulnerable, hospice, group homes, sober houses and assisted living communities. Scanlon’s Traveling Salon is extra unique because Eileen always travels to her customers so they can enjoy her services in the comfort of their home or living space. She also incorporates her love of social justice and advocacy into her business practice by using only

vegan products. Senator John E. Brooks is the New York State Senator for the 8th District, representing portions of Nassau and Suffolk Counties along the South Shore of Long Island. The New York State Senate Empire Awards recognize excellence in business in this New York Senate District. One of the requirements each year’s recipient must meet is that their business must have created a culture of philanthropy and the recipient must volunteer their time and services, demonstrate exceptional leadership in the community, conduct virtuous ethical practices, green practices, outstanding service, or have contributed significantly to their community’s quality of life. has surely checked all of those boxes. Noelle Lambert, South Bay’s Neighbor Newspaper’s Promotional Coordinator and writer of Helping You Help Others, as well as Howard Ritzer, one of South Bay’s Neighbor Newspaper’s Account Representatives and a Massapequa Chamber of Commerce Board Member, attended the event on behalf of our newspaper since this Senator’s office first became aware of Scanlon’s Traveling Salon after reading about her organization while they were featured as Charity of the Month in Noelle’s weekly column, Helping You Help Others. The award ceremony was truly heartfelt and uplifting! It’s always a good day when good news makes the news.
