www.autismfyi.org Autism FYI (AFYI) is a 501c3 nonprofit o r g a n i z a t i o n dedicated to promoting a safe e n v i r o n m e n t , e m p l o y m e n t opportunities and independence for those on the Autism Spectrum.
In regards to their IRIS program, IRIS stands for Immediate Recognition Increases Safety. This program is free and anyone can register for at www. afyi-iris.org (parents or guardians can register and enroll their child or dependent as a member and those who are over 18 years can register and enroll themselves). The program is dedicated to the safety of those on the Autism Spectrum and those with Neurological or Brain Disorders. This includes those with Alzheimers, MS, Intellectual Development Disabilities, Down’s Syndrome, Brain Injury, PTSD and others. IRIS provides 24 hour access to members emergency information and contacts through their emergency hotline.

This app contains picture language and emojis, so first responders can communicate easily with the individual. It also contains their 24hour emergency hotline information and the 5 Keys To De-Escalation. Autism FYI was founded by Dr. James Benjamin and his wife Joyce in 2014 to help advance awareness of the needs surrounding people with Autism. They accomplish this goal of theirs through a safety membership program offered by their organization that is called IRIS, as well as through training that creates community awareness about Autism and allows businesses to become “Autism Friendly Certified”, which allows them to create a more inclusive community for those with Autism.

They may be novice music makers, but students at McKenna Elementary School in the Massapequa School District have just as much enthusiasm as those who have been playing for decades. Orchestra teacher Katherine Cahalan has been working with fourth graders who are learning to play an instrument of their choice for the first

time. She begins with the basics, such as showing them how to open the case, teaching them the different parts of the instrument and demonstrating the rest position. Students then pluck the strings with their fingers to hear the different sounds that each one makes. Finally, they advance to using the bow to play some simple notes and melodies. Through her PowerSchool Learning page, Ms. Cahalan also
provides music lessons that students can access at home. She noted that fellow Massapequa orchestra teacher, Alison Pearl, created this resource for young musicians across the district, because independent practice time at home is essential to their continued improvement. Before students can join the band or orchestra in fourth grade, they receive their introduction to instrumental music a year before with the recorder.
Teacher Clarence Kelly is teaching McKenna’s third graders the finger positions to play different notes in general music classes. Students then practice at home. A song called “Ba Ba Ooh La La” helps children master the first two notes on the beginner woodwind instrument. They will learn the rest of the scale as the year goes on in preparation for a recorder concert in the spring.
