Since 1992, this organization has collected over 1 million new toys and have donated them to sick and underpriviledged children in over 180 hospitals and child-care facilities. However, this Foundation does more than just collect and distribute toys. Mock Trial Team Continues To Impress

Massapequa High School’s mock trial team had another successful fall season with a county championship and a pair of individual awards. The team participated in Harvard University’s High School Seminar Program on Nov. 16 and 17, during which they attended workshops hosted by accomplished members of Harvard’s mock trial team. Additionally, Massapequa students took part in a mock trial scrimmage, presenting arguments on a fictitious homicide case. Senior Meaghan Phillips, who played the role of the defendant, won the award for best witness while Samantha Kearns earned the best attorney award. The Massapequa team also received valuable feedback from Harvard’s mock trial members. Shortly after returning,
the team participated in the Long Island Mentor Moot Court competition at the federal courthouse in Central Islip. The team of Aidan Franzke, Alex Lawless, Isabella Mininni and Meaghan Phillips argued a case involving a constitutional rights violation. They advanced to the Nassau County championship round and defeated Holy Trinity High School. The team spent about six weeks preparing for the Moot Court competition, extensively studying prior legal decisions to prepare their arguments. Alex noted that even though the case was fictional, he and his teammates cited real case law. Students say that mock trial helps them improve their public speaking skills, ability to think on their feet and understanding of
using evidence to defend their arguments, and many members of the team are interested in pursuing careers in law. They also noted that being successful in competition requires good teamwork and a strong understanding of each other’s strengths. “You can’t win a case by yourself,” Aidan said. “You need every person to do their part.” The mock trial competitions allow students to further develop their understanding of the legal system from their basic and advanced law classes with teachers Daniel Bachman, John Pardue, Dana Robbins and David Summers. Mr. Bachman and Mr. Pardue coach the team, which is now preparing for a February tournament hosted by the Nassau County Bar Association.
SADD Spreads A Happy Message World Kindness Day is celebrated in November, but students at Unqua Elementary School decided one day wasn’t enough. They devoted the entire month to spreading messages of kindness to foster a continuing culture of caring and compassion. The initiative was spearheaded by the Student Against Destructive Decisions club under the direction of adviser Tonianne Napolitano. They created the “Be the I in Kind” bulletin board in
the hallway with K-N-D. The missing “I” was filled in by students standing in the open space. Students also signed their names around the large letters as a way of pledging their commitment to kindness. Other ways that the SADD club spread kindness was by passing out compliment cards to their peers and gifting Kind snack bars to teachers and staff members. Ms. Napolitano visited classrooms for lessons on giving compliments.
Fifth grade SADD club members Rylie Duenges, Samantha Gjodesen and Jett Stake talked about the importance of being role models as the oldest students in the school and showed through their own actions how to treat others. “You have to spread kindness throughout the world,” Jett said. “If everyone’s nice, then everyone could be happy.” Added Rylie, “I want to be in a school where everyone is nice to each other and cares for each other.”

Oyster Bay Town Supervisor Joseph Saladino announced that the Town is seeking experienced coaches for its successful Youth Ice Hockey and House League Program. “While the Town’s program maintains popularity year-round, the cooler weather brings with it a greater participation in our youth ice hockey
program,” said Supervisor Saladino. “The Town is looking for experienced hockey coaches looking for a fun and rewarding way to spend their time. What better way to hone your hockey skills than helping our youth improve theirs?” The Town of Oyster Bay Youth Ice Hockey Program is underway at the indoor Ice Skating Center, open

New York Dance Theatre will present its 38th season of “The Nutcracker” at Hofstra University’s John Cranford Adams Playhouse, on Saturday, December 14 and Sunday, December 15 with performances each day at noon and 5 p.m. NYDT’s production is the largest Nutcracker on Long Island and the only one performed in the tradition of New York City Ballet’s Lincoln Center version. This year’s production will be the first without New York Dance Theatre founder and former New York City Ballet soloist Frank Ohman, who passed in July 2019 at age 80. Through the years, Frank Ohman created original dances and scenes which have been incorporated into the ballet and set his production apart from others on Long Island. As a former student and soloist under George Balanchine he was one of a select few authorized
to use the original pas de deux choreography of his mentor, which will continue to distinguish this production. Mr. Ohman’s traditional role of the grandfather in the party scene that opens the ballet will be left vacant this season in his honor. Special guest artists Brittany Pollack and Daniel Ulbricht of New York City Ballet return to perform as the Sugarplum Fairy and her Cavalier. Brittany Pollack, a New York City Ballet soloist, made her Broadway debut as “Louise” in the 2018 revival of Carousel. Mr. Ulbricht, a principal dancer at New York City Ballet, has taught students at the Ohman School of Ballet, a division of New York Dance Theatre, as a master class guest teacher and in his role as artistic director of the elite New York State Summer School of the Arts (NYSSA) ballet program in
Saratoga Springs. With the elegant Christmas Party Scene, the drama of the magical growing Christmas Tree, the Battle of the Toy Soldiers and Giant Mice, the live Snow Storm, and the brilliant dancing in the Land of the Sweets, “The Nutcracker” appeals to all ages. In all, a cast of 80 children, pre-professional and professional dancers will bring this classic story ballet to life on the stage of the John Cranford Adams Playhouse. The children’s roles are performed by students of the Frank Ohman School of Ballet in Commack, representing a variety of towns in Nassau and Suffolk Counties. Veterans from all eras and all branches of the United States military shared their personal stories with students during the annual Take a Veteran to School Day program at Berner Middle School in the Massapequa School District on Nov. 8. Eighth graders had an opportunity to visit the library during their social studies classes and sit down for personal talks with veterans. The guests discussed their experiences, shared photos and other memorabilia, and fielded questions from the inquisitive students. Social studies
teacher Noreen Miller, who organized the event, noted that the curriculum is post-Civil War American history, so students study the conflict periods during which the veterans have served. Ms. Miller said that 32 men and women came in to speak with students including a World War II veteran and a current Navy SEAL. The veterans included parents and grandparents of Berner students, family members of teachers and staff, and representatives from the local American Legion and Veterans of Foreign War posts.
As they arrived at the school, veterans were greeted by the sight of dozens of waving American flags on the front lawn, as the Field of Honor is an annual tradition for Veterans Day. Additionally, Berner teachers and staff members provided photos of family members who served in the military, which lined the bookshelves of the library as discussions took place. After speaking with the veterans, students were asked to write them thankyou letters, highlighting information they learned from those who lived history.
Technology Provides A Spark It may be rare for students to get excited about a test, but in Amy Stapleton’s fourth grade class at Fairfield Elementary School in the Massapequa School District, they are excited to be quizzed on their intellect. That’s because they review for tests using Quizlet Live,
an engaging, competitionbased program. Students log on to Quizlet from their Chromebooks, entering a specific six-digit code to direct them to the game, which is full of content-related questions. The program randomly separates the students into
small groups, who then get together to discuss the questions and find the answers as quickly as possible. Ms. Stapleton said that the group that gets all the right answers in the shortest amount of time wins, so children have fun while reinforcing their knowledge.

Oyster Bay Town Supervisor Joseph Saladino and the Town Board today announced that children can send their ‘holiday wish list’ directly to Old St. Nick at the North Pole through a special network of Santa’s Mailboxes which arrived in Town facilities from the North Pole. Mailboxes will accept letters now through Monday, December 16th. The Town of Oyster Bay will forward letters
