level. The seniors were honored at a signing ceremony on Nov. 10, with proud parents and siblings on hand for the momentous occasion. Many of the athletes still have a season to go with the

Chiefs before joining their collegiate teams. Principal Barbara Lowell said it is an exciting time for the students to be able to finish out their Massapequa athletic careers while also having some clarity

Councilwoman Walsh Cautions Residents Not To Fall Victim To Holiday Scams Town of Oyster Bay Councilwoman Vicki Walsh cautions residents to be on alert of potential telephone and internet scams this Holiday Season, particularly those soliciting any personal information or monetary contribution. “Time and time again we hear about scammers trying to obtain sensitive information from unsuspecting residents, especially our senior citizens,” said Councilwoman Walsh. “Whether on the phone or online, scammers often pose as officials from the Internal Revenue

Service, Social Security Administration or other well-known agency in an attempt to intimidate the recipient.” The Councilwoman noted that many times, their return phone numbers can also be falsified to appear as a familiar number. In addition to seniors, others frequently targeted include students and firstgeneration Americans. Current common scams include offers of debt relief, car warranty extensions, and credit repairs. Scammers have also been known to pose as family members allegedly

in trouble and seeking money. “The last thing families need, especially during these uncertain times, is someone trying to scam them out of their hardearned money,” said Councilwoman Walsh. “We alert all residents to be wary of any unsolicited phone calls and websites that appear suspicious, especially those requesting money or personal information, even if they claim to be from a government or bank entity.” You can take these proactive steps to ensure you and your family aren’t

scam victims: If you receive a call from a number you do not recognize, do not answer the phone. If you do, hang up the phone immediately. Don’t press numbers to speak to a live operator or take your number off the list, as this just confirms your phone number. Ask your phone company whether they charge for blocking phone numbers. Don’t trust your caller ID. Scammers use the internet to make calls all over the world. Don’t click on any suspicious links or attachments in emails and on websites. Massapequa High School’s aspiring culinary artists are also philanthropists, as students recently participated in the Bake For Good initiative. Students in the College Art of Baking, Cooking for Today and Food and Nutrition classes completed a service learning project by baking hundreds of dinner rolls, which are being donated to local food pantries. Materials were provided by the King Arthur Baking Company including flour and yeast. Every student also received a culinary

bench scraper and recipe books with ideas for bread, cinnamon rolls and pizza. Following the Bake for Good concept, each group baked two loaves of bread – one to keep and one to donate. Students prepared the dough on Nov. 16, and then shaped it the following day. Culinary Arts teacher Christina Sabbiondo said that the donation loaves were turned into rolls, which will be given to the food pantries at YES Community Counseling Center and St. Rose of Lima Church in Massapequa. With nine culinary

arts classes taught by Ms. Sabbiondo and Courtney Puricelli, approximately 200 students participated in the initiative. They baked enough rolls to fill more than 40 bags. “It’s a win-win,” Ms. Sabbiondo said. “They get to learn about baking bread and also learn about giving back to their community.” Using the loaves of bread to keep, students celebrated their successful charitable endeavor with a French toast party at the end of the week.

Berner Program Builds Character And Community It was a day devoted to personal growth and community building at Berner Middle School in the Massapequa School District, as the Chiefs Challenge club hosted Character Education Day on Nov. 18. Students heard from powerful guest speakers and participated in activities that fostered a positive school climate. Sixth, seventh and eighth graders attended Ryan’s Story, an anti-bullying presentation, with John Halligan. He spoke about his son, Ryan, who endured much bullying in his life and eventually committed suicide at 13. Students listened intently to his emotional story and message of acceptance. Retired Nassau County police officer Sharon Galvin met with seventh and eighth graders about internet safety and cyberbullying. She discussed the pros and cons of social media and told students about the digital footprint they create whenever they post

something online. In an upstander activity, students learned about the role that they can play to combat bullying. They made paper T-shirts with anti-bullying words and phrases along with kindness bumper stickers. There were also lessons related to this year’s “One School, One Book” initiative. All students are reading “Slacker” by Gordon Korman, and activities focuses on the book’s themes of grit, determination, community and teamwork. The last period featured debriefing sessions in which students could share their reflections on the day and all of the important messages that were imparted. “Character Education Day helps make everyone aware of the issues that are out there,” eighth grade Chiefs Challenge member Alyssa Payero said. “If you’re aware of a problem, you can help stop it if you encounter it.” The afternoon before Character Education

Day, students from Chief’s Challenge, the Builders Club and class officers hung notes with inspirational messages on more than 1,500 student lockers as well as classroom and office doors. The goal was to spread positivity and bring smiles to all students and staff. Principal Jason Esposito said that with the emotional toll that the COVID-19 pandemic has taken on students in the past 20 months, Character Education Day was vital. He thanked Chiefs Challenge advisers Caroline Glynn and Juliette Happe, as well as all of their helpers, for their hard work to plan all of the activities. “Days like this, where we nurture the social and emotional well-being of our students, are more important than ever,” Mr. Esposito said. “We know that the positive impacts are going to be life lasting.”

Receiver Pravato Reminds Residents To File For Property Tax Exemptions Oyster Bay Town Receiver of Taxes Jeff Pravato recently announced that residents may apply for New York State property tax exemptions from now through January 3, 2022. Homeowners wishing to receive exemptions on their 2022-2023 School taxes and 2023 General taxes must file with the Nassau County Department of Assessment or New York State prior to the January 3rd deadline. “I want to make sure that every resident who is eligible, whether they’re a senior citizen, veteran, new homeowner, volunteer firefighter/EMT, person with a disability, or person renovating/ improving their home, get the opportunity to take advantage of the available exemptions,” Receiver Pravato stated. “There are many exemptions available to qualified residents and homeowners, so I urge those interested to contact my office for further assistance parsing through the matter.” Exemptions, resulting in property tax savings, are available to qualified residents for the following categories: • School Tax Relief Program (STAR)Residents may receive only one of the following: o STAR Credit- the STAR Program has been changed by New York

State. New recipients, and current recipients whose annual income is between $250,000 and $500,000, will be issued a check directly from New York State instead of receiving a school property tax exemption. The amount of the benefit will be the same. You cannot receive both the credit and the exemption. Register with New York State by telephone at (518) 4572036 or online at www.tax. ny.gov/pit/property/star/ default.htm. o Basic STAR Property Tax Exemptionthis program provides an exemption from school property taxes for owner-occupied, primary residences with an annual household income of less than $250,000. Current Basic Star Exemption recipients will keep their exemption as long as they continue to own their current home. o Enhanced STAR Property Tax Exemption/ Credit- this exemption is available to senior citizen homeowners who are 65 years of age or older during the year in which the exemption takes effect, and whose annual income does not exceed $92,000. Senior citizens whose annual income exceeds $92,000 will still be eligible for the Basic STAR Exemption/Credit. Current Enhanced Star Exemption recipients will

keep their exemption as long as they continue to own their current home. Recipients must enroll in the Income Verification Program. • Senior Citizen exemption provides a tax savings for individuals over the age of 65, whose income is less than $37,400. To participate and receive this tax savings (between 5% and up to 50% reduction on certain county, town and school district property taxes) specific qualification criteria must be met. • V e t e r a n s Exemptions are for those individuals who rendered service to our country. The eligibility to receive this exemption and amount to be exempted depends upon the time, duration and type of service, along with other criteria. • Cold War Veterans Exemption is for veterans who served during the Cold War period. The Law also provides an additional exemption to disabled veterans. • Gold Star Parent Exemption is available for the parent of a child who died in the line of duty while serving in the United States Armed Forces during a period of war, as defined in NYS Real Property Tax Law. • Persons With Disabilities and Limited Incomes Partial Property Tax Exemption is available
