Massapequa High School Football Team Secures Championship Victory

he Massapequa High School Chiefs captured the Long Island championship with a 35-7 victory over William Floyd High School on Friday, November 24th. This marks their second Long Island title earned in the last three seasons and fourth in their program history. They exemplified perseverance by crafting a remarkable season, embracing victory despite a season ending knee injury that took out their senior star quarterback, Paul Dulanto, at their season opener. The Chiefs continued their season against all odds, forcing junior backup quarterback Joey Diesso, to take the reins at an attempt for the championship. With unwavering support from his teammates and coaches, Diesso, would ultimately lead a strong offensive line for Massapequa resulting in their 12-0 season. This triumph will certainly be engraved in history for Massapequa High School. The 30 seniors were instrumental in the team’s success all season long through their leadership on and off the field. The resilience displayed by the entire team throughout the season is evidence of the dedication and skill of these exceptional young athletes. Congratulations to all the players and coaches on an outstanding season!

When I think of 2023, three words come to mind: resilience, gratitude, and perseverance. As the owner of a local business, I’ve witnessed firsthand the incredible strength and versatility of our business community. From them, I learned three lessons that I will take with me into the New Year:

Oyster Bay Town Supervisor Joseph Saladino, Receiver of Taxes Jeffrey Pravato and Assemblyman John Mikulin joined with the Massapequa Chamber of Commerce and local business owners to launch an Operation Safe Spot & Shop Local Campaign initiative. Officials announced a new initiative that further demonstrates the critical role local businesses play in our community – this time through public safety. The Chamber is piloting a new program to designate businesses as “Safe Spots” with training to aid people in emergency situations

and connect them to lifesaving resources. Supervisor Joseph Saladino stated, “The Massapequa Chamber of Commerce created Operation Safe Spot to ensure residents feel safe when out shopping, improve emergency response, and connect those in need with lifesaving resources. Through Operation Safe Spot, local business owners are background-checked and trained to aid people in emergency situations. They’re connected to local resources like our amazing Nassau County Police Department, and they’re available as a safe spot if

residents are feeling unsafe or unwell. Look for the sign on local windows.” Receiver of Taxes Pravato added, “Small businesses are the heartbeat of our local economy and shopping locally not only makes our downtowns stronger, but also keeps your money local and supports local jobs. With the holiday shopping season upon us, we remind residents that local merchants often in turn reinvest in our communities by supporting local charities and youth athletic teams. The program has put out a call for children’s clothing for girls, sizes two to size 8; boys clothing 0 to 6 months and sizes 7-8-9. Shoes are always welcome. This free outreach program, run and supported by the Ethical Humanist Society of Long Island in Garden City since 1985, assists more than 2500 children and their families each year by providing them with clothing, backpacks for

school and infant furniture. The service is set up like a store so people can select what they want from a wide variety of clothes. In addition to clothing, the program distributes donations of pampers, children’s puzzles and small toys, EFC is staffed entirely by volunteers and there is no charge for any services. Individuals, families, or community groups donate gently used clothing and any cash donations go entirely towards purchase of needed items for children, such as diapers and formula. “Customers” are referred by

many of the area’s social service organizations and are supported by both religiously affiliated and private agencies funded by Nassau and Suffolk Counties. Volunteers are always welcome to help sort, organize and deliver clothing and goods. Helping others has been a mission for students in the Massapequa School District for Thanksgiving. Berner Middle School’s student council, under the direction of advisers Denise Robertson and Teresa Ferreira organized a food drive, collecting hundreds of nonperishable goods to help local families. On Nov. 8, the student leaders packed up the donations and traveled to Our Lady of Lourdes Church in Massapequa Park, where

they helped stock the food pantry and learned about the impact the donations will have. The student councils at East Lake and Fairfield elementary schools also spearheaded food drives. At East Lake, nonperishable food and paper goods were collected for the food pantry at St. Rose of Lima Church in Massapequa. Fairfield’s donations went to the Island Harvest food bank. Students from both schools made signs to

Massapequa Students Give Food, Spread Smiles hang around the buildings to promote the food drives. Lockhart Elementary School not only held a food drive, but fifth graders also decorated paper bags with fall or Thanksgiving designs and made cards. The bags were filled with food that was given to local families in time for the holiday. This is the fourth year the school has done the bag decorating and the goal is to spread joy for Thanksgiving.

Christmas trees are among the most recognizable symbols of the holiday season, and the popularity of trees is undeniable. According to the National Christmas Tree Association, approximately 25 to 30 million real Christmas trees are sold in the United States each year. Christmas trees also are big business in Canada, where Statistics Canada notes cash receipts from Canadian Christmas tree producers totaled nearly $163.5 million in 2022. Annual spending on Christmas trees underscores how important they are to holiday decor. Christmas trees serve as the centerpiece in millions of holiday home decor schemes, so it's important to pick a tree that can shine in that role. This holiday season, celebrants can consider these tips as they look for the perfect Christmas tree. · Measure the area where the tree will be placed. A large tree can be aweinspiring but also can stick out like a sore thumb if it takes up too much space. There should be enough room around the tree for families and their guests to sit around it. The home interior experts at Better Homes & Gardens recommend leaving a minimum of six inches between the top of the tree and the ceiling. If a tree

topper will be added, make sure the top of the tree is at least 12 inches from the ceiling. Measure the area before leaving to buy a tree, so it can fit nicely into the room and the surrounding decor. · Try the shake test. Anyone who has purchased a fresh-cut Christmas tree is undoubtedly familiar with the shake test, which remains an effective way to measure the dryness of the tree. However, a lot of falling green needles indicate the tree is already drying out, which means it could shed quite a bit and lose its looks before Christmas Day. · Pick a tree with a symmetrical look. Trees are living things, so it's unlikely that buyers will find a perfectly symmetrical tree. However, a tree that's misshapen or already has some sagging branches won't make for an awe-inspiring addition to a home decor scheme. · Find the trunk (if you can). A trunk that's visible through the branches indicates the tree does not have dense branches, which will be necessary if homeowners want to dress the tree with ornaments. If it's hard to find the

trunk because of all the thick branches and green needles, then the tree is likely pretty healthy. · Test the needles. The home improvement experts at Lowes note that needles should be flexible but still snap when bent sharply. Avoid trees with

Chants of “U-S-A, U-S-A” broke out in the hallways of Lockhart Elementary School in the Massapequa School District on Nov. 9 as local veterans walked the first floor, the culmination of the annual Veterans Day ceremony. Students wearing red, white and blue cheered their nation’s heroes to show gratitude for their service and sacrifice.

Before the patriotic march through the hall, veterans were recognized at an assembly in the allpurpose room. The crowd included students in grades 3-5, district administrators, local elected officials and Lockhart parents. Veterans from Massapequa VFW Post 7763 and AmVets Post 88 were the honored guests. They represented multiple

branches of the military as well as different eras of service. The chorus, under the director of Kathleen Dyckman, opened the program by singing the national anthem, and closed it out with “America, Of Thee I Sing” and “God Bless America.” Student council members spoke about the history and meaning of

Veterans Day. “Veterans Day is a special holiday that honors those who served, our POWs and those who are currently serving,” Principal Michael DeLuca said, adding that their “service and sacrifice represents the best of America.” VFW Post Commander William Colfer said Massapequa was a

community built by veterans following World War II. When he had to leave home to serve in Vietnam, seeing the American flag provided a source of comfort for him. “Our flag, more than anything else, symbolizes what our country is all about – freedom,” he told students. “It’s our flag, all of us.”

Lockhart Honors Massapequa Veterans In Patriotic Ceremony Assistant Principal Louisa Vecchione read a poem, “I am a Veteran.” An officer from the Nassau County Police Department played taps. A video roll call featured the names, photos, ranks and military branches of family members of Lockhart students and staff who have served or are currently serving.
