Breast Cancer Hotline Volunteers Needed
The Adelphi NY Statewide Breast Cancer Hotline & Support Program seeks breast cancer survivors of all ages, race and ethnicity-men as well as women-to become volunteers. Thus, the program seeks a diverse group of volunteers to reflect the diversity of the people who are calling the hotline. The three-day training program will take place
on consecutive Tuesdays— January 14, 21 and 28, from 10am to 1 pm at Adelphi University in Garden City. This in-depth training includes presentations by nurse navigators and social workers on basic breast cancer education, active listening skills, and tips on engaging the community. “It is so important for people who call our hotline to speak with someone

John Theissen Children’s Foundation began after their Executive Director & Founder, John Theissen, had stayed at Schneider’s Children’s Hospital in New Hyde Park when he was 17 years old. John needed to have brain surgery for a brain tumor that he unfortunately developed. The day he walked into the hospital he met a 7 year old girl named Tasha. She spent many hours with John for the next few days, always trying to make him happy. Tasha received very little family support, however she expected her family to attend a holiday party that was sponsored by the hospital staff. Unfortunately they did not attend. John was too ill to take her, so his family did. When Santa asked her what she had wanted she replied, “I would like a teddy bear for my friend upstairs.” John felt fortunate to be that friend. Tasha’s positive attitude and generous spirit inspired John. Once he got out of the hospital he wanted to help children just like her. In 1992, John held a toy drive during the holiday season to benefit children in local hospitals. During this first drive, he collected over 800 new toys in just 2 weeks! That was

Since 1992, this organization has collected over 1 million new toys and have donated them to sick and underpriviledged children in over 180 hospitals and child-care facilities. However, this Foundation does more than just collect and distribute toys. They also provide hospitals and childcare facilities with therapeutic and recreational equipment, support families with financial assistance to defray medical expenses, fulfill patient’s wishlists throughout the year (for those 18 years of age and younger) and they assist sick and underpriviledged children in other ways that are needed. On December 5th at 6:30PM, John Theissen Children’s Foundation will be hosting A Night of Champions Holiday Gala! This Gala will feature one of New York’s biggest and best live auctions, great raffles, door prizes, gourmet dishes provided by 2nd Street Gourmet, desserts provided by Francesco’s Bakery and a VIP Lounge Meet & Greet with celebrity professional athletes. LOCAL ORGANIZATION HELPS CHILDREN IN NEED - Help Mrs. Claus is a 501(c)(3) non profit organization, which answers Christmas wishes that are gathered from children in need. These children are living in NYC through the Harlem Dowling agency, a charity helping children succeed since the 1880’s. The Christmas wishes are first written out in the children’s Letters to Santa. Then Help Mrs. Claus steps in and helps to fulfill these wishes. Since inception 9 years ago, Help Mrs. Claus has granted over 2,000 wishes, but they will not stop there! They are currently in the process of gathering gift donations for the upcoming Holiday Season. With plenty of children in need, they are still looking for volunteers and donations. Children were able to experience history by listening to those who lived it at the annual Veterans Day program at McKenna Elementary School in the Massapequa School District on Nov. 7. Veterans visited classrooms to tell their stories and answer students’ questions about their service and life after the military. Assistant Principal Mary Anne Ferraro said that 47 veterans attended the program, all related to McKenna students. Each classroom, kindergarten through fifth grade, had at least one visitor. The guests ranged from veterans who fought in World War II to those currently serving, and represented
all branches of the armed forces. Richard Grodski, who was in the Navy during the Korean War, enjoyed the interaction with the students. He said his hope was that they gained an appreciation for the sacrifices that veterans have made. “The program was tremendous and the kids had great questions,” he said. “The whole thing was very, very well done.” After speaking in classrooms, veterans visited the Hall of Heroes. The hallway leading from the auditorium to the gymnasium was transformed with patriotic artwork made by students from kindergarten
through fifth grade. It also included photo slideshow and a display of memorabilia loaned to the school by the veterans, including helmets, jackets, photographs and medals. Children showed their appreciation in many other ways such as in Lisa Mullin’s fourth grade class where they shook the hands of the five veterans who visited and made thank-you cards and posters. Students and staff also wore red, white and blue to school. “The event was a success,” Ms. Ferraro said. “Our goal was to connect veterans and students and to learn through discussion.”

Students See Impact Of Holiday Food Drive

The generosity of students from Berner Middle School in the Massapequa School District will be felt throughout the community during the holiday season. Donations from a recent food drive were delivered to the St. Rose of Lima Church food pantry to benefit families in Massapequa. On Nov. 27, an SUV was filled with all of the food collected in the preceding weeks and brought to the food pantry. That afternoon, 21 students arrived to sort the donations, which included canned vegetables, cereal,

Members of the student council as well as the sixth, seventh and eighth grade class officers met with Marianne Meyer from the St. Rose of Lima parish outreach center, who told them about the food pantry, who it serves, why people may be in need and the importance of keeping a stock of many different types of food to ensure that everyone’s nutritional needs are met. She also said the pantry isn’t limited to just food, as it also keeps
a supply of toiletries and hygiene items. Student Council advisers Kristen Meoli and Denise Robertson said that having the students go to the food pantry to sort items and learn about its mission gives them greater perspective on the importance of charity. “It’s nice to know that you’re helping out a lot of people,” said eighth grader Josh Holden, the student council president. “To help out people who are less fortunate, it gives you a good feeling. It’s nice to be a part of it beyond just donating food.”
