Thyroid Cancer Support Group ThyCa Long Island, a support group for thyroid cancer survivors will be holding a free virtual meeting on the Zoom platform on Sunday, December 13 from 1:00 PM - 3:00 PM. ThyCa Long Island, a support group for thyroid cancer survivors, is affiliated with ThyCa: Thyroid Cancer Survivors’ Association, Inc.; a non-profit 501(c)(3) organization of thyroid cancer survivors, family members, and health care professionals. We are dedicated to support, education, and communication for thyroid cancer survivors, their families and friends. We also sponsor Thyroid Cancer Awareness Month, year-round awareness activities, and thyroid cancer research fundraising and research grants. At meetings people share thyroid cancer information, their experiences, and insights on how they are coping with thyroid cancer. The support group is free and open to any and all survivors and their families and friends.

500 for 500 Patriotic Scholarship Program Dr. Cynthia Paulis proud veteran announces the annual 500 for 500 patriotic scholarship program for all seniors at Massapequa High School. The theme this year is Why Veterans are important to this country. In 500 words or less students will write an essay and submit it to Mr. Paul Weber in the guidance office.

Councilman Tom Hand recently announced that registration for the Town’s 2020-21 Winter Youth Ice Hockey Program and House League has begun at the Town of Oyster Bay Ice Skating Center, located at 1001 Stewart Avenue in Bethpage. “The Town of Oyster Bay’s Youth Ice Hockey Program is one of the best games in town, and features many respected coaches dedicated to teaching this outstanding sport to the many boys and girls enrolled in the program,” said Councilman Hand. “As a hockey enthusiast myself, I am proud to announce that the children who attend the program get the unique opportunity to hone their skating and hockey skills as part of a program that has earned recognition

by the National Hockey League for its high level of quality.” Boys and girls, ages 6 – 16, interested in registering for the Winter Youth Ice Hockey Program must bring a copy of their birth certificate, proof of Town of Oyster Bay residency (tax or utility bill) as well as payment. Walsh Seeks Volunteers to Help Senior Citizens Register for Smart911

Oyster Bay Town Councilwoman Vicki Walsh recently announced a new volunteer program that helps protect the lives of senior citizens. The Town of Oyster Bay is calling on students to volunteer in helping senior citizens register for Smart911, a free public safety service offered by the Nassau County Police Department that allows residents to provide 911 emergency call takers and emergency responders with one’s health condition, prescription medicines and other important medical information. Councilwoman Walsh stated “With many senior citizens not utilizing a computer, this volunteer initiative allows students help their aging neighbors register lifesaving information with the Nassau County Police Department and ensure the highest level of emergency response during a critical time. The

information we submit to Smart911 enables first responders to make better decisions more quickly when taking your call and arriving at your home during an emergency.” Smart911 allows all residents to create a free safety profile for their household at www.smart911.com that includes information necessary for 911 call takers to have in the event of an emergency. Details can include names and photos of all family members, medical conditions, allergies, pets, and emergency contacts. The Safety Profile created by residents will immediately display to 911 call takers when receiving an emergency call, and also provides a way for residents to include information that will enhance disaster response such as power needs for medical equipment, evacuation assistance and sheltering needs. In the event of a natural disaster, public

safety officials will be able to quickly determine which residents need assistance. “Smart911 streamlines the time necessary to collect critical information and allows faster assignment and dispatch of responders to call locations with more information to assist the residents quickly,” added Councilwoman Walsh. Smart911 also provides the capability to conduct Mass Emergency Alerting callouts, allowing residents to optin to receive emergency alerts from public safety officials based on geographic locations of events. These mass notifications can be sent through various means of communications including phone, text or e-mail.
