Food Drive Fulfills Kindness Club’s Mission The Kindness Club at Birch Lane Elementary School in the Massapequa School District has a wide reach in its desire to spread goodwill. For Thanksgiving, the club hosted a food drive to benefit families throughout Long Island. Large bins were placed in the lobby during the week of Nov. 16-20, and each grade was assigned different items to bring in

to ensure that everyone would receive all the necessary components of a Thanksgiving meal. After school, Kindness Club members filled large paper bags with canned fruits and vegetables, cranberry sauce, gravy, mashed potatoes, pie filling, stuffing and more. Before the bags were filled, they were decorated

with pictures and Thanksgiving messages by students in Kim Kelly’s, Lauren Marocchi’s and Victoria Nemes’ classes. Heather Comparetto, Birch Lane’s occupational therapist, then delivered all of the food packages to Long Island Cares, which runs the Harry Chapin Food Bank.

I encourage all of our residents who are able to donate to this amazing cause, as the Toys for Tots Drive helps ensure that disadvantaged children within our community do not have to go the holiday season without something to bring them happiness.” The ‘Cruise Thru Holiday Toy Drive’ will provide residents an excellent way to contribute directly to the cause and help bring a smile to a child’s face this holiday season. Additionally, the event will feature an appearance by

Santa Claus, and a drop box where kids can drop their letters to Santa off at. www.autismfyi.org Autism FYI (AFYI) is a 501c3 nonprofit organization dedicated to promoting a safe environment, employment opportunities and independence for those on the Autism Spectrum. They recently opened their first office in the New York area in Wantagh. They are honored and delighted to have this new office and team to serve the New York Autism community for years to come! Autism FYI was founded by Dr. James Benjamin and his wife Joyce in 2014 to help advance awareness of the needs surrounding people with Autism. They accomplish this goal of theirs through a safety membership program offered by their organization that is called IRIS, as well as through training that creates community awareness about Autism and allows businesses to become “Autism Friendly Certified”, which allows them to create a more inclusive community for those with Autism. Their organization envisions a nation that utilizes its resources to assure that all of those living on the Autism Spectrum have a promising and equitable future; they are both locally and globally committed.

The objective is to help and give support to needy families with children by hearing appeals from various organizations. An upcoming event is a food drive scheduled for both January, and February, 2022. The food/monetary donations are distributed to various church “Outreach” centers that are in need of replenishing pantry items. The Chair is

Supporting Small Businesses Supporting small businesses ensures more money stays in the communities those businesses serve. The U.S. Small Business Administration says $48 out of every $100 spent at

a small business stays in the community. On the ﬂip side, when a person spends $100 at a big-box store or a national chain, only $14 remains in the community. Local businesses are more likely to utilize other local

businesses, such as banks, service providers and even farms. Small businesses also pay employees, many of whom are local and shop local, thereby keeping even more dollars in their communities.

PUZZLE ANSWERS:

Massapequa High School senior Sarah Popeck, with her exemplary performance on the Advanced Placement Research exam, earned a distinction shared by only a few hundred other students across the globe. Sarah not only received the top score of 5, but she was also one of only 375 students in the world to earn every possible point. AP Research is the second course in the College Board’s AP Capstone program. She

took the introductory class, AP Seminar, as a sophomore with teachers Nicole Junjulas and David Summers before moving on to the more advanced research class as a junior with Valerie Domenech. In AP Research, students select topics of personal interest and work on the project for the duration of the school year. Their goal is to identify knowledge gaps and contribute new information on a subject. Sarah’s topic was the

impact of social studies teachers on the advocacy and civic engagement of high school students. She conducted a survey of students from multiple high schools and then analyzed her data. Sarah said she learned that when teachers foster intellectual discussions and make strong connections between historical events and the present day, students are more likely to be active citizens. She is very active herself, serving

as the Northeast regional technologist for a nonprofit organization aimed at gun violence prevention, and said her involvement is the result of having very engaging social studies teachers. “I loved discovering something that wasn’t known yet,” she said. “Research is so important because we can close that gap of knowledge. All the work that I was putting in over the year has paid off.” While projects are done

independently, students do have guidance along the way. Teacher Dana Robbins served as her expert adviser and Christopher Diehl provided mentorship for statistical analysis. Sarah earned every possible point on both her paper, which was scored by the College Board, and her oral defense, which was presented in front of a panel of Massapequa educators. Social Studies Curriculum Associate Dr. Brian Trapani, who oversees the

Massapequa Student Researcher Scores Perfect AP Capstone program, said that the oral defense is extremely challenging because students not only have to prepare a strong presentation but they also have to answer follow-up questions from the panel. Beyond high school, Sarah hopes to continue to be involved in research and a said the AP Capstone program has prepared her well for the future. At Massapequa High School,

Oyster Bay Town Councilman Steve Labriola invites residents to take part in Winter Athletic Programs for basketball, badminton, volleyball, pilates, yoga, and fitness classes beginning on January 2nd, 2022 at the Town of Oyster Bay Hicksville Athletic Center. All athletic programs are coed and open to individuals 18 and over. “The Town’s renowned athletic programs at the Hicksville Athletic Center offer a great opportunity for residents to take to the courts, improve their skills and make new friends,” said Councilman Labriola. “These recreational activities are a great way to have fun and stay active, and are an affordable way to stay in shape while having a good time.” Basketball will be held on Thursdays from 9:00 PM to 10:30 PM, Saturdays from 8:15 AM to 10:00 AM, and Sundays from 8:15 AM to 10:00 AM, beginning on January 2nd, 2022. The Basketball program is 10-weeks long and costs $25 for residents and $40 for non-residents. Registration is at the Hicksville Athletic Center (167 Broadway, Hicksville) on December 7th, December 8th, and December 9th between the

hours of 5:30 PM - 9:30 PM. Badminton will feature two sessions available for registrants to choose from.
