Long Island Cares is one of the region’s most comprehensive hunger assistance organizations, which serves thousands of individuals and families in need. They provide food when and where it is needed, sponsor programs that promote self- sufficiency and they educate the public about the causes and consequences of hunger on Long Island.
So who faces hunger on Long Island? More often than not, it is people who are just like you. Fewer than 5% of the individuals served by Long Island Cares and other organizations fighting poverty and hunger in our community are actually homeless. According to the national study, Hunger in America, here are some staggering statistics that will allow you to better understand the need for organizations like Long Island Cares on our island. There are approximately 283,700 people on Long Island that receive emergency food every single year. That equates to 64,900 people every week. 39% of Long Islanders who receive emergency food are children under the age of 18. While children are among the largest single population of hungry, they have virtually no voice; their needs are easily dismissed and overlooked and they must rely on others to access the feeding programs and services they need. Additionally, children who are hungry are more likely than their peers to experience behavioral issues, reduced ability to learn social skills and impaired cognitive learning, even
permanent brain damage. Lastly, I think it is important to mention that Food Banks are by far the single most important source of food for agencies with emergency food providers, accounting for 69% of the food distributed by pantries, 39% distributed by kitchens and 45% by shelters. So how can you get involved with this organization to help those in need? There are many ways! You can volunteer with the organization, even if it is just for a few hours, to help make a difference in the lives of others. Volunteers can participate in the following areas: Warehouse Sorting & Repacking (lifting is required), Clerical Tasks, Mobile Pantry, Food Pantries, Special Events, Food Drives or their Student Volunteer Corps. Food donations to Long Island Cares is one of the simplest ways you can make a difference in the lives of your neighbors. You can drop off your food donation at one of their ongoing or upcoming food drives or a Long Island Cares food pantry on weekdays from 8:30AM-4:00PM. The Adelphi NY Statewide Breast Cancer Hotline & Support Program seeks breast cancer survivors of all ages, race and ethnicity-men as well as women-to become volunteers. Thus, the program seeks a diverse group of volunteers to reflect the diversity of the people who are calling the hotline. The three-day training program will take place
on consecutive Tuesdays— January 14, 21 and 28, from 10am to 1 pm at Adelphi University in Garden City. This in-depth training includes presentations by nurse navigators and social workers on basic breast cancer education, active listening skills, and tips on engaging the community. “It is so important for people who call our hotline to speak with someone

Mailboxes will accept letters now through Monday, December 16th. The Town of Oyster Bay will forward letters

LOCAL ORGANIZATION HELPS CHILDREN IN NEED - Help Mrs. Claus is a 501(c)(3) non profit organization, which answers Christmas wishes that are gathered from children in need. These children are living in NYC through the Harlem Dowling agency, a charity helping children succeed since the 1880’s. The Christmas wishes are first written out in the children’s Letters to Santa. Then Help Mrs. Claus steps in and helps to fulfill these wishes. Since inception 9 years ago, Help Mrs. Claus has granted over 2,000 wishes, but they will not stop there! They are currently in the process of gathering gift donations for the upcoming Holiday Season. With plenty of children in need, they are still looking for volunteers and donations. Helping a complete stranger in need. That is exactly what 28 year old David Pevsner of Massapequa Park has done. Five Years ago, in his Senior year at Geneseo, David attended a Relay for Life Event, which is a community based fundraising event for the American Cancer Society and many other cancer related associations. During this event David was approached by a donor Recruitment Coordinator for DKMS, an international non-profit organization and one of the largest bone marrow donor centers in the world. Minutes later, David found himself filling out a donor registry form which consisted of general health and heritage questions along with his contact information and a quick swab to the inside of the cheek. David knew very little about the donation process and at that time was told that he may never be a match, or could possibly be the only one out of 30 million potential donors on the registry to save an individual’s life. Little did he know that years later he
used in 75% of cases. PBSC is a nonsurgical procedure that collects blood stem cells via the bloodstream, which is drawn through one arm then passed through a machine that filters out the blood stem cells. The remaining blood is then returned through the other arm. It is a common misconception that donating bone marrow or blood stem cells is dangerous or painful. There are rarely any side effects. In the days leading up to donation day David prepared by receiving injections of a drug called filgrastim for 5 consecutive days. Filgrastim is a bone marrow stimulant, which increases the number of blood forming cells in the bloodstream. During these days he had mentioned having mild achiness and headaches, but these symptoms did not prevent him from his daily activities. By the 5th day David was now ready to get rid of those blood stem cells that his bone marrow had worked so hard to produce. The day of the donation David had checked himself into the hospital. He was told that the entire process would take 6-8 hours. He watched movies, ate some corned beef and eggs, took a few naps and was treated like the hero he is by all the hospital staff and donation coordinator. His recovery time was less than a week and aside from feeling slightly tired, David described his donation experience as surprisingly simple, easy and pain-free. I asked David how he felt knowing that he has saved another’s life, he paused for a moment, then said, “It didn’t take much from me at all, but gave everything to someone in need. It’s a Powerful way to give!” Each year nearly 18,000 people in the U.S. ages 0-74 are in need of life saving bone marrow.
